Saw the movie on Saturday. It was good but nothing special. It's better than the 22% score although most critics are judging it based on comparisons to the original which I never saw.

It was entertaining and not overly environmental like I expected. It just didn't really have anything original or powerful to have this movie standout. Fairly predictable plot. I wouldn't see it again but I didn't feel as though I wasted my money on it either.

Could we classify this as NOT a RINGING ENDORSEMENT?

I was, but upon further reflection a Billy Jack remake just wouldn't work. I actually thought Born Losers was just as good.

That would be a fair assessment. I don't even know how to fully describe my feelings on the movie. I was never really bothered by anything in the movie and did enjoy it. But nothing stands out as being overly good either. I will say the army in this movie was beyond stupid. I'm not sure if they were going for comic relief or not.

War of the Worlds was a different movie but much better.

I was going to see this movie, but then I remembered there was really only one reason I was going to see it, so I stayed home and re-watched The Hot Spot and The Rocketeer instead.

Everything posted in this thread sounds like a 22% RT movie to me. Critics watch hundreds of movies a year and, if there isn't anything particularly good about a movie, it will get trashed worse than a bad movie that takes some notable risks.

There's no shame in liking a 22% movie. If 22% of them liked it, then there will be plenty of non-critics who actually paid for the movie who will enjoy it.

Please tell me you're talking about the Orson Welles War of the Worlds, and not the Tom Cruise version. THAT was truly awful.

Really? I thought it was pretty good myself; I liked it. Other than Cruise's irritating kids and the aliens being practically indestructible in their pods, I thought it captured the feeling of what might happen if Earth were invaded pretty well. As far as "global disaster movies" go, I rank the War of the Worlds remake as one of the better ones definitely.

Day the Earth Stood Still doesn't convey that same feeling; it's like there isn't enough shock/surprise that such a monumental event is occurring. And as Rudy pointed out, the military seemed borderline dumb and unnecessarily arrogant in the movie at times.

I don't know man. I tried watching it a little over a year ago, and I made it through, but barely. I had a really hard time staying interested for some reason. The original one is a lot more gripping IMO.

Still haven't seen the new DtESS, but with the reviews I'm reading, and what I've seen of it myself, I doubt I will see it unless my wife gets a cheap copy from work after it's released on DVD.

Re: The Day The Earth Stood Still

SLIGHT SPOILERS, but really this movie is so freaking obvious and predictable that if couldn't figure out the plot points I'm going to mention below then you would probably sleep through the first 15 minutes of the film.

This movie wasn't very good. It dragged the plot for an hour before finally settling into it's message, which by the way isn't really environmental. It does hold a bit of an environmental message, but the alien never actually mentions it.

It's more about humans being parasites to earth and destroying it because we're hateful creatures to both ourselves and the living things around us.

If you think the alien really destroys earth then you're going to be disappointed. I was really pulling for a sad ending. Instead it was more of the happy happy crap that you see in most of these science fiction films.

The terrible thing about it is that the message that was trying to be taught to us, isn't even the reason why the alien decides to save the humans. It's so backwards in this film. One minute it's "A decision has been made. We have to save one of the few planets capable of human life before you destroy it." And then, within 20-30 minutes, the alien sees people crying over other people and says "You have an other side. I'll see what I can do about saving you."

What? It's a ridiculous notion that was reminiscent of bad writing. It was clear that the writer had no direction or idea where he wanted to go with the story and when he effectively wrote himself into a hole, he comes up with some ridiculous crap that changes the alien's mind.

The alien clearly mentions that he's aware that humans have an other side. What, does he suddenly now choose to ignore that the side he and his culture/decision makers detested in humans is ok so long as some people are nice to each other? It's stupid. There's still going to be wars, killing, deaths, and the destruction of earth. There was no solution. The alien basically resolves to let humans continue destroying the planet.

This movie deserved the RT rating. Every single bit of it.

Saw it last night. Being an exact remake to the older version, it stood up to the test of time pretty well. I enjoyed it. And yes it did have its short comings. It seemed as if the last third of the movie went by too fast.
