They might not care, but they still know what it is.

The older generations are far outnumbered by the lower generations.

Using the 2007 estimates by wikipedia, Star Wars wins.

According to those figures, 20-64 year olds make up 60% of the population. Now, 64 year olds wouldn't have existed when GwtW came out, but would have been roughly 34 when Star Wars came out. It's only logical to assume that Star Wars would be more identifiable in this age range, especially in the 20-50 range, but for fun, we'll call it even.

The big issue is the 65+ vs 0-19.

65+ make up 12.6% of the population. We can assume that the GwtW is known by 100% (as anyone not knowing GwtW but knowing Star Wars is unlikely). However, the 0-19 range makes up 27.4%, and we can assume the inverse (that 100% know Star Wars, and anyone not knowing Star Wars isn't going to know a 70 year old movie). Now, we can assume that say, 30% (very low guess, but just for fun) of old folk know Star Wars. Of the 40% up for grabs, that makes Star Wars known to 31.2. To make them equal, young'ns would have to recognize GwtW at almost 70%. Granted, this doesn't take into account the 20-45 demographic that would be unlikely to know anything more about GwtW than the name and maybe the setting, so Star Wars probably wins in a blowout.

Star Wars is the answer. It has a release span of 28 years. Less than 10% of the country's population was alive when GwtW came out. Anyone over the age of 10 has probably seen a Star Wars movie in theaters. The older generation is way over emphasized. They barely even exist anymore, and Star Wars has undoubtedly been the biggest pop culture phenomenon since it came out.

              Lord of the Rings
              Pirates of the Caribbean

All of these were gigantic box office hits. They are popular worldwide, which makes them some of the most well known.

Can't say you didn't do your homework, but also consider that although someone 64 or even 54 or 44 didn't exist when GWTW came out, it doesn't mean that it isn't well known. Which is the problem with the thread to begin with: a subjective measurer. The Wizard of Oz came out the same year as GWTW, but clearly is something "well known". So, it doesn't have as much to do with when it was released, but how well it's known..... as impossible as that is to measure.

I mean, the Bible is quite possibly the most "well known" book whether you believe in it or not. But, no one on earth now was alive when it came out!

                  Very well thought out...

I still have to go with "The Wizard of Oz", b/c I'm guessing most people in the world have seen this multiple times as children, and will continue to screen it for their children for generations past, present and future...

The charaters, storyline and dialog are universally referenced...

And you can play "Dark Side of the Moon" along with it, as well...

The big difference between The Wizard of Oz and GWTW is that The Wizard of Oz is still on TV multiple times a year (it was on two channels at the same time last night) while I have never seen GWTW on TV in my lifetime.

I think they play it once a year on TNT because my mom used to always watch it, but I still have never seen it.

The Sound of Music is another well-known movie.

GWTW used to be aired on Thanksgiving or thereabouts on the Turner Networks when Ted Turner had control. This was up til like the early '90s so it's not like it hasn't been on TV a lot. In fact it still shows up once in a great while on TCM.

Maybe the theme song....the movie, not so much. BTW it's one of the most boring movies i've ever seen. I like the sequel much more.

I think it's up there if you're talking about an individual movie.

The theme song is definitely famous as you said.

I didn't like 2010 as much. The 2001 movie wasn't great, but it is a classic, and had some good parts. I personally think that the books depict the story a lot better, though.

I'd definitely say it had the best special effects relative to it's time. The special effects look just as real as today as they did a phenomenal job of using models. They also were pretty darn realistic with everything and made it so that there was no sound since there is no sound in space, even though almost every movie I see how sounds in space, which drives me nuts!!!

2001's special effects blows 2010's special effects out of the water IMO.

Personally I think it is a movie that is not older than the 50's. Any older movies and most people that remember it are dead or a close to dying! I think the students a work with know Star wars and some know Wizard of Oz.
