Carter 1 & 2 were great and raised expectations...Then he releases Carter 3, I am not a human being and now Carter 4...He regressed IMHO

Unless the official album is much better.

Oh no not at all my friend. I was just pointing out some random tweets by other artists and what they thought about that Wayne line about silent g's and lasagna.

Yes, Carter 1 and 2 were great but that was like 6 years ago? I think we all can agree that he's been going downhill the past few years.

I agree, underdogs wanna shine. But Wayne can put out a verse of him muttering into a mic and giggling, people would still say he killed the track. What I'm saying is I don't believe he has that hunger like he use to.

Yea but after Carter 3 was released, he said in interviews that he was going to go back to the Carter 2 roots and was going to do an experiment album (the rock album) that he didn't want to be in "Tha Carter" series...So yea with those expectations yes, I am disappointed...

Exactly. All he does now is throw out every punchline that he can. Seeing as so many of them are average or below, it negates any of the good lines he has. Couple that in with his weird *** laughing and that he says the same thing in pretty much every song now and you have the reason why I think he's pretty disappointing now.

Ohh okay I see. I understand the disappointment, but when he rarely puts out anything great like he use to, what do you really expect? Even though he said he's going back to his roots, I wouldn't take his word for it. It would have been great if he actually did go back to the Carter 2 roots but at this point I don't see that ever happening. That Wayne is dead IMO.. Hopefully I'm wrong though.

I was a big Wayne fan during the Carter 1 & 2, mixtape days....I loved the way he raised his ability...straight raw and hungry.....

Then comes Carter 3....He has the chance to kind of "take the reigns" from Jay-Z on "Mr Carter" by dropping a dope verse....instead we get "beetlejuice, beetlejuice, beetlejuice". I was dissapointed in him for half stepping on that track.

Ever since then hes been hit or miss w\ me....I think 6'7 is ILL, but for every 6'7, there a "How to Love" around the corner LOL

But an underground rapper like Elzhi twists that into "Floss Jewels, Flash Ice, hit the grass twice and get higher than a gas price." He's still saying "I got bling, money, whatever, and get high" but it's actually creative with the way he puts its. It's different than just saying "My jewelry so expensive, I'm so high."

And mainstream rappers other than Eminem really don't have the ability to connect their bars to tell a story, or do anything creative with their lyrics. The difference between mainstream and underground is how the music is written. There's more emphasis on the lyrics, the rhyme schemes, the flow, the delivery, the MC'ing aspect. The Art form itself.

But a lot of these mainstream rappers sound the same, have simple lyrics that anybody could write (Have you seen Gucci Mane's verses?), the music is made with a different goal.

That's the nerdy way to say it, but it is what it is. Mainstream rap doesn't suck because all they talk about is money and drugs. Have you heard that new Nas and Common joint? All they talk about is women. But they do it in a way that no mainstream rapper ever could. It's a dope song with great lyrics even though it is about nothing but women.

"I notice all my flaws when it comes to writin rhymes
subject matter, it changes to quickly at times
so I keep strictly about dimes, and stick to the story
call me a pro in the ***** category
Had explicit experiences I shouldn't mention
for me getting girls turned a sport into addiction
powerful women playing the roles of submission"

That's just a simple Nas verse about women. Has Gucci Mane or Wocka Flocka written anything like that before? Haha no. Because it doesn't sell. Mainstream sounds the way it does, because it makes money.

Where as the typical mainstream rapper would be like "The girls all up on my D, big money stacks, got so many girls i'm so cool, snow" And people would listen to it and it would be a radio hit and the artist would make a lot of money.

And when I say mainstream, I mean people like Gucci Mane, Wocka Flocka, Birdman, Lil Wayne, and Drake to some extent. Eminem is mainstream but he's a lot different than them.
This is such a gross generalization it's ridiculous. The ONLY difference between mainstream and underground rappers is that the former are known, get radio spins, and sell records, while the latter are largely unknown. That's it.

Lupe, Common, early Jay and Kanye, Eminem, Royce, Jadakiss, AZ, The Roots, Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, Nas, Pac and BIG, J. Cole, B.o.B., Game, Redman, Mos Def, Kweli.... man I could probably keep going, but the point is they all are/were mainstream artists. Mainstream isn't just Soulja Boi.

Also, while the above point is often hammered home, what isn't often talked about is there are A LOT of underground rappers that make crappy *** Soulja-esque music that doesn't get spins and doesn't sell. You can find this crappy music on Youtube and it is just as underground and MC Afrikka and Conscience Jewlez. Underground Rap is not some Xanadu where bad music doesn't exist and the mainstream is not this music wasteland where nothing ill resides.

The real difference is it is cool to hate on anything that's popular and this goes beyond music to all other forms of art and entertainment from the Lakers to John Cena. It's fine to hate on something (hell I hate the Lakers), but know why you're doing it. Because a lot of people hate simply because it's the "cool" thing to do, and what we have is a post like the above making sweeping statements.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

Just got home from the Rock the Bells. What an amazing experience.

