The Day The Earth Stood Still
Okay...this constant re-making of classic movies needs to stop. NOW.

Re: The Day The Earth Stood Still
They have to keep re-making movies, there are very few original ideas anymore. Sometimes its for the better to remake movies (hello The Dark Knight) but they wont stop redoing movies until we stop seeing them.Check out my Tampa Bay Buccaneers CFM Thread.

Re: The Day The Earth Stood Still
I heard about this a while ago and hmmm It looks like a typical sci-fi/action movie. Looks like they ditched the far more resonant message of "stop making war and destroy nukes" that the original film had.
BLAH.
At least Keanu looks good for the part.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: The Day The Earth Stood Still
Well, in fairness, the original doesn't translate to today's generation very well. There isn't anything in it that is going to make a kid today stop channel surfing and tune into it. It comes off as nothing more than an elongated episode of the Outer Limits. Don't get me wrong, I love the classics, but if a remake can be done which is a tribute to the original then I guess it's okay.....for some classics anyway.Comment

Re: The Day The Earth Stood Still
That's not what I meant. I mean the style of the 50's; the dress, the talk, even the way they did cinematography.....doesn't translate as well.
I would bet even money that you sit a group of 14 y.o.'s down in front of that movie in a big room and tell them that if they can't get into it, they can get up and leave, more than half would.Comment

Re: The Day The Earth Stood Still
Well of course most would but that's not the point i'm making. The point i'm making is that this movie looks like your typical action/sci-fi crap with no real meaning to it. I'm fine with an intelligent remake but this just looks like they took the basic concept of a single alien that can destroy the world and left out the sociopolitical import of the alien's threat.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I'm a young'in and I like the original movie and am getting sick of seeing this remake crap. The remakes are never as good...ever...IMO.Comment

Re: The Day The Earth Stood Still
Personally I can't wait to see how they interpret the original. I wasn't even interested in the old version until one day I saw the trailer for the new version. When I watched the first one on Youtube, I immediately fell in love with it. It was a pure sci-fi classic just as The Fly,War of the Worlds,or any other. It seemed far ahead of it's time, the lead actor playing the role of the visitor Klaatu was very convincing as an alien. I think they could make the robot Gort in the newer version look more convincing as the older one looked a little silly.Comment

Re: The Day The Earth Stood Still
I could be wrong, but I got more of an environmental message vibe from the trailer than a nuclear destruction one...another reason to just stick with the original (not that I'm anti-envrionment -- far from it -- but it's been done so many times already)“In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Just got back from seeing this. Thought Reeves & Connor did very well in their roles. I would recommend it.PSN-Shugarooo

Re: The Day The Earth Stood Still
If I have to pay $8/$10 for some alien to tell me to use longer lasting flourescent light bulbs....... I may poke my eyes out right there as the credits roll!
thx
Spoilernm.... I got my answer over at IMDB. It's getting hammered there. And although people are not directly indicating a global warming theme, there is certainly inference and undertone that the message is there.... which is enough to keep me away.Last edited by daflyboys; 12-13-2008, 12:46 PM.Comment

Re: The Day The Earth Stood Still
I loved the original.
The message might seem a little hokey(especially nowadays), but it was a real concern back then on the heels of atomic power.
Plus...how foreshadowing it really was, huh?
Anyway....Michael Rennie was great as Klaatu......and I used to have such a crush on Patricia Neal.
