    Re: Plasma vs LCD

Plasmas have a break in period. You can play games on them but its better to be more cautious because you'll see exactly what I did when i hooked my 360 to it.

You definitely have to keep the brightness and contrast down, but and LCD isn't a bad thing to watch movies on,. I watch my blu rays on mine and can't believe how good some of them look. Either way you can't go wrong, but samsungs panasonic's vizio's olevia's sony's phillips LG... just stay away from cheap trash tv's that don't at least use parts from the said named tv's...

What you might want to do is narrow your search down to about 3 tv's and do all the research you can. Go 1080p if you can, and make sure you get one that accepts HDMI to stay upgraded.

Im sure all of the guys here wont mind helping you out.

        Jmood,

I have a thread going on right by yours here where I ask what tv I should buy. I am stuck between a Toshiba lcd or a Panasonic plasma. Check that thread out for more information.

Just when I feel I have it all figured out, I figure out I don't. Then someone in your thread throws the DLP in there and now that has me even more confused. Good to have choices. The way I am, I get buyers guilt real badly, so I probably over-analyze and research just so I feel that I am making a wise buy.

I am picking my tv up tomorrow, and right now I still don't know what I am going with, I will see when I get there and see which looks best. At least I have the search narrowed down to 2.

        Good luck in your search.

Thanks I know just what you're talking about with the buyers guilt cause I get the exact same thing and I know with this tv and all the choices it's going to be hard to choose.

Panasonic and Samsung plamas are rated at a 100,000 hour life span.

            same as LCD.

I have a Panasonic Plasma and game on it extensively.

No burn in. Burn in is NOT an issue.

You MAY get image retention, but it only lasts a few minutes and can't be noticed when you are watching tv or playing a video game or watching a movie. The only time it is noticeable is if you switch to an input(for example Video 4) which you don't have a picture coming through and the screen is completely black. This may happen if you watch a movie with the bars on the top and bottom of a screen.

But, like I said it goes away very quickly. I would hate for someone to make their decision based on this.

Plasma has great color range, deep blacks, no motion blur, and you can sit anywhere in the room and the picture doesn't degrade.

Its never a bad thing to do too much research on these kinds of things, but as I said, go for a tv with HDMI if you can so you wont have to worry about upgrading the tv later.

When it comes down to it, you want something that will work, something that shows contrast and colors well, and something that might have a few features that you want like lots of inputs, hdmi inputs, etc....

The novelty of the picture will wear off a bit later on anyhow but after you've had it awhile its satisfying to be able to look at it and say to yourself, thats a really good picture.

BTW, I agree that plasma's are great.. and the poster above probably has one of the best out there. A buddy of mine has a panny plasma... and they are REEEEALY nice.

As I said before though, plasmas have the best colors, but LCD's aren't exactly joke tv's either.

Absolutely not. I hope I wasn't giving that impression.

You're correct, as Plasma generally can't be found under 42". However, you can occasionally find a good Samsung or Panasonic on Amazon or Frys.com for the close to that price. If he goes under 42" the decision on which technology to get has already been made.(LCD)

I agree completely with this statement and back it up whole heartly. I have a Samsung 50" plasma and game everyday and watch blu-ray also. Image retention last minutes if that when changing inputs (as that is the only time you can see it) and thats only when the brightness is turned up and if the image is a standstill image. Other than that its fantastic!

I was in the same boat. I actually prefer LCDs to plasma's. The new 120HZ 1080p Samsung plasma's have the best picture I've seen.

For the price range you set, you're probably looking at a 32" 1080p TV or maybe a 42" 720p set.

Definately shop around. Mom & Pop stores might have some good deals but stores like Best Buy you can catch sales, coupons, and use their rewards card to get a good deal.

A little more info about my situation, I had a Toshiba plasma but developed the red sparkles real bad...long story short, Toshiba is not trying to work on it, just give me a new one. I am shopping at Rex, probably considered a mom and pop store, they have 42" Panasonic Plasma on sale this week for $1,100, and my other choice is a 1080p LCD Toshiba Regza for the same price.

My previous plasma had no burn in, just retention, and I too gamed and watched Bluray on it. Loved the tv. Plasmas are sweet.

I'm just wondering to go with a tv that has 1080p capability to future proof, or go with the 720 Panny Plasma. Not stealing your thunder Jmood, I am wondering, not asking.

It's all a matter of preference IMO. I think Plasmas look better, that's why I have one for my main TV. Burn-in definitely isn't a problem anymore with the new plasmas, I play the PS3 and Wii on my plasma more than I watch TV these days LOL and have no problems. Lots of games these days also have cutscenes to break up static images.

For your price range, I'd probably look at a LCD though. I have a Westinghouse LCD that I've never had any problems with. It's a about a $100 over your price limit, but Best Buy has a 42" Westinghouse 1080p LCD for $899 but you can use a 10% coupon and get it for about $820.

You just cant mount them to a wall, you have to change the bulb once every 16 months or so, and the picture isnt as bright while watching at an angle (as its a projection screen)
FYI - The replacement bulbs for DLP's are not cheap ($100 to $200). I love my Toshiba DLP, but was not happy when I had to spend $150 for a new bulb.
