Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Favorite album: Knock Madness. Long awaited forme. Never was a fan of Hop's early work, hated Raw, but love the Ill Mind Series and Pans in the Kitchen. Absolutely loved this album top to bottom. Few features but did their job. Interesting situations with this album, dropped on itunes, but was delayed in physical copy in stores a week, but stores didn't order many of them, despite it being hyped. Turned out to be a very good album.

    Favorite verse(s)
: It was King Kendrick's year despite not dropping an album. But I'm not going with the popular Control verse, I feel his verse in the TDE Cypher was better.

    Punchline/Bar of the year:
"I got your bitch tossing my salad, pass the croutons." - Hopsin (Lunchtime Cypher)
"My grandma watching, so I ain't gon' curse." - Ab-Soul (TDE Cypher)

Favorite track: Hip Hop Sinister. Hopsin showing his dark side, absolutely love this track. Definitely peep it if you haven't.

Favorite newcomer: Isaiah Rashad. Expecting huge things from him, could be the next big thing. TDE has a good eye. I Shot You Down was very good, Ronnie Drake was solid (I don't mind SZA, either), Brad Jordon was dope. His mixtape Cilvia will definitely be my favorite of 2014.

Most slept-on release: Knock Madness, again. I just don't think enough people have heard this masterpiece.

Best Control response: Joell Ortiz. He came in hard right away. Wish more bigger names would have responded, but Joell did his thing coming out strong and early.

Things to look forward to in 2014:

The TDE takeover. They will solidify themselves as the best label in the world. Top Dawg said they'll drop 6 albums. I would think that means one from each. But I don't foresee that happening. I don't see Isaiah Rashed dropping Cilvia as well as an album. And I don't see Kendrick dropping a joint yet, especially not if it's the last one of the year for TDE. Also, never know what to expect from the secret weapon, Jay Rock. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they'll only drop 4 albums and a mixtape. Q's Oxymoron will drop, obviously. Cilvia, Isaiah Rashad's mixtape will drop, Ab-Soul will drop an album, most likely named Black Lip Pastor, SZA will have an album, and then I say that Kendrick OR Jay Rock will put out a project in the last quarter of 2014, the other will put one out in early 2015.

Favorite Album: Drake - Nothing Was The Same. It was basically going to come down to this and My Name is My Name from hometown hero Pusha T, but Drizzy takes it home this year. Every time I listen to the album I find a new favorite song. I listened to it 2 times through on my way up and back to Maryland this past weekend, and it's still great. Tried to play MNIMN, the ****ing Kelly Rowland song ruins the album. I despise it. I'm going to delete it from my iTunes, I don't know how that even made the cut.

Favorite Mixtape: Chance the Rapper Acid Rap takes this one. This mixtape is perfect front to back, and even better a second time straight through when you realize that the album ends on a loop, ready to start again perfectly at the beginning. I just love everything about it, Chain Smoker is one of my top 5 songs of the year, and as a college student, the bars in Acid Rain about not wanting to get rich cause n****s still getting bodied for foams hits me right in the feels. Honorable mention for Migos Young Rich N****s, for being just the best turn up tape a college kid could ask for.

Favorite Verse: Pusha T on Nosetalgia. This one was easy and shouldn't take much explanation but...

Tried to fight the urge like Ivan Drago, if he dies he dies
Like Doughboy to Tre, if he rides he rides
Throwing punches in his room, if he cries he cries
and then the next 5 lines are just the grimiest **** I've ever heard. Pusha never disappoints.

Favorite Track: Ballin by Young Chop. Chop is my favorite producer, he's the guy who orchestrated Chief Keef's rise to prominence and however you feel about Keef, his beats are some of the hardest out. This is my most played song of the year, even though it didn't come out until September, getting 316 plays in the last 4 months of the year. (I listen to a lot of music lol).

          NSFW

          Spoiler

Favorite Newcomer: Chance came out with a mixtape last year, but I consider this his breakout year so I'm giving it to him. I don't really know how many of the people I listen to are actually new or I'm just now finding out about them so this is a hard category for me. I like Isaiah Rashad, but he didn't put out a project that I can really base his talent on, only a few songs here and there.

