Better than the 2nd Season barely, but slightly behind the 1st.

Only two really, really dumb things this season. Dude throwing uppercuts and wearing beaters after having half is back removed and Deb/Quinn not calling in backup/SWAT Team on a ridiculously great lead. Would never have happened with any decent cop.

yeah i agree with both of your things, but to me the most annoying is the fact that deb never calls for backup on anything, it's just so ******** that she's going in after all these murderers and psychos and never calls anyone. maybe being that dumb she does deserve whatever happens to her..

Any thoughts on the Season Finale? I kind of felt underwhelmed how they wrap up everthing. The Skinner scene was rushed, it would have been more suspensful if Dexter had more of a struggle. It just did not have much suspense like season 1 or 2 finale's.

Yeah, but face it- the Skinner was not the big kill this season-Miguel Prado was, and because of the extended character development of Prado IMO it was Dexter's greatest "lab kill", even if Prado didn't pose a great challenge head to head. Was the season finale made a little anticlimactic by M.Prado's exit in the next to last show? Possibly, but that next to last show gave us a great Dexter twist-the surprising death of Miguel Prado an episode early.
I liked the Skinner scene though. It was short and sweet and to the point that Dexter is indeed formidable, even with a broken hand. I think the show tried to create a little suspense by positioning Dexter to be found out by the cops to be more than a mild mannered forensic investigator by virtue of his death blow to Mr Skinner. Dropping Skinner in front of a running car to negate evidence of the neck injury was a little implausible, but that really didn't bother me.
The Dexter-Skinner confrontation aside there was so much about this finale to like, such as the surprise treatment of Oscar Prado (sometimes you don't have to kill a wounded animal, you just have to remove the thorn), which showed the very human, caring side of Dexter, the Deb-Lieutenant badge scene, and Angel coming clean about his indiscretions. It was a thoroughly enjoyable season finale.

Agreed. I thought the finale was great. I'm interested to see what storyline they come up with in Season 4. Obviously Dexter as a dad will be part of it, I would think, but I'm curious to see what the writers come up with as far as an enemy, of sorts. They've had the Ice Truck Killer, the Bay Harbor Butcher investigation, and Miguel Prado & the Skinner. By the way, I thought Jimmy Smits was excellent as Prado. Hope he gets consideration for some awards.

Again have to disagree. The finale was very anti climatic and both Prado's death and the Skinner's death seemed rushed. When did Dexter become a superhero because that's what it felt like when he was abducted because you knew he would get out of it quickly especially when the finale was already half finished. Breaking his hand by flipping the table to get untied is too far fetched even fo this show. Prado's brother has been crazy the whole season and all it took was some fatherly advice from Dex to make him happy.

This season was much weaker than the 1st two seasons. There was almost no suspense from beginning to end and the only time time there was any "Holy ****" moments was when Dexter was knocked out and put in the trunk and we all know what cheezy resolution that was. Try watching the 1st 2 seasons again and tell me there wasn't much more suspense and tension. The show has become too tame in that now Dexter doesn't seem to have a dark side and his urges don't seem to be much of a factor anymore. Remember the dark, psychotic Dexter when he was talking to the caged Doakes. Now he''s portrayed like what Bill Cosby would be like if he was a serial killer. He's lost his edge.

Too many sideplots that went nowhere. What was the point of that internal affairs chick harassing Deb if a 30 second explanation from Quinn is all it took to resolve it. How the hell does Deb get her badge with all the crap she pulls, she would have been demoted, not promoted, in any other police Dept.

Everything smacked of laziness by the writers to resolve things because they introduced way too many pointless story lines this season, just seemed to be filler to get thru the season. The Miguel Prado-Dex dynamic was done well but not much else and Rita has become unbearable to the point where you hope Dex makes her his next victim just to put us all out of our misery.

Apparently 2 head writers of the series left after the 2nd season and it shows. With this inane baby crap for next season it may be unbearable to watch.

Same thing happened to the Sopranos where they ran out of ideas after season 5 and we were subjected to Vito's homesexual habits and AJ's endless boring problems the last 2 seasons.

