Yeah. I haven't listened from start to finish yet, but so far it's pretty good.

Seen that boy Cole World live at the Rihanna show tonight in Dallas. He was good and a lot of people seemed to know his songs. He performed Work Out, In the Morning, Who Dat and Blow Up. Rihanna came on a shut it down. Didn't think I'd like her as I don't know any of her songs on the latest CD.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Good evening gentlemen. I enter a thread I don't much belong in because I have a serious rap/hip hop related question, and I know that the good people of OS tend to be good about rational discourse, so here I am.

First off, let me preface this a little bit. I admit I am not much of a fan of the genre in general. It's generally not my cup of tea, in large part due to how much autotune seems to be around anything made in the last few years (that effect makes me want to jump off a bridge, worst thing to happen to the music industry) I'm also big on instrumentals in music, a lot of mediocre generic pop-rap (which, sadly, is what I often am subjected to) is just the same thing looped for 10 seconds, and I get bored. But those are my personal tastes.

But even though I don't listen, I have heard songs I like, and I have heard artists that I can listen to and say "That guy has some talent." I can see, even if I don't personally share the interest, how certain songs and certain artists appeal to others and why people like their music.

But there is one particular rapper, who I have (to my great disdain) heard far too often amongst people my age. This man brings pain to my eardrums, and I can not for the life of me understand how anyone can find this man appealing in any way shape or form.

                        That man is "Lil Wayne."

I just don't get it. His voice in general is just bad IMO (far worse autotuned) His lyrics have the structure of 2nd grader writing, and are redundant (We get it, you like weed, money, women, and think you're awesome) The instrumentals for his music seems bland and uninspired, and half the time it doesn't even feel like he's actually even trying to rap or flow with the beats.

I've asked friends of mine what the appeal is, and they've never given me any kind of answer other than "he's just that awesome", "he's the troof" or "you're just a *****."

So I come to this site, where rational discourse (Unless it's about Madden and socks...) exists and this thread where I know I'll find people knowledgeable about the topic. What is Lil Wayne's appeal?

I'm just a man looking for answers.

Beats me, I have always struggled to understand Wayne's 'brilliance' as well.

He has a couple of nice metaphors and lines occasionally from what I have heard but his voice is pretty annoying (only imo of course) and like you said 99% of the time he's rapping about money, ho's and cars so I prefer my hip hop with more substance but maybe someone here can aware us both.

I've tried to like him by listening to multiple albums and have even watched the documentary about him but still don't get it why the guy is so popular either.

Well the main thing you have to keep in mind is that almost all of the immature, younger, constantly partying people are Wayne fans and that's probably more than half of what drives who's the popular artist and who isn't.

He does have his moments where he can put out a good song, but most of that came from his earlier mixtape days. I think the death of whatever good Wayne music there was came from that ****ing Lollipop song. You couldn't turn a radio on or walk down a street without hearing that damn song playing.

And yeah, he doesn't have the greatest voice and if you can't look past that then it's unlikely you're going to like anything he puts out. He definitely isn't someone who should be trying to use autotune considering it makes him sound even worse.

About the whole "money, cars, hos, weed are all he raps about", well that's pretty much half the mainstream rappers out there, not just Wayne.

Yeah, sadly just about any rap/hip hop I hear is at college parties, they eat stuff like Wayne up. Maybe I'd have to be completely blasted out of my mind to be able to enjoy it.

As for the second part, that probably is a turnoff of the genre for me too, it gets redundant I think. Plus, the never ending self-promotion and the unneeded over-use of the "n" word. Of course, not all rap is like this, but I feel like I only get exposed to the crappy party/dance club nonsense.
