Are you sure? The first two, were nearly scene to scene identical from the book with very minor changes. Columbus added nothing, no interpretation and it upsets me that JK didn't get her choice of Terry Gilliam to direct.

I'm not trying to disprove you or even argue. Without going into specifics, after watching the movies, I was continually saying "That's different from the book." Though the movies are enjoyable, they are no where near the "magic" that the books produce. I think every person that has enjoyed the movies but not read the books should really treat themselves and read the books.

I'm not trying to argue, but you seriously are looking for a copy of the book in the movie which is nearly impossible. I found a list of changes from the first movie compared to the book and the changes are minimal and have little to no effect on the movie itself.

        • At the start of the novel, Professor McGonagall in her animagus form had been observing Vernon Dursley prior to her meeting with Dumbledore and Hagrid. While this scene was omitted from the film, it was referenced when McGonagall voiced her objections in leaving Harry in the Dursley's care.
        • In the book, Nicolas Flamel's name is spelt Nicolas. In the film, an "H" is added spelling it "Nicholas Flamel".
        • Harry states in the second movie that the snake at the zoo was a python. The snake at the zoo is said to be from Burma. In the novel, it is a boa constrictor from Brazil, not a python from Burma.
        • Hagrid tells Harry about the death of his parents on the island in the sea. However in the film, Harry asks about this at the Leaky Cauldron.
        • The character Peeves is omitted, although a scene was filmed for him, but ended up being cut, even being omitted from the deleted scenes.
        • In the book Harry first met Draco Malfoy in Diagon Alley while shopping and later learned who he was on the Hogwarts Express, where Harry chose not to befriend him after Draco insulted Ron Weasley. In the film, both these events occur at Hogwarts before the Sorting.
        • Sorting was done alphabetically in the novel, and out of order in the film. Also, only Hermione, Malfoy, Susan Bones, Ron and Harry are sorted in the film.
        • Harry learns that all Slytherins go bad from Hagrid in Diagon Alley. In the film, he learns it from Ron during the Sorting ceremony.
        • In the novel, when Harry buys his wand, Hagrid is with him. But in the movie, Hagrid is not present, having gone to buy Hedwig.
        • Hedwig's name is never mentioned. The same goes for Mrs. Norris
        • In the film, Harry, Ron and Hermione see Fluffy in the Forbidden Corridor after their escape from Filch and Mrs. Norris. In the book, Neville was also with them.
        • The scene where Malfoy challenged Harry to a duel, but had actually tricked him by tipping off Filch was omitted. Instead, Harry, Ron and Hermione accidentally go to the Forbidden Corridor.
        • In the book Percy Weasley is using glasses and in the film he does not use them.
        • When Harry and Hermione get detention, it is because they left the Invisibility Cloak in the Astronomy tower while sending Norbert to Charlie Weasley. In the film, they get detention because Draco Malfoy saw them in Hagrid's cabin past curfew. Ron is also with them in the film, and gets detention instead of Neville.
        • On the way to the Philosopher's Stone, each obstacle was created by a teacher. This is not so described in the film. Also, in the film Quirrel's and Snape's rooms are omitted.
        • In the novel, Harry, Hermione and Ron, each seized a broomstick and kicked off into the air to chase the Winged Keys, while in the film, only Harry flew with a broomstick. The same is for the PC game.
        • The Hufflepuff-Gryffindor Quidditch match, where Snape is the referee, is omitted in the film. Instead, Harry hears Snape talking to Quirrel when he is walking to the Mirror of Erised.
        • In the novel, Harry sees his parents and his grandparents in the Mirror of Erised, but this was changed in the movie to where Harry just sees his parents.
        • In the novel, Oliver Wood meets Harry after coming out of a Charms class. However, in the movie, Wood comes out of a Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson.
        • In the movie, when Harry, Ron, and Hermione fall into the Devil's Snare, Hermione and Harry escape by relaxing, and Hermione saves Ron by making a fire. But in the novel, there is no "relaxing" part, and Hermione saves both Harry and Ron.

The first book is much more detailed, and they changed a lot of stuff... It's not nearly as close as you seem to recall.

Not to mention - you just posted a fairly large list of changes which proves it's not verbatim, by the very definition of the word: "in the exact words : word for word"

          Still a great movie, though.

The changes were minor, not freaking huge like cutting out Dobby. The joke was Neville = Dobby. Everything Dobby was supposed to do, he was replaced with Neville.

Plus the changes I posted were basically someone arguing over the fact well he wore a blue shirt in that scene in the novel, but in the movie it was green so it is now a horrible representation of the original.

Which is the reason I said not verbatim...semantics.

Also, I can't ever remember saying I was looking for an exact copy of the book in the movie, would be rather impossible, but anyway, kind of a silly argument.

I wish someway the movies could have included Peeves. I always imagined him looking like the lab. henchman from Princess Bride.

Just saw this movie on IMAX and have two thoughts:

                              1) Extremely disappointed with the lack of 3D - only the first 10 or 15 minutes, and it wasn't even utilized that much anyways. Made IMAX almost pointless.

                              2) INSANELY disappointed at how they handled the ending. I thought the rest of the movie was fine, very good. But the ending .... freakin' sucked. Wish they didn't deviate from the book's ending. Bah ... left me with a really, really bitter feeling about this movie. BAH!