I got there right as Souls of Mischief were opening up their set. The crowd was slowly trickling in but their energy level was sky high since they were in their hometown. The crowd went nuts when '93 til Infinity came on and A-Plus told the story how he almost gave the beat away before the other members told him to go get it back. Obviously, with Souls of Mischief in the building, the rest of the crew wasn't far away and Hieroglyphics came out and finished the set.

It was a little weird to have Common come out so early (Noon), but he did not disappoint. He set the bar so high as far as performances go, only a few could match it. He performed his Be album, which for some strange reason, the person I was with had never heard. By the end of his set, my friend was ready to leave and download the album. He also performed some of his older songs (I Used To Love Her) and a song off Universal Mind Control. He left the stage and his DJ continued to tear it up. He absolutely murdered the intro to B.I.G.'s Ten Crack Commandments. Common came back out and decided to kick a freestyle. Some dude in the audience kept yelling at Common that "he had flows". Common brought the guy onstage and he RIPPED it! The crowd went nuts. Common then dropped an insane freestyle. And yes, I honestly believe that it was a true freestyle. The crowd went nuts again.

I stayed at the main stage and listened to Black Star, but they were very disappointing. The energy level was real low when compared to Common's set. The only time the crowd got excited was when Common came back out for his verse on Respiration.

I made my way over to the Paid Dues stage, which was maybe 25 feet away from the 36 Chambers stage. Surprisingly, there would be no overlap as far as the sound went. Shout out to the technical crews. Well, almost. I was there to see Big K.R.I.T. and his set was delayed because they couldn't get the sound working. Thankfully, they got it working and K.R.I.T. put on a hell of a show. I'm pretty sure I was a little bit deaf afterwards and my chest hurt from all the bass. He definitely covered all of his bases and made sure the people got to hear their favorite songs:

                          Country ****
                          Hometown Hero
                          Glass House
                          Children of the World
                          Return of 4eva
                          Moon and Stars
                          My Sub
                          Time Machine
                          Rotation
                          Sookie Now
                          Made A Lot
                          R4 Theme Song

After he closed, Slaughterhouse came on and just killed it. Joe Budden is funny as hell. He kept talking to this "pretty girl with a hot dog" that kept going back and forth between the stages. Telling her to stop being indecisive and show some loyalty. He cracked a couple of more jokes as they ran through group and individual songs. Because they were in California, Joell asked Crooked I to spit an acappella. Crooked definitely made California proud. They could have played more songs, but they played songs from their homestates and had the audience sing the lyrics.

                          Sound Off
                          Onslaught 2
                          Not Tonight
Sober Up (Joe Budden and Crooked I)
                          Fastlane (Royce Da 5'9)
                          Microphone
                          Hip Hop Hooray (New Jersey)
                          Juicy (Brooklyn)
                          Lose Yourself (Detroit)
                          The Next Episode (Southern California)

I went back to the main stage to check out Nas perform Illmatic. He had DJ Premier with him, AZ came out, and Pete Rock made a special appearance. The set was cool, but after coming from Big K.R.I.T. and Slaughterhouse, I needed more energy. And because Illmatic is such a short album, they needed to fill the time. Pete Rock and DJ Premier had a "battle" where they just played some of the songs they had produced. Mobb Deep performed at the same time as Slaughterhouse, so they came through and were getting ready to perform with Nas when I left.

I headed back over to the Paid Dues stage as Childish Gambino's band was setting up. That dude is one insane individual. It was like a rock concert. Drums, two guitars, a xylophone, and a tamborine. He was all over the place and the crowd was going crazy, jumping up and down. Everyone knew the lyrics to his songs so when he couldn't finish a line because he was out of breath, everyone did it for him. He jumped on top of one of the big speakers and started rapping, then got down into the crowd. He was performing at the same time as Gza and he held his own despite half of the Wu-Tang Clan working the crowd into a frenzy on the next stage and even dropped a song off his new album:

                          *****, Look at Me Now
                          So Fly
                          Let Me Dope You
                          Got This Money
                          Do Ya Like
                          I Be On That
                          Freaks and Geeks

Immortal Technique, Raekwon and Ghostface, and Lauryn Hill were all slated to perform as the final shows of the night but I decided to leave. I was tired from standing up all day, thirsty because I refused to buy $14 beers or $5 waters or $6 lemonades, and hungry because the food was just as expensive. It was an amazing experience and I am definitely going back next year.

                            *****, Look at Me Now
                            So Fly

He is easily my favorite rapper right now. I wish he would come to Buffalo, because his shows look sweet. Half of it is stand up and the other half is a concert.

To me it's more that he doesn't have much left in the tank. He's pretty much known worldwide and has made a ****load of money. Most artists once they get to that point tend to fade out and basically rest on what they did in the past Vince Carter-style.

Jay has gotten to this point and a prime example of him just turning "it" on whenever he pleases is Empire State of Mind. I think Kanye is (or has - you could argue either way) getting to this point as well. He still hasn't put out a bad album IMO, but his lyrics have taken a drop since about Late Registartion because now it's more about his designer **** and models he's smashed instead of songs like All Falls Down or Roses.

Add this guy to the list of rappers I've never heard of. Lol I love this thread.
