Re: Saw 5
Eh?
I'm just seeing all five movies in theaters. The first one starts at 4:00 PST, then 6:00 for Saw II, then 8:00, 10:10, and Saw V premieres at 12:00 (midnight). All for the price of $8.50.
The weird thing is, if you JUST buy a ticket for Saw V (that is, seeing the midnight showing and not any of the other ones), it costs the normal $10.50. That's right, $2.00 more for four movies less. Not sure why they have this offer, but it's great!
I'd love to be in a scene in Saw VI, though.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Saw 5
Ok, just got back from SAW V. I don't know what to exactly say about this film. It's cool that they filled in a lot of the gaps like they did with SAW III and Amanda.............yet I feel like at this point they are grasping for straws. I am a fan of this series, but if this does not end with SAW VI, there is a problem. Like Blzer and I have discussed in the past, this should have ended with SAW III. Even SAW IV was good imo, and I was one of the few that liked the film.
SpoilerDoes anyone think that Jigsaw's wife has much more to do with this than what we were led to believe? What in the hell is in that box is what I am wondering.
The ending death scene of Strahm was kind of neat.
I think the girl that survived at the end has something more to the story than we know. We never saw her hand or arm, I think the junkie dude gave a full 10 pints of blood.
Personally, SAW II was my least favorite in the franchise, but I think that SAW V may take the cake on that. Not that it was a bad movie, but after SAW IV..............I feel like this has been stretched out as far as you can take the story.Last edited by CaptainZombie; 10-24-2008, 03:11 AM.Comment

Re: Saw 5
I have the same thoughts as candyman. I came back from seeing this, and as a die-hard Saw fan, I was very content. I understand things a little more, and Jigsaw is becoming more human and less insane. However, if this indeed goes to six movies, Saw - Saw III is its own series, set for casual fans. Saw IV - Saw VI is about the origins of the Jigsaw killings, which happens to have more characters, as well as more deaths.
This movie wasn't even very gory, despite what many people said. It did its own thing, taking the elements of each Saw movie, and making it its own. I really didn't like Saw IV, and while I loved Saw V much more than Saw IV, I can't really say that it compares to the other ones. Not to say the other ones are better, but like it's comparing apples and oranges. This movie didn't really do much aside from filling gaps, that seems to be my belief.
That said, as a casual movie-goer, this movie is not recommended. This isn't even something to just "go see" on Halloween weekend, just because you want a good horror movie. This franchise fell far off the horror map after Saw II, but that's not to say this franchise isn't going in a good direction. For breaking the trilogy, I really like how there is still story. But to tout it for months and for us to only get that much out of the movie after waiting an entire year isn't exactly the right thing for them to do to us.
Basically, it was a great movie for me to watch, maybe a few more times because I want to be sure of some things. But it's not a movie for the replay value or to invite people over to see. It's for the die-hards, and it is still very much in transition. The directing was ten thousand times better than what we've seen from Bousman, and I think that was the best thing that came out of this year that surely met expectations.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

While at the Scream Awards after party we caught up with Saw V director David Hackl who has just returned from a trip to Japan to promote the latest SAW film, which arrives in theaters October 24th. He tells us that he can't wait for his director's cut to hit DVD next year as it'll have tons more gore and scenes arranged in different order. The director's cut is also approximately 14 minutes longer (give or take). In addition, we asked around to all of the SAW related attendees who all say, "SAW VII? Let's worry about the sixth film first...." Kevin Greutert is directing Saw VI for Lionsgate.Comment

