    Does PETA have a case?

Upon first hearing of PETA calling for the suspension of Eight Belles (the horse that died in the Derby) jockey Gabriel Saez, I thought it was ridiculous. I still do, but there argument poised new questions about the sport. This from PETA spokeswoman Kathy Guillermo:
"What we really want to know, did he feel anything along the way? If he didn't then we can probably blame the fact that they're allowed to whip the horses mercilessly."
I've often wonder about the pain tasted by the horses from the whip, especially if it means they are running when they shouldn't be.

Let me preface this by saying i am an animal lover (not in the sick, twisted way). Ive got a soft spot for animals, and when i was looking for a dog, i hated going to the pound, bc they all looked so sad and helpless.

I dont like that the horses are whipped, but i dont think PETA has a case as far as the jockey driving her too hard and breaking her legs. That was a freak thing. The truth is, these horses get treated pretty dang good.

I feel awful that that horse got hurt, but we dont see a civil rights movement anytime a ball player gets hurt, do we? Granted thats a bit extreme, but the broken legs, thats a freak thing, the whipping, im not touching that one.

I'm with you on this one...I'm a big animal lover but PETA is extremist and overboard IMO. These horses are treated like gods, because if you don't treat them well then they'll race like crap and not win you any money. This is just a random happening and PETA's hopping all over it.

Which is very surprising, considering they're always so reasonable and rational.

im sorry but F*** Peta, They've gotten riduclous with their cases. It was a freak accident and these jockeys love their horses for them to see that it may be injuried and keep going sounds pretty riduclous to me.

I don't know enough about horses to know if the Jockey's actions warrant a lawsuit. But just thinking about this logically, if he overworked a horse that was made out to be the next Secretariat and caused it do die, I'd at least hope his future employment prospects aren't too good.

Re: Does PETA have a case?

Its a legitimate question. I can't imahine the whip would hurt more than 2 broken ankles, but if so, then their is legitimate concern.

But then we have to look at human sport too. When the football player gets the shot to numb his ankle or arm should he be continuing. Is he doing this under his own free will or is there some type of durress occuring making him do this out of obligation of some sort instead of free will.

I think this is an extreme reach by PETA, but I also feel that humans are the stewards of this planet and with that comes responsibility and with that means that animals should not be subjected to cruelty for our amusement.

But how do you prove it one way or another? It's not like they can go up to the horse and ask, "Did he hurt you with the whip prior to this?" Just seems to me they needed to get into the news, and this was the way to do it.

I don't remember them bringing this up in 2006 when Barbaro was hurt, and then put down early last year. Seems to me it's more or less the same situation, except one horse died on track, and the other died months later.
