There are five or six tracks on this record that stand up with anything they've done yet. As Craig Finn states in the title track, "the sing-alongs songs'll be our scriptures".
Agreed. Best record I've heard this year, even better than "Brighter Than Creation's Dark" by DBT. The Hold Steady's record has no throwaway tracks -- not one. DBT's record has a couple I could easily skip, but the rest are great.

I'd put Sigur Ros' new record -- I won't even try to write the name! -- in my top five, too. "Consolers of the Lonely" by The Raconteurs is damn good. I'd also put "Real Animal" by Alejandro Escovedo in there.

So, time for a top five:

    5. "Real Animal," Alejandro Escovedo
    4. Sigur Ros' new record
    3. "Consolers of the Lonely," The Raconteurs
    2. "Brighter Than Creation's Dark," Drive-By Truckers
    1. "Stay Positive," The Hold Steady

As for the most overrated records, that's neck and neck between Vampire Weekend and Mudcrutch. Vampire Weekend is world beat pop lite that is like junk food -- tastes great for the first few plays and then is utterly forgettable. Mudcrutch is a Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' album. We've had plenty of those, and they're all starting to sound the same.

    Take care,
    PK

Pk, have you heard Hayes Carll yet? I just picked it up today. Pretty damn good Texas-country.

          2) Theory of a Deadman - Scars and Souvenirs

          1) Three Doors Down (self-titled album)

But Alter Bridge's "Blackbird" and Jimmy Eat World's "Chase This Light" were a pleasant surprise to the end of last year's album purchases.
Who We Are came out last year.

So far, the only two I really feel are worth listing.

          2. Shinedown - The Sound Of Madness
          1. 3 Doors Down - Self-Titled

If the new Breaking Benjamin CD makes it out this year it'll be up there.

I saw Carll open for the Old 97's in early July and picked up his new record the next day. Very, very good stuff. I need to check out the new Escovedo and I still need to hear the Bon Iver disk.

Radiohead doesn't count for me since it was widely available in october of 07.
Update: Throw on Beneath the Sky - The Day the Music Died in third. I haven't been able to give the new Emarosa release a listen yet, hopefully I'll be able to download it this weekend.

Nice to see i'm not the only one who listens to them.

But their album isn't as good as I was hoping, but you may find it a little more pleasing than I.

the album that I did come across that was actually good is 'Want' by 3OH!3 which has a variety of superb songs.

You can listen to the entire 3OH!3 album on their myspace.

                        Top 3...

Coldplay - Viva la Vida or Death And All His Friends

                          D'oh! Thanks.

It's just that I bought it this year so I guess I convinced myself that it was this year.

Staind, The Fray, and Switchfoot are supposed to have new albums out later this year. I hope those fair to be pretty good.

                              1. The Black Keys - Attack & Release

Having just picked up Beck's "Modern Guilt" a couple of days ago, I think it'll crack that top 5 for me somewhere. Not sure where yet, but somewhere.

Pretty weak year overall IMO, I'm really looking forward to the new Hold Steady album next week.

The only two albums I've gotten this year that impress me. The new In Flames album "A Sense of Purpose" isn't bad either, but nothing essential.