Re: Saw 5
Okay, I think I know how to put this movie into words a little better:
First of all, I still think it's hard to say what I think about this movie, because I know that while I loved it, many people will disagree and say they hated it, wish the series was over. etc. But this movie was actually a guilty pleasure for me; though I didn't expect the movie to be even remotely close to what it was, I was never once dissatisfied with the product that was released for us. Again, I know a lot of people aren't going to feel the same, and it may be because, with the direction they are now going, you guys may no longer be "true" Saw fans.
What do I mean by that? Why is it that I referred to myself as a "true" Saw fan? Well, the way I see it, the franchise's style is formed exactly by what's put on screen. Yes, even the aforementioned lackluster effort of Saw IV is a representation of the overall series, perhaps even changing the outlook on what the Saw franchise is truly about.
That said, this movie was great in a way that it intangibly is an indication of whether you're a fan of these movies because of the games and ending twist, or whether you're a fan of the story being told. I found out, after watching this movie, that I am the latter. The traps didn't make me cringe, hold my breath, squirm and hope for the best in each situation... they weren't even that great. Additionally, this movie was full of little bumps and turns to keep you watching, thinking, understanding... the ending twist was hardly even a twist, I would say. It didn't raise hairs for me, widen my eyes, make me think about it after I watched it, no... no, that didn't do it for me.
So now you ask, how is it that I liked this movie if the traps and twist are either lackluster, tame, or even non-apparent? My answer is that the story itself kept me in the movie. It was the dialogue that kept this movie going, and it was the element of keeping me interested that made me enjoy this movie very much. This is where the element of Saw kicks in. James Wan's original intent was to tell a story long before to showcase a torture movie, and Saw V did the same thing.
It also took elements of Saw II by having the five people in one place, putting their own pieces to the Jigsaw puzzle together (this is metaphorically important for the series), elements of Saw III by tying in the past very well, showing us things that we didn't know about characters before, and it also showed elements of Saw IV... basically, continuing the story with the new trilogy, created with new characters and Jigsaw background.
I think the one thing that makes this trilogy great is that, no matter what the plan was from the get-go (whether it was good or bad), there was a plan from the get-go. You see, after Saw were no plans for a sequel. In fact, Saw II was re-written from another script, so to even say that its intent was originally to be Saw-related is incorrect. Then Saw III, written in not two weeks, was a supposed final chapter. Well, one way I can created Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan is they have a set trilogy in mind following what happened in Saw - Saw III. After Saw IV, they quickly went to work on Saw V (and it seems very obvious that they had a plan for Saw V from imagery in Saw IV) and Saw VI was supposedly worked on at the same time. That said, elements from this second trilogy won't seem as "forced" as they were the first time around, like the house being above the bathroom and Amanda being in on it from the get-go, etc. To know that they already have a definite ending in mind and evolving the story around that is a great thing for this franchise, and if anything, this movie has me looking forward to Saw VI more and more.
Again, I can't compare this one to the other movies, though I know for sure that it beat out Saw IV in my book. But let me say this: I was at first very disappointed (even skeptic) about them making a Saw IV because I loved the trilogy so very much and I didn't want them to ruin my baby (demoralize the contents in the first three movies) by making a Saw IV. Let's just say that Saw V did the exact opposite... if anything came out of this movie, it's that it heightened my likeness for the first four movies (yes, even Saw IV). It was carefully planned and written, and very well executed.
Like I said, I left the theater very content. I was not one bit disappointed (though misled with what I thought the movie was really going to focus on, I suppose), though it didn't have the same shock/surprise factor the first three movies had. You know what I have to say to that? It's okay, it really is. A casual fan couldn't care less about this movie, and that's why it will probably hit a new low on the Tomatometer, but it really doesn't deserve it. If the reviewers did the Sawfest like I did, they would see exactly how Saw V puts the pieces of the puzzle together, while leaving room for yet one concluding chapter to really make the Saw universe come full circle.
As you can see, I can write a lot about this movie without really talking about the movie (in some people's eyes, these movies are just the traps and twist). It really is that deep of a story as a whole, and really makes you want to discuss it amongst your peers. Thankfully, there is a Saw message board devoted to that, and I will be on it all weekend giving my insight as to what went down and hoping I can get stuff from others as well, in case I missed anything. As a die-hard Saw fan, though this wasn't a groundbreaking movie by any means, it really fit the mold of how things finally make sense in this franchise that didn't once before. Motives, character analyses, origins... it's all happening in this trilogy. In a way, though they chronologically succeed the first three, they are in their own right a prequel to the first trilogy. I never really knew that a movie could go forward by going backward, but that is yet another thing the creators of this franchise has outwitted us with.
If Saw VI pulls something terrific out of its *** after what Saw V left us anticipating for the conclusion of this franchise, I will be the first to admit that I was wrong about them breaking the trilogy, and that this seems to now be truly for the fans that keep wanting more (though more story, more insight, etc.). If you've followed this series from the beginning and want to know a little more, I don't suppose that throwing a Hamilton down on a second or third weekend of this movie's release is the worst thing in the world. In fact, if you're a die-hard, I recommend that you regard this post highly when you are watching the movie, and you really take a step back and consider what kind of Saw fan you really are. And as a fan of the story, I am only jumping for joy about this extra 14 minutes that the director's cut will have. I'm not anticipating even one bit more shed of blood as much as I am one more word of dialogue or element of character progression.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Saw 5
I sort of made a post earlier regarding why sequels to this franchise are still being made (forget what page it's on), but that post was important, because my take is unless you've given up on this series some time ago, I don't see why anybody would ever just plain stop seeing them when there is so much left unresolved. Like who would genuinely stop watching the Saw movies after Saw IV? That makes no sense whatsoever... there were so many things that needed to be answered, and you would just leave them there?
So the answer is yes, it is worth seeing. That said, whether you want to see it now or during a Sawfest right before Saw VI is really up to you. Depends on whether you think $10 is worth risking, I suppose I'll say that. But again, if you take my previous post into consideration when watching this movie, I think you'll at least come out satisfied, perhaps that the $10 wasn't a total blow, but that maybe you could have waited on this one (reason I would ever say that is because I don't want to wait 365 days for the next installment).Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

But just remember, the Tomatometer will tell you that Saw V isn't a good piece of film, and they may be correct... but it is a guilty pleasure designed for the very fans that made this movie possible in the first place. I have seen many films the Tomato gave below 20% and liked them. The 8% of whatever it is doesn't scare me....especially considering the community rating (which I follow a bit more) is still 45% which represents at least some liked it.Comment
