What surround system systems you guys currently have?

I'm looking to get a surround sound system and am looking to spend 200 to 300 on it. Any recommendations?

Do you have a PS3 or blu ray player? I'd suggest buying a receiver that has HDMI and can output the hidef audio. Then buy your speakers separately. Will probably cost more than $300 but you'll be better off.

FWIW, I used to have a RCA 5.1 HTIB from Walmart. Paid $198 for it. I would go with a Onkyo HTIB.

i have a 360. i was actually thinking about the HDMI part because my cable box i use HDMI. how would that connect to the speaker system? isnt hdmi both audio and video?

I've got a Technics Receiver but I might get a new one this Christmas. As for speakers, I've to 2 B&W bookshelf speakers and 2 B&W surround speakers.


If you're getting speakers and money is no object, go with Bower & Wilkins. They're the best in the biz.

I got it about five months ago for $564.99 at Best Buy, and it only came with the standard five speakers. They're great IMO, very sleek too.

I have an Onkyo 605 and a set of Infinity TSS 500 speakers. The audio quality on a Blu-Ray is incredible. Here are links to both:

I have an older Onkyo HDMI receiver...the SR 574. Pioneer surrounds and 10" JBL subwoofer. I think I want to go with floor standing speakers when I finally upgrade again.

HOWEVER,.....I got a nice television and free Blu-ray player with it because of the competitive price match between Best Buy and Circuit City. Wife is very clever. That surround sound is a beast. Plus you can add an extra two speakers to the back to make it a 7.1 joint. Very much worth every penny I spent.......

It's terrific, the only problem is it has nothing for component, just composite and HDMI (well, and some other things I think, but no component).

I ended up with a Yamaha HTIB setup...

I use the optical audio for all my sound inputs, and go HDMI to the TV directly for video on DVR and PS3. 360 I use the RGB hookup for video.

I'd like a receiver that does all HDMI, but they end up being pretty expensive (and I needed the entire HTIB set, so couldn't swing a 400 or 500 receiver.

MGO purchase the receiver in my post from eCost.com for $265 shipped and pickup the speakers I posted about on eBay for around $180 refurbished from the manufacturer. When you are done you'll have a 7.1 receiver that handles the HD Audio codecs and a decent set of speakers and sub for under $500. The speakers retail for about $500 from Ultimate Electronics. If I were to connect my PS3 to an Onkyo for sound, what cables would be necessary? Keep in my mind I would be using an HDMI cable for the video on the tv.

HDMI is used for sound as well (the same cable)

HDMI = High-Definition Multimedia Interface
