Re: What's the coolest American song?
I served a year in Iraq while that guy made money off of singing about serving, so, yeah, I think I get it.Back in the NCAA saddle after 17 years.Comment

Re: What's the coolest American song?
I served 23 years. My first combat tour was Grenada in 83 and my last was Iraq in 03 with many in between. To be honest I really don't care if an artist that sings a patriotic song served or not. Lee Greenwood's song made Americans want to support the troops doing Desert Storm. Toby Keith and some others have done the same thing doing our current conflicts. I thank them and anybody else that can accomplish that. I have more respect for them than some of the soldiers I've served with. Patriotic songs have never made me feel ashamed. I can't say the same about some of my fellow soldiers.NFL:Packers
MLB:Reds/Tigers
NHL:Red Wings
NCAA:Michigan Wolverines.
F-1: Ferrari.
It's been a while OS. Hope all are doing well!Comment

Re: What's the coolest American song?
I've never said I was ashamed of patriotic songs in general, but ones that talk about standing up and defending the nation from people who never have irk me. My issue with saying "if you've ever served, you'd understand" is that it follows the "veterans are all monolithic" line of thinking. I have served and I think the song is cheesy as hell. I also think it's sad that it took such a cheesy song to get Americans to support the soldiers during Desert Storm.
But that's your opinion and I respect it. Just as I respect your service. As you know I was a Ranger. 3/75 3rd Bn. You know what we say about regular Army troops? That **** is tame compared to NG and Reserve soldiers? IMO it's funny, but really unfair. You all served tours in combat zones just like us. Was it in a front line unit? Not so much, but you still could get killed any second. We are soldiers, period. Monolithic? No. But you guys will always be weekend warriors to us. Fair? Not at all. Now your saying "What the **** does this have to do with Lee Greenwood"?
Here goes, like I said before I don't care if anyone serves or not. It's been a personal choice for Americans since the draft ended. If singing a song inspires people to get behind our efforts, I am really cool with that.I look at it like they have done a service for this country. Bob Hope never served but I respect him as much as any soldier for all that he has done for us. Lee Greenwood did a service to us when he busted out with his song. It brought people pride to sing it together at ballparks and firework displays. Hell I was with 10th Mountain and 7th Marines 1st Marine Division in Afghanistan one night after winning a large firefight with the Taliban. Guess what we sung? Both ****ing battalions. It made us happy and we were pumped as hell.
On that note I'll leave this to a friendly agree to disagree. I stll love you brother!!NFL:Packers
MLB:Reds/Tigers
NHL:Red Wings
NCAA:Michigan Wolverines.

The Boss- Born to Run.
This song captured every teenagers dreams.
Fast cars, women, and lust.
We Will Rock You/We are the Champions- The song was written by British artists(Queen), but I still do a lot of fist pumping when I hear it on the radio in a car.
Ohio- Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young- Song written for the Kent State shootings. A song written at the right place and the right times.Comment
