According to attendance numbers the NBA is holding steady with their fanbase over the last 4 years. However, its becoming more polerized. More full arenas, but at the same time there are more arenas with terrible attendance numbers.

    Teams with 100+% attendance
    2004-2005 = 4
    2005-2006 = 5
    2006-2007 = 5
    2007-2008 = 8

Teams with less than 80% attendance
    '04/05 = 3
    '05/06 = 3
    '06/07 = 4
    '07/08 = 7

On the other hand hockey is growing much more popular each year and is actually the fastest growing of the big 4. The NHL didn't have a single team with under 80% attendance and had 11 teams with 100+% attendance on the year.

I guess the question to you would be do you think a team of the best players in the NBA in 2004 could beat the Dream Team (hypothetical of course, so there'd be some duplicates and I'd go by their talent at that time in their career)? I personally don't think they'd have a shot.
Make no mistake, the 92 team (or 88) would be better than a 2004 or 2008 team. I think an 88 team would be without a doubt the best, but I think a 2004 team could at least scrap a bit with the 92 team. They'd lose, but I think they could take a 7 game series to 5-6 games. I'll even go out and say that the 2004 team would have a legitimate advantage down low with Duncan and KG in their primes and Shaq out of his by 2-3 years. The problem is everyone else. I don't think TMac,AI, or Kobe would be all that good in that kind of situation, and the only true PG at the time was Kidd. The 92 team's depth would absolutely murder the 04 teams depth, because backing up the starters would be something like Starbury, Allen, and Pierce. Certainly solid players but not touching the 92 team's depth.

My point was that saying "do you think Prince would have made the 92 team" is misleading because whatever the first team put out was going to be the best. Prince wouldn't even be considered for a 2008 Dream Team, and in the same line of thought, the 92 and 96 teams would have looked a lot different if the first Dream Team was in 1988.

Re: In terms of Sports which is the most popular in the US

I just read something about this on Neilson's site. I remember in the 80's/early 90's baseball got passed up by the NBA. And everyone was saying because kids didn't like how slow it was, etc. The NBA was more attractive to "today's youth".

Now MLB has passed the NBA again.

But the NFL is the standard. Nothing comes close. And they only have 10 home games not including playoffs to sell tickets. But TV and branding they kill.

All the revenues for the major sports leagues in North America. This is a 2008 study.
Well, damn, according to that link we are all wrong.

Golf brings in around 20 billion per year, while horse racing brings in 15 billion.
Overall satisfaction also makes the decline!!!!!!!!!!!!

                Not really.

I'm assuming that since they're just "horse racing" and "golf courses" that horse racing includes the gambling and golf includes non-PGA golfing. For example, I think the title of "golf courses" would include the PGA, Augusta National membership, and others of that ilk, but probably at least 80% of that figure is your local $15 par 3 or any local golf course.

Right. But if we are talking about popularity, we are talking about how much money goes into a sport, be it personal or professional.

Football is the best spectator sport because it has enough intermittent spurts of violence and action to keep you interested for 3 and 1/2 hours, yet it has enough downtime to allow you to drink excessively and grope girls.

That's only the case for Euro games, Champions League games, and World Cup games (if the the host nation is from Europe).

Otherwise, they're a lot earlier (Premier League games on FSC).
