A show's "die-hards" will stick with the show regardless. Heroes captured the average viewer in their first season because of an intriguing storyline, constant developments central to their characters and exciting action. Where has any of that been in Season 3?

I would argue that this storyline has been intriguing. The introduction of Mr. Petrelli, the background on Sylar and the Villains vs. Heroes element has been good in my mind. There has also been quite a bit of action imo.

As for the constant complaint about character development, what do you want the writers to do? You can't unring a bell. Season 1 had a ton of character development simply because you didn't know anybody. You can't replicate that anymore. After two seasons with these characters we already know a lot about them and therefore we get smaller doses of it.

That's exactly my point. The writers continually try. Sylar was evil, then good and I'm sure he's evil again. Peter has been good, evil, looks to be good again. They've done nothing with Nicky despite the fact she has a twin now and they obviously felt compelled to bring her back. Suresh has flip-flopped more than a pancake.

I'm laughing as I think about everything they've done. I could go on, but honestly... why would I? If you're enjoying it, great. But there's a reason why it continues to dip in the the amount of viewers it gets every week.

Where has any of that been in Season 3? We've had only 2 or 3 good episodes this season, IMO, where they've done just that. As Ridge mentioned, the entire story seems convoluted and full of holes. The casual viewers have jumped ship because of Season 2 and 3 hasn't provided any reason to get back into it. There's a secretary here who loved Season 1, hated Season 2 and keeps asking about 3. Why would I tell her to get back into it when the writing is a mess? We hardly are revealed anything about the characters and then as soon as this amazing revelation happens it quickly gets retracted.

We went from one great, multi-character driven story to a huge mess. They've even failed bringing in new heroes (or "villains").

It's just one big mess of a show right now. Such a shame.

Season 3 just started out bad. I have them all DVR'd, but I can't get myself to watch them. It started getting confusing for my wife and thats when it lost me as a viewer. We just weren't having fun watching it anymore.

My complaint about character development is lack of character growth.

It's possible that the future has ruined a lot in my mind. I'm supposed to believe that Hiro becomes this samurai in five years. Ok, so that future was destroyed, but by showing that you gave me reason to believe he is capable of doing so. Two years later and Hiro is still the same dimwit.

Peter is supposed to be this rouge, renegade, fugitive. Yet, with powers or not, he's still a cry baby that just gets agitated at every little thing.

Claire has grown. That storyline is the richest. It has always been. Claire and HRG can have their own show.

Sylar supposedly changes and they showed droplets of it (ie: saving Peter, allowing Elle to electrocute the crap out of him). But, Sylar is the best character on the show and there's no doubt that they've riden his coat tails through all three seasons.

That's just three characters and I'm sure if you asked many people those three characters are mostly everyone's favorite. The story seems to revolve around them at all times.

That goes into my next problem. The show is about other characters. You would think Peter and Hiro are important but they haven't thrown them a bone. The only thing they've done is master their powers. They haven't learned a thing about their own character. It's tedious, redundant plot.

Matt Parker is clearly in better control of his own powers and he's gotten some character development by way of Daphne, but his storyline has been about nothing more than trying to get Daphne to love him.

Matt just gets thrown around quite a lot in this show. He's like the guy that comes in because they have no one else that should be in a particular situation and once he discovers what's going on, they drop him.

If you're enjoying it, great. But there's a reason why it continues to dip in the the amount of viewers it gets every week.

I realize Heroes ratings have fallen but they have held steady around 7 million viewers for the last month or so. I'm glad I'm one of the few still loving it!

Part of the problem is that some characters have outlived their purpose. Claire was a central figure to the plot line of season 1 "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World" and yet she feels like a whiny annoyance at times. Suresh was a central character in the beginning but adds little now. Maybe they will drop a few characters/dead wood and add a few newer ones that are interesting down the road (unlike the mimic or Maya).

I guess I'm a loyal viewer (regrettably because I keep tuning in) but this is like trying to explain to someone how a video game is bad. If they can't see it, more power to them.

Surprisingly, Heroes had an upswing this week (and last) and even led in viewers 18-49 years old for the 9pm hour.

I agree with much of what you've said. The continuity and holes in the storyline are laughable...I compare all the flipping of characters to something you'd see on a daytime Soap Opera.

Unfortunately, Heroes will never be what it was in S1, but there are three other serial dramas that are very good to keep me entertained mentally (Fringe, Life on Mars, Lost), so I am now looking at Heroes as cheap, mindless entertainment for an hour a week (much like I did with Sarah Connor last year). I didn't hold it to a huge standard last night (like I had for the past 2.5 years) and I came away entertained.

Just because she's had some good development (and I'd say she's second, behind Sylar) doesn't mean she can't be a whiney annoyance. If she wasn't pleasing on the eyes, I'd absolutely hate her character because she is annoying as ****.

Surprisingly, I'm actually shocked to say that Terminator:TSCC has absolutely destroyed this show this season. Character development and a story that is intriguing, constantly evolving has worked wonders despite many people not tuning in.

I'd like Heroes to do well because the cast they have has proven they are really good. Season 1 is all you need to refer to. However, the writing and story direction are just plain bad at this point.

I keep hoping for a turn for the better similar to Lost's 2nd and 3rd season but everything so far isn't giving me any hope.

Agreed. Her development has been one of the best, but her character drives me crazy to point I hope they kill her off (along with whatever Ali Larter's character is called this season...as well as Suresh). I don't think Hayden is great to look at either.

Agreed, but they have to make that turn quickly if its going to last. The cost of $4 million/show is a huge chunk of change...especially in this economy where advertisers are hard to come by (which of course is the livelihood for network television). NBC won't let that linger for long.

Now that was an entertaining episode of Heroes.

Poor Elle. The only blonde on the show worth watching is now gone.

It's near total meltdown on about 5 other Heroes-related message boards (The ODI, TV Without Pity, SpoilerTV@Blogspot; E!'s Kristin dos Santos' Heroes Redux has 250+ messages alone, the vast majority of them variations on this eight-word sentence:

When Kristen Bell is gone, so am I.

And I'm with them. Killing Elle when they didn't have to (KB's got 5 movies in the pipeline for '09 and when her movie career finally calms down, she could've come back to the show) has been the final straw for a growing number of fans who are pretty much grasping at straws for reasons to even watch next Monday, let alone the midseason finale on the 15th. There's enough dead weight to kill off (D!ohinder, Flint, Knox, Any Remaining Ali Larter Character, etc) without doing it to Elle.

I agree. Seeing Elle go, especially after the wonderful Sylar-Elle arc that had been going on for the past 2-3 weeks was sad. I felt like Sylar killing Elle made that storyline a waste of time for the audience.

I feel like that's a regular theme of Season 3.

Any reasons given to why they killed off Elle? Is it definitely because Bell is looking to jump start her film career?

I think some of the other storylines are actually progressing pretty good - Claire's for example. Her character annoys the hell out of me, but with her finally realizing she's truly not invincible and inexperienced has balanced that out for me. I'm not sure what to think about Peter's storyline quite yet. The gun-fight sequence last night just felt weird to me for some reason and I didn't enjoy it until Nathan and the Haitian came back. I have no idea what is going on with Hiro or why and I'm hoping that gets resolved soon, in some form.

Although I've always thought Parkman's character was always lacking, I am kind of digging his and Daphne's storyline as its a good change of pace compared to the other heavy-handed ones.
