Re: Oscars 2009
I just watched The Reader... Just so I'm clear, none of these comments are complimentary, but, I would say, I enjoyed the movie overall.
If it didn't have so much sex and nudity, it would be the kind of movie that they would show on the last day of high school in a history class. It occurs in the context of a compelling historical event in a, probably, over-simplified manner. Plus, it has a little side message regarding the importance of reading like some after-school special.
I swear, though...The only reason Winslet was nominated for this over Revolutionary Road is because:
SpoilerShe wears makeup to make herself look old for part of the movie.
Not really a spoiler, but some people are sensitive about that sort of thing...Comment

Re: Oscars 2009
Just saw The Wrestler... excellent flick. A lot deeper than I thought it going to be.
Rourke has a legitimate chance for Best Actor, it seems. Not so sure about Tomei for Actress in a Supporting Role.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? No one can seem to kill the right one.Comment

Re: Oscars 2009
I just got back from "The Reader"...Pretty disappointed. Kate Winslet is naked the whole first half of the movie, but overall I was pretty disappointed. Not worthy of a Best Picture nomination. "The Dark Knight" and "The Wrestler" were much better.
I'm going to be pissed if it wins. Ive seen 4 of the 5 now (all but Frost/Nixon)
My current order would go...
1. Slumdog Millionaire
2. Milk
3. Benjamin Button
4. The Reader
I will see "Frost/Nixon" for sure before the Oscars. Overall already last year's movies were WAY better for Best Picture.GT: Herkyalert

Re: Oscars 2009
Jackman was on broadway and that didnt hurt his career.
but thank God for Tivo so I can fast forward past the opening and the crappy commercials. Only NFL games have more commercials than the OscarsLast edited by ZB9; 02-22-2009, 10:35 PM.Comment

Re: Oscars 2009
Ok, Ben Stiller is hilarious and Natalie Portman is beautiful."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Glad I wasn't the only one wowed by her appearance."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied.
