Yup, that whole dimension of the movie was unnecessary and really threw off the whole film for me. I like these films to stay as close to canon as possible.

Well, those that disliked Superman Returns should be happy: the next Superman will be a reboot.

Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov has told The Wall Street Journal that the studio is going to be reintroducing Superman. We assume this will be similar to how Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk was a reboot of Ang Lee's Hulk. Here is what the article says:

Warner Bros. also put on hold plans for another movie starring multiple superheroes -- known as "Batman vs. Superman" -- after the $215 million "Superman Returns," which had disappointing box-office returns, didn't please executives. "'Superman' didn't quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to," says Mr. Robinov. "It didn't position the character the way he needed to be positioned." "Had 'Superman' worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009," he adds. "But now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all."

The article also talks about Warner Bros. adapting other DC properties over the new few years. "By 2011, Mr. Robinov plans for DC Comics to supply the material for up to two of the six to eight tent-pole films he hopes Warner Bros. will have in the pipeline by then," it says. Those projects will likely be about single characters at first, and will be darker much like The Dark Knight:

With "Batman vs. Superman" and "Justice League" stalled, Warner Bros. has quietly adopted Marvel's model of releasing a single film for each character, and then using those movies and their sequels to build up to a multicharacter film. "Along those lines, we have been developing every DC character that we own," Mr. Robinov says.

Like the recent Batman sequel -- which has become the highest-grossing film of the year thus far -- Mr. Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as "The Dark Knight." Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well.

The studio is set to announce its plans for future DC movies in the next month. For now, though, it is focused on releasing four comic-book films in the next three years, including a third Batman film, a new film reintroducing Superman, and two movies focusing on other DC Comics characters. Movies featuring Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman are all in active development.

Personally, I don't mind a reboot. There weren't many places they could go after Returns, although I did really enjoy SR. Oh well, lets see if they stick closer to the comics and go with some REAL villians for the Man of Steel.

I didn't mind Returns either, but I'm happy to hear about the reboot.

They don't need to make his movies as dark as TDK, but they need to show him being more believable than the emotionally unmovable object he was in years past.

What makes him Superman isn't his powers or his naivety, but rather that he uses his powers for good and that despite knowing the human race is flawed, he'll always give mankind the benefit of the doubt.

I like the idea of Lex being a powerful individual. Perhaps Secretary of Defense or even President.

And then they can show the conflicts of Superman trying to do what's right, but at times wanting to do what's best. It's in that struggle that separates a hero like Superman and Batman.
Batman will break a leg or go to extremes for the greater good, whereas Superman will always follow the letter of moral law.
That's what makes him the type of hero that he is.

Saying all of that, they need a great villian for Sups to fight.
Someone wrote a script (that was rejected for Returns) which I felt would have been a fantastic movie. Lex creates Metallo and at first has him do good deeds to gain the publics trust. But eventually he reveals himself as a tool to kill Supes and a great battle ensues.

In the end, Supes wins and Lex is smart enough not to be linked to Metallo. That's what makes him a great villian and adversary to Superman.

I dont mind a reboot if they keep true to the Superman myths but lets keep Routh as Superman and the John Williams Superman score. The music to me is as important as what the music is in Star Wars, when you hear it you instantley know the movie.

I still think there is a way to fix the Superman Returns problem and we get 4 or 5 movies out of this cast.

Do a sequal to Returns and sow up some loose ends have a huge battle that eveyone wants at the end of that movie.
Maybe the kid isnt really Supermans but somehow Brainiac. You could then end that movie with Darkseid preparing to take over Earth. Next movie the battle of all battles Superman VS Darkseid.

Next 2 movies your reboot (prequals) we see then how it all started and we can steer away from the Donner movies. Superman faces takes care of Lex in the first one . Next movie General Zod and his minions are released from the Phantom Zone, Zod enables Brainiac in his attempt to rule the Earth but Superman wins in an epic battle. Thats when we see Lex and his plan of sending Superman to Krypton. The movie ends with Superman leaving in his ship to go to Krypton and Lois is attacked by a weakend Brainiac he then uses her body to regenerate into the kid we see in Returns.

It might sound kind of messed up here but I have it in my head and it makes sense and could be a great series

Like has been mentioned, the whole Superman having a kid basically ruined Returns for me. Mankind has no hope if Superman can't stay true to his character.

If they are going to reboot Superman wouldnt be cool if they did a Batman Superman movie with Nolan at the helm, and use the movie poster from "I am Legend" that u see in the background? They would make 700 million easy at the theaters ( as long as the script is good )

I wouldn't mind a reboot IF they keep Routh as Superman and don't spend too much time on the origin stuff, we've seen that enough. I like the way that the Incredible Hulk handled the origins of Hulk by showing scenes in the opening credits. That's enough and it leaves more time for the actual story.

I agree with this. I'd hate to see Routh go just because a lot of people didn't like the first movie. I thought he did a very good job in Returns. His Clark Kent truly reminded me of a young Chris Reeve.

definitely, his Clark Kent was spot on. I thought his Superman was great too. To be Superman you have to have that part about you that shows you care for the other people in the world more than anything else, and even though you have all these superhuman powers, you can still be hurt by human emotions. All at the same time, you have to be able to face down the enemy and get the job done. Routh was able to portray that.

If they are going to reboot Superman wouldnt be cool if they did a Batman Superman movie with Nolan at the helm, and use the movie poster from "I am Legend" that u see in the background? They would make 700 million easy at the theaters ( as long as the script is good )

I heard an interview with Kevin J. Anderson (author) where he talked about how he was working on a project that brings Batman and Superman together during the 1950s. There was a whole Cold War vibe to it with Wayne Enterprises competing with LuthorCorp. and Luthor secretly selling to both sides. I'm not doing it justice, because Anderson sold the story really well.

As an aside, he also wrote a really good book called The Last Days of Krypton that I recommend if you're at all into Superman mythos.

That sounds really interesting and i'd love to see a live action movie try the old timey futuristic look of the old B:TAS series. I think it can be done quite well. Maybe even add a bit of a noir element to it as well.

BTW is that a book or a Graphic Novel? Either way i'll have to find it.
