That's a good thing...it's pretty damn tough to make a series a movie and vice versa. I think any series needs to be a bit more drama, but all that drama on the movie screen is tougher to do...You can have some action eps and some drama eps on tv, but I enjoyed the action. I do think that since they've established these characters and backgrounds they can do a bit more drama, but we'll see.

If you're like me & thought of this as a prequel, you'll be disappointed.
If you're still able to have an open mind, you'll still enjoy it.
As advertised, this is not your father's Star Trek. This is an action story, period. This isn't an examination of society w/action sprinkled in.-August 17, 1960Originally posted by VP Richard M. Re: Star Trek: The Movie
I 100% agree. The big screen is deserving of action and great movie moments. The small screen should be deserving of intellectual debate and ethical dilemnas. I was just stating that I hope that, based on this movie, the Star Trek mythos going forward does not become primarily action based. That would be a tragic development in my opinion. That's a good thing...it's pretty damn tough to make a series a movie and vice versa. Re: Star Trek: The Movie
You sound like what I just posted, albeit in a bit more extreme form. I agree with you that this is not true to the Star Trek heritage but surely you can see this is what is needed to reboot the franchise and keep it going forward? Not reading the whole thread cause I'm frikkin' lazy.

Re: Star Trek: The Movie
Came back from watching the movie, i enjoyed it a lot. What made it even better was that i never really got into the series. I think i watched some of the one that were on "UPN 9" with the lady who was the captain of the ship and the latest one which ended some time ago.
But this to me was a fresh take on the saga. The movie itself lacked a really good plot, but the characters made up for that. Seeing them come into some sort of maturity moved the movie along quite well. Definitely wouldn't mind a sequel with a better villain thoughComment

Re: Star Trek: The Movie
It depends on what they do hereafter. I'm sure they did this so that future movies will not have to adhere completely to the previous series/movies. Understandable. But if the changes are going on the same pathway as the Transformers/Hulk 2/X-Men 3 did, namely action & sfx only, w/o giving just due to Roddenberry's vision,....then no, I'm not in favor of it.
Star Trek didn't get the rabid loyal following because of space fantasy. It went beyond that because of its commentary on life, human behavior, social issues, mankind's history. Ignore that, & you are pandering to a generation w/the attention span of a housefly. You turn your back on the culture that made Star Trek what it is. That culture loved it because it allowed for discussion, serious discussion. Not just oooh's & aaah's.
I liken it to the Sim City franchise. SC grew a hardcore following. But when the Sims took off, EA wanted to make SC more like its spinoff. & they wanted to cater to new potential customers. So they came up w/SC Societies. The game bombed. The previous buyers rejected the game before it even got to the shelves.
I give the scriptwriters credit. They opened the way for new storytelling w/o completely alienating the fan base that made this a profitable brand. I think Trekkies, w/their initial reaction, are willing to give the next one a go. But if this is the same as before, Trekkies will rebel. & Hollywood has been shown before, Trekkies are not to be messed w/. They will not be ignored & they do affect the bottom line.-August 17, 1960Originally posted by VP Richard M. I chuckled.
Also, I forgot to mention the actor who played McCoy. I don't care which side of the fence you reside, you will love his performance. W/out hamming it up, w/o making it look like parody, he nailed "Bones".-August 17, 1960Originally posted by VP Richard M. Re: Star Trek: The Movie
I'll second this totally. Fantastic Movie. 1st day buy on BRI just got back from the Imax and WOW!!! This movie was phenomenal. As a trek fan (not a trekkie though as i'm not that hardcore) I was really apprehensive about this movie but it blew my expectations right out of the water. Just a fantastic, must-see movie for all sci-fi fans, Star Trek fans or not.

Re: Star Trek: The Movie
I haven't had that much fun in a movie in a long time. I'm going to re watch it on IMAX for sure, the sound was amazing, especially during battle scenes and when they went into warp speed. I did watch it on a cinna capri theatre so the sound was top notch.
I watched it with my buddy and his dad who was a fan of the first Star Trek series and he loved it and thought it was accurate but didn't like the Spock and Ahora (sp?) relationship. He told me that wasn't accurate.
Other than that, its a must see summer movie. I thought casting was great and non stop action. Are they planning more movies? I hope so.Comment

Re: Star Trek: The Movie
The Spock relationship wasn't supposed to be accurate, they made changes to his character.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment
