Re: Revisiting the Jay-Z vs. Nas saga
Hell yeah I remember that. I remember I wasn't that high on Beanie until that track. Memphis Bleek had a pretty tight track against Game too, but I don't remember too much hype.
Lol@Cisco being the butt (no pun intended) of their homo jokes.PS: You guys are great.

Re: Revisiting the Jay-Z vs. Nas saga
The funny thing is some are saying Nas wasn't speaking in truth but lines like this spoke truer than anything to me. I'm a Jay Z fan but it took me a looooong time to get onboard. It just seemed like he was trying to hard to break through. I respect his grind now but he was using Biggie lines left and right, with a couple of Snoop lines thrown in there. He always said it was out of respect but to me it was lack of imagination and creativity... come up with your own ish.
And props to him for baggin Beyonce but I've talked to many women and he definitely didn't get her b/c of his looks.
Personally, I give the nod to Nas b/c Jay instigated the whole thing. He was doing what 50's doing now and just trying to pick a fight to get his own name bigger. I hate that crap, especially anything that's happened after Biggie/Pac. Anyway, Jay came hard basically blindsiding Nas. It wasn't like back in the day with LL jabbing and Kool Moe D. Nas smacked back... hard! He gets mad props for that. Jay basically came out and said "I was just playin, he didn't have to go there" which is a bitch move in my book if you started the whole thing.
Overall Jay is 100 times more successful than Nas and everything he said was true and all that good stuff. His tracks were hot too, no doubt. But Nas was sittin at home playin video games and just decided to come out and shut Jay up so that makes him the winner of that battle for me.
Hova wins the war though. I don't think he's cuttin Nas' checks (he's not on top at Def Jam anymore right?) but just the fact that he's been to the top of that mountain and many others.Comment

Will, We usually agree but I gotta disagree with you on that. Nas was coming off his worse selling album (Nastradamus) when Takeover came out. Jay was arguably the biggest name in hip hop at the time coming off Hard Knock Life. So to say Jay was trying to pick on a bigger name just isnt true. Also Jay and Nas were both shooting subliminal lines at each other for years before Takeover came out. Jay didnt blindside him...he just came hard at him and for people who werent following the beef it seemed to come out the blue. Nas came harder (in other people's opinions) than Jay with Ether.
Also I dont remember Jay saying he was just playing. If anything he kept going at Nas longer. Nas thought he said all he needed to with Ether so it stopped there for him. Jay dissed him again with Superugly and on Blueprint 2.
As for the "stealing lines" ish that has always been overblown. There isnt a rapper on the planet who doesnt use other rappers lines. Jay is no different.Comment

Re: Revisiting the Jay-Z vs. Nas saga
I always thought Ether was vastly overrated. He did bring it hard and had some nice lines but he also had some wack lines in it too. For example, calling him Gay-Z and his Roc, Coc-a-fella is kinda corny and wack. Takeover attacked his career and called him out on not experiencing what he rapped about, the disses had more to do with Nas than Ether's disses actually had to do with who Jay was.MLB: New York Yankees
NBA: New Jersey Nets
NFL: Detroit Lions / New York Giants
NCAA: UNC

Re: Revisiting the Jay-Z vs. Nas saga
You read part of what I was saying wrong. Nas was definitely NOT the bigger name. As you said, Nas was on the downside of his career while Jay was on the way up. But that was my problem. Nas was chillin' and even though there was a known beef between the two, I don't remember Nas taking anything to any of his tracks. Jay was out to pick a fight. He was doing exactly what 50's doing now. Granted, he was doing a better job of it but he tried to blow up the beef with Nas into more than what it was to sell records. I thought it was a horrible time in the hip hop world for a stunt like that so that kind of turned me off but I also felt like Nas did come back hard when Jay tried to blindside him. Will, We usually agree but I gotta disagree with you on that. So basically I feel like Jay was trying to produce album sales with this beef but it wasn't playful like 50 vs Kanye... he hit Nas with real stuff. Nas came back with a real response, nothing about selling records. Jay came back quick but then was on the radio basically apologizing. I remember that. In short, Nas pretty much shut him up. He's continued to go after people since then but that one died pretty quick after that. I just don't like that Jay even went at him. Nothing against what Jay's done musically and otherwise. It was actually the opposite of how you read it... I feel like it was an NBA player calling out a HS basketball player and trying to dunk all over him, but Nas did his thing.
As for stealing lines, go back and listen to all of Jay's albums (may take you a couple of days, lol). He's straight up stolen A LOT of lines from Biggie. It's not like all other rappers. His earlier stuff, every other rhyme was biggie with a few taken from others sprinkled in.Comment

Re: Revisiting the Jay-Z vs. Nas saga
in the end jay z won, but im one of those people who think nas out dissed him. ether was a killer for me, but if you add on the fact that nas is signed to jay z and is now a publicity stunt has-been loser, you can say jay won that battle.Originally posted by bkrich83Just do what I do and put him on ignore. Some people just can't accept the fact, people have a differing opinion than theirs.Originally posted by bkrich83It's become my favorite feature. Although I do miss reading vickhalloffame's posts for his "insight" on the way the world works.Comment

i think jay won the battle , blueprint 2 was my fav. of the diss songs . I liked ether but thought it was rather immature and shallow . either way it was still a cool battle .And with the third pick - I made the earth sick

agreed.
Cause you don't understand him, it don't mean that he nice
It just means you don't understand all the bullish that he write

Is it "Black Girl Lost" or shorty owe you for ice?And with the third pick - I made the earth sick

Re: Revisiting the Jay-Z vs. Nas saga
Not true. Nastradamus went platinum...and if I'm not mistaken double platinum. Illmatic went plat just a few years ago. And to add to that, there was always a sentiment that Nas was the better MC. No matter how disorganized and terribly produced his records were, he always had the lyrics. Jay-Z was very popular(although I would say DMX was more popular in that span), but he was definately "dumbing it down".Will, We usually agree but I gotta disagree with you on that. Nas was still the underdog though and I think that adds to the public opinion that he won.-Rocky Balboa"Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."Comment

Re: Revisiting the Jay-Z vs. Nas saga
Nastradamus went plat not double plat and it was still considered a brick because it was critically panned, hated by most fans and going plat in 1999 wasnt a huge accomplishment (not a bad one either but it doesnt mean what it meant in the 80's or going plat now). Not true. Re: Revisiting the Jay-Z vs. Nas saga
Whoa now, yeah going plat is rare nowadays but platinum is platinum....nobody says "he only went platinum" lol people can buy a mansion off platinum....even a platinum single (see Bubba Sparxx "Ugly")
But yeah, it was panned by critics....but it was definitely a "successful album" from Nas......Its funny how people get so caught up in saying things b\c its the thing to say (not directed toward anyone here) "Nas doesnt sell", "Nas fell off", "Nas is broke".....lol dude is straight...hes one of the best\ most sucessful artists ever.Comment
