If you've followed this series from the beginning and want to know a little more, I don't suppose that throwing a Hamilton down on a second or third weekend of this movie's release is the worst thing in the world. In fact, if you're a die-hard, I recommend that you regard this post highly when you are watching the movie, and you really take a step back and consider what kind of Saw fan you really are. And as a fan of the story, I am only jumping for joy about this extra 14 minutes that the director's cut will have. I'm not anticipating even one bit more shed of blood as much as I am one more word of dialogue or element of character progression.
Well thought out post Blzer. Now, my only confusion is that if you enjoy the story elements of SAW V, why don't you enjoy SAW IV? Remember that the story in SAW IV is the central focus like in SAW V and the traps play a secondary fiddle as opposed to the original trilogy. I really like this series and think that they have done something where sequels aren't just pure utter garbage like in the Nightmare, Friday, and Halloween series were. I do hope that SAW VI is the ultimate ending to this franchise. Then after that if they want to make a spin off of sorts go for it, but I would like to see this all end in the next installment. They threw so many more questions in SAW V, that it is great.

I think that the box may contain more videotapes the more I think about it. That was a fairly larger sized box, so it could be anything.

Reading more reviews this morning, too many people being negative and bashing this film because there wasn't enough gore. I am not too sure what people are expecting, this franchise took a turn with SAW IV into this new direction of telling a story first and then the gore second. It was good that they gave us a lot more background of the gaps between SAW I - IV and my Hoffman joined Jigsaw. That part with the shotgun was rather cool as Hoffman sat there thinking about his situation and even greater when he had the razor in hand to make a greater choice.

While Jigsaw wasn't in the film as much, it is the lasting appeal and after effects that he has left behind.

The ending was fantastic imo and reminds me so much of the ending of the original in terms of shock because Strahm had the choices and solution right in his face, except chose otherwise.

      Re: Saw 5

To answer your question, I can relate it back to Saw II. Remember the twist with the footage not being live and Daniel being in the safe the whole time? In my head, not only was that the better twist, but that was the main twist. Amanda's played second-fiddle to that, seeing that hers tied in with what that one was all about. But what happened there? Because of certain directing choices, the emphasis on the time twist was not only weak, but people ended up getting confused because there was literally no emphasis on it. Instead, Amanda got it all when her tape started playing. They go in the wrong house, press pause on the tape to show that it isn't live, then: "It's not live." "Kerry, we're in the wrong house! Let's go, team!" End scene. Yes, beautiful execution there, pahtnah.

I'd say the same with Saw IV. Yes, the story was first; however, there was an issue, and it was Bousman's directing. It made you to believe that there was a lurking variable that dominated both the gore and the stories, and it was just the overall quick pace. Now I don't know if you went to a Sawfest like I did, but if you did, you would see how differently David Hackl used his ninety minutes to how Darren Bousman did. You see, Bousman had probably about two hours of material to work with, but wasn't even close to utilizing it. For example, take the scene when Rigg wakes up with the shower water running on him. What could have been slowed down a bit for a couple of minutes even was done in seven seconds, no joke. Sometimes, the audience needs time to breathe... Saw IV didn't give us that opportunity, and fell on its face because of it.

However, I didn't like the story much anyway. Yes, it was interesting, and yes, it made Saw V what it was... but I think breaking that trilogy and forcing new characters began as a bad idea, at least until I saw Saw V. Nonetheless, the characters that I liked in Saw V I didn't like in Saw IV, and I'm still blaming the directing for that.

There are a lot of people blaming the directing of SAW IV has their distaste of the film and I see where you are coming from. I don't know what it is, but I really enjoyed SAW IV a lot over time. Remember how much I didn't care for it at first and after watching it a few times, it really changed my mind. I think I had seen it 2-3 times in the theater and once via bootleg. I started to see more and more of things that I missed each time.

Have you heard any rumors of a SAW VII? Because I have heard a few circulating and if that is the case I can see this series totally getting watered down and going down the crapper really fast for me. I still feel like this story needs to end with the next installment.

Over the summer I got it on DVD as part of a buy four used DVDs for $20 deal at Blockbuster, and every time the opening autopsy scene gives me hope that "Hey, maybe I'll like it this time..." I've seen it maybe six times since then, every time I couldn't get myself to liking it.

Then I saw it again last night in theaters. The first movie was amazing, but I think I may have seen it TOO many times now (I was reciting every line in my head before it popped up... I annoyed myself haha)... then Saw II came on and I got distracted for half the move texting this girl. Then Saw III came on and I realized that Saw III is officially my favorite of the franchise, especially the theatrical version (the way it ends on John's corpse instead of Lynn's head speaks volumes). In all, I really felt the trilogy there. Then Saw IV came on, and it felt nothing like those three, with story, dialogue, directing... everything. In my extremely long post, I think I sort of say how Saw V takes elements of all of them and makes it its own, and I really liked that.

I really do not want a Saw VII, and I think I agree with you that if they are going past six I'm not going to be very happy.

I think they set it up for one more movie. I think it was okay but it did push the story along nicely, although the basic laws of physics are not being questioned. I enjoyed it.

I loved it. Not going to go into detail because I am tired, but one thing I didn't like, nothing to do with the movie, was that VI was already confirmed which kind of sort of ruined the ending, since you kind of know how it would end, ya know? Other than that, it was great.

By the way, some people just may not have understood this movie. Don't worry, this movie is very easy to follow, especially compared to that of Saw IV... it's just that you may not have yet connected all of the dots. Allow me to explain:

Some guy posted that over at The House of Jigsaw 2 days ago and I think it really helps make sense of things.

The film made $12 million dollars on Friday. Not bad considering it was going up against High School Musical 3 which made $17 million on Friday.

I'll be seeing this sometime in the next week (I'm on vacation now, not sure when I'll fit it in), but I'm not sure if I'll like it or not. I kinda enjoy the story, and it's important there is a good plot, but I'm not one of those people who watched every movie 5 times to see the little Jigsaw tricks, etc. I more go into it looking for a creepy, scary movie with a kinda moral-ish plot, some reason all this is happening.

Oh, there used to be a poster here Jigsaw, I bet he'd love this movie

I saw it yesterday and i really liked it. I admit i got lost with the story in the ones before but this really tied it up for me. I like this one the best because i felt it had a better dialog than the others.
