Well, I tend to divide Hollywood into 2 groups:
1) OK actors, not ones that I'd consider as great ones, not the best of the best.
2) Great actors, the ones that can also do theatre, the best of the best.

On the first group I'd put Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore etc...and Will Smith. On the second group I'd put Robin Williams, Tom Hanks, Geoffrey Rush etc...and Denzel Washington.
At least that's the way I see it.

Right now - Denzel; he's also had way more experience, and been in far more films and had time to hone his craft.

Will Smith is a great actor who really has the chance to do some great things, but his movie career is still relatively new; and he's really just starting to get his stride.

He mostly just did action films, and he did quite well in them, but he didn't really have his first great roll until Ali (although, he's had other "serious" roles). And even then, he follows it up with what? Men is Black II, Bad Boys II, I Robot, and Hitch? It wasn't until Pursuit of Happyness that he took on a serious acting roll again; 5 years later.

To be honest, I don't think you can compare the two. One is a seasoned actor who's been through it all, and one is really just beginning his career; and one is an actor who has taken on a lot of different roles and really made some great characters - while the other is an action star to this point who has had a serious role here and there. Other than them being black actors, I don't even see a valid comparison at this point.

Agreed, my favs are Denzel and Tom Hanks.

It depends on the type of movie. I think more times than not that Denzel can pull off any role, where Will Smith (currently) is better suited for the comedy or blockbuster action flick. No slight to either one intended

Here's what I think... I think that Smith has a better range of talents and ways he can go with a movie (multi-dimensional), but I think Denzel Washington overall does a lot of things where he engages himself in the movie, like in ways that he talks to the director about how he should go about a scene or how a scene should be gone about. In other words, I think he has an impact on the final cut of a movie even if he's just the actor, and I think that's what the better actors do out there. If you're playing something like someone else wants you to, it doesn't let you bring out your best in a movie.

Plus, I like watching Denzel on screen... a lot.

Will Smith is, IMO, one of the most overrated actors...I'll go Denzel every time.

Wow maybe I'm in the minority but I see Will Smith as a far more versatile actor (Ali, I am Legend, Pursuit of Happyness, none of these are anything like his Bad Boys character), whereas Denzel to me plays a very similar role in all his big movies.

Will Smiths "blockbuster/action flicks" are GARBAGE! I feel like im in a grade 10 drama class, they get worse with age as well, independance day ok fine but I am Legend are u kidding me? sure effects were cool but the acting was gross, will smith needs to stick to two things comedy and drama, IE Bad Boys and Persuit of happyness. luckily that 7 pounds movie coming out is drama

It's not even close in my opinion. Washington is the far superior actor and I don't think Will Smith will ever be as good as him.

I'm sure Denzel has the most acting talent, but I enjoy Will Smith movies much more, that's why I like Smith more.

Denzel is the greatest actor of our generation.

My friend and I were talking about this the other day, and there are no seriously great Will Smith movies. There are some good ones, but nothing on the level as some of Denzel's.

I guess it depends on what exactly you mean by our generation (like what years these pertain to); but I'd have to disagree and say that that would be Morgan Freeman.