I gotta agree completely. I never watched the show before, but downloaded seasons 1 & 2 two weeks ago. Blew through those and loved it. I then caught up on season three in time to watch the finale and, though I couldn't put my finger on it. Something was different. I agree that the storylines seem to have run their course and that the writers have run out of ideas.

I think they might have blew it by doing the season 2 storyline too soon. That was final season material on whether Dex would get caught. They could of done something else to go along with the psycho girlfriend Lila and Doakes finding out storyline without introducing the FBI\Bay Harbour Butcher angle. Because it was done so well this season's domestication episodes really looked weak.

They had so many possibilites with Deb and Rita finding out and facing a crossroads with Dex if they had the Butcher\FBI angle saved for the last season to be used as the climax to the series but they got impatient I guess.

A lot of the suspense is shown to you prior to the situation, and you're really just waiting for the moment that Dexter solves his problem. Season One, you knew who the Ice Truck Killer was by the middle of the season. It was just about watching people interact with him and trying to figure out how they would avoid losing someone they love. In Season Two, Doakes was all over Dexter from the first episode. You were just waiting till he figured it out. Now in Season Three, Prado pretty much becomes a murderer in the middle of the season and the Skinner is revealed with 1/3 of the season to go.

There is no true suspense/thrills in Dexter. It's mostly just dark comedy and drama.

Not suspenseful? Did you absolutely know that Deb would NOT be killed in the first season? What about Angel's confrontation with Dex's brother in the first season? Was Lieutenant Maria guaranteed a Season 4, avoiding the brutality of Miguel Prado?
Speaking to the drag of Rita and domestication in Season 3, I think she has always been a slight drag on the show, and I'm curious how much the marriage affects Season 4.
Dark comedy??? It may be 15% dark comedy, so you can't really call it a dark comedy.....(IMO)

The 1st 2 seasons were drenched in suspense but it was show by show suspense which made every episode a must see. It was a master of showing cliffhangers at the end of the episode that made you say "I can't wait for next week" Like the kid in the trunk who saw Dexter kill someone at the auto wreckers yard or when Doakes discovered Dex's blood samples or when there was a camera posted by the FBI near Dex's boat and he didn't know it and was cleaning evidence or Lila discovering Doakes in the cage. The 1st show of season 2 when they found the bodies at the bottom of the ocean. You were already hyped for the whole season. Almost every episode left you hanging in a good way.

This season had none of that except when Dex was put in the trunk and they took the cheap way out the next show. The cliffhanger for this season's 1st show-Rita thinking she might be knocked up. Wow what tension and high drama. Can't wait until next week for that one.

This show lost it's edge and tried to do too many things with too many characters and then everything ends up rushed or unresolved. Remember the maniacal Dex being fascinated by the Ice Truck Killer's methods, now he's fascinated by whether Rita was married as a teenager. Booorrrrring. Dex is not normal, that what makes the show good. It's like the last few seasons of All in the Family or the Jeffersons. Archie Bunker and George Jefferson became so tame, non-abrasive and "good guys" it was painful to watch.

All I know is my wife is very easily entertained by shows and not nearly as critical as me and even she said " Is that it?" in reference to the demise of the Skinner and the last 20 minutes of the finale. The wedding and Deb's romance and ridiculous promotion became the focal point at the end. For me that confirms this season was pretty lame.

I agree with your points, but part of the reason is that a lot of these shows live season to season, not knowing whether they're going to be renewed. I'm hoping the writers use the fact that Dexter has been already picked up for Seasons 4 and 5 to craft a two-season-long endgame. Dexter is not a show that should be on the air for 8-10 years. End it, and end it with style.

I happen to laugh more often while watching Dexter than feel a sense of threat.

I worried for Debra, but I didn't think she would die. It was mostly thrills. LaGuerta? It didn't even come close. Maybe if Prado actually took her and threatened her. It was all hearsay, assumptions by Dexter.

Dexter is definitely more dark comedy than suspense. Suspense is when you don't know what's going to happen next. When there is a huge buildup to an unknown. I don't see that in this show. It's mostly thrown at you when you need it and then it's just a wait game.

On the other hand, you're watching this guy, an emotionless guy, go through life trying to understand why people are so different than him. His interactions with others, conversations with people, thoughts to himself, his behavior, all comedy. And all dark.