Most Slept on Release: Gotta go with my guy Young Chop here with Precious. I know he's a producer who makes a very specific type of music so if you don't like that music at all you won't enjoy the whole tape, but the album is full of bangers and I'm excited to see what he can do next year hopefully reuniting with Chief Keef and giving us Back from the Dead 2 like he wants to. Song you guys might like off of Precious (nsfw of course):

          Spoiler

Overall, I'd say it's been a pretty good year. New releases from Drake, Gambino, Chop, Danny Brown, Chance, Eminem (even though I hated it), Pusha T, A$AP Rocky and Ferg, The Weeknd, Mac Miller (who low key completely reinvented himself and never stopped putting out solid **** this entire year) and Juicy J all kept me happy through the year. Some flops IMO (Yeezus, MCHG, The Gifted, Hall of Fame) hurt me but there were enough solid projects to keep me satisfied throughout.

Favorite Album: MMLP2. At first I thought it was alright but after the 2nd listen I really loved it. I'm not sure where I'd rank it in terms of my favorite Eminem albums but I was a fan of Recovery and this may have been better.

Favorite Mixtape: Curren$y- New Jet City. Good beats, some of his best lyrically, and the features he got really fit in well.

Favorite Verse- Big Krit on 1 Train- I'm sure Kendrick will get all the love for shock value on Control, but I didn't hear anything better to me then Krit's combo of lyrics and flow on this song that featured like 5 rappers

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

I'm really looking forward to seeing what 2014 brings for the Death Grips. In the three years they have existed They have brought so much to the hip hop game. First with their Exmilitary tape that showcases MC Ride's rapping over Hill's drumming with Flatlander's production. Then in 2012 they came out with The money Store, their first full length album. This album is more balanced between Ride and Hill in regards to the rapping and drums and the production from Flatlander is still top notch. Then later that year came another full length album No Love Deep Web, the only problem was that they had to release the album on their own going around their label not wanting to release it until 2013. No Love is possibly their best album yet (imo) but I also really like The Money Store.. And their newest album Government Plates. This album features Flatlander predominantly over the other two. It is still death grips but also a very different sound.

Here's my favorite track from each album and the mixtape:

                Anne Bonny - Government Plates

A close second to Anne Bonny is Whatever I Want (**** Who's Watching)

Imo these three guys are the most original and most progressive Hip Hop group around today. They are imo the future of hip hop. Now I haven't (yet) listened to Yeezus but I have heard it takes a lot of influence from Death Grips and borderlines on ripping them off.

Off to see if I can make it through Yeezus now..

Favorite Album: My Name is My Name. Pusha brought it on this album and it was easily the one with the most plays from me. Two of my favorite tracks this year were on the CD with Nosestalgia and Suicide. Crazy bars from top to bottom.

Runners up would be the other two albums trob mentioned besides these.

                      Favorite Mixtape:
Blue Chips 2*. Big Action Bronson fan and this was an easy one for me so far.

*Still need to listen to The Soul Tape 3.

Favorite Verse: Pusha T, Nosestalgia. Basically look at DieHardYankee's post. His Suicide verse is right behind this, as well as Chris' choice which brings me too...

Favorite Track: 1 Train. Just loads of talent on this track punctuated with K.R.I.T.'s amazing verse at the end of it.

Man, I felt like this was a down year as far as Album Releases go. But that's also because my interest in Music this year wasn't as high as it used to be because the only time I know when something of significance drops, I read about it here. Now Mixtape releases, there were a lot of dope joints that dropped.

Fav. Album: Pusha T, My Name Is My Name. Drake's NWTS in 2nd.

Fav. Mixtape: Curren$y, New Jet City. Dope production, good lyrics, the not too many features but just enough. Blue Chips 2 and King Remembered In Time in a close second.

Fav. Verse: Pusha T on Nosestalgia. Killer Mike's verse on Sea Legs and Meek's 2nd verse on "Lil ***** Snupe".

Fav. Track: Clear - Curren$y Feat. Jadakiss on New Jet City. Statik Selektah with the productions, Jadakiss with the hot bars. Gets no better.

That new Fab mixtape is solid from start to finish. Now he needs to take the formula from his mixtape series, mix in a bounce track or two and a classic Fab song for the ladies to make an album.

No list from me this year. Haven't listened to enough of stuff to justify one.

And I just noticed this but I think GTA ****ed up your calendar dude haha. Illuminate is over a year and a half old. ****in' Problems is old too.
Yeah, it did lol. But ****in' Problems could technically be considered 2013 since Long. Live. A$AP was a January release. It just leaked a month early.

Here's an awesome Chance cover for the next issue of The Source:
