Lol that's what i was thinking. Crystal Skull as an example? Really? I thought pretty much everyone said that movie was pretty poor.

I have no problem with people liking different movies but my question for Seymour is if you don't like avatar, what movies do you like?

He probably likes movies that don't copy one of the most boring, common plots in cinema.

Call me crazy - but I go to a movie to be entertained.

3 days later, I'm still hyped about seeing it and still thinking about it... That to me, is an awesome movie.

That's what entertainment is about. I've seen a lot of deep movies I forgot about a day after I saw them... That's not worth it to me.

Thank you sir. I like movies based on substance not style. I also apologize if some of you are offended that I didn't find the Hangover the best comedy of all time or considered Inglorious Basterds Tarantino's best movie. I found both slightly above average.

Why is everybody so offended I wasn't crazy about this movie. I specifically stated what problems I had with it. A paper thin plot, cardboard characters with very little development,(which is hard to do with an almost 3 hour movie). The CGI was not very convincing in regard to the aliens and human interaction, and very uneven pacing. I felt no connection with the final battle scenes, felt like Cameron just needed to finish it with alot of explosions and show how bad the humans were and made them look like they were barbarians from the 12th century because there was no time invested in showing the humans motivations in a more realistic way rather then just implying "humans bad, navii(sp) good" . The more I think about it the more silly and shallow I found this movie but since it was dressed up with a really nice bow I guess I'm expected to disregard all those shortcomings.

It's not like i came in here and said "I hated this movie" and that's it. The funny part is most people here who state the movie the GOAT but don't really say why except saying the effects were awesome. Well the effects were awesome for Speed Racer too. Would you love this movie in 2D nearly as much, I bet you don't so what does that tell you about the merits of the movie on story alone. It's like when someone said early in the thread, it was like watching Ferngully in 3D.

It's just sad movies have become CGI whorefests at the expense of telling a coherent story and character development. Maybe that's why I found 2009 a terrible year for movies. I still loved CGI heavy movies like Star Trek because they didn't use CGI as a crutch to mask laziness in story telling. But those kind of movies are few and far between these days. Now that Cameron has opened the floodgates with this 3D "craze" the movies will just get worse but at least they will look pretty and that's what seems to matter these days.

Because you ended your post by saying "go ahead and attack me, 'cause I know you're all babies".

Instead of just giving your opinion, you egged people on as well.

I don't know if it's a question of substance versus style so much as it is people having different definitions of substance.

I prefer movies that emphasize plot and humor; therefore, I'm not particularly interested in seeing this film.

I think not seeing this in 3D gives you a different perspective. If you're not oooohing and ahhhing the whole movie and actually watching it like any other movie, you're under whelmed. I was at least.

Over time as the technology seems less and less fantastic I think more will look back at this movie and have a much different opinion of it.

Have you noticed anyone who attacked me. They don't offer constructive criticism on why I was wrong. Kinda tells you right there the merits of this movie are not the strongest besides the eye candy.

                    And who cares?

You like story, others like eye candy. What makes your preference better than anyone else?

I find it interesting that there are some people really adamant about not liking this movie, or outright refusing to see it. I have a friend that's heavy into movies but absolutely refuses to see it in a theater, let alone see it in 3D. And the reasons he gave are the story not being original enough ("I've already seen Dances With Wolves"), 3D tickets being "too expensive", and refusing to believe the movie offers much in the way of a new experience. This from the same person that hates Michael Bay and knew Transformers 2 would be a joke, but was curious to see how Devestator was implemented. I think in a way there's some backlash against Avatar because so many people feel it's a great movie/new experience and it's success
HBO's "The Wire" should rank as one of the top 10 shows EVER on tv - period

Why would you not see a movie in its intended format though? It's like going to a strip club where the girls don't get all the way naked. Yes it's still good but you know it could be a lot better.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)
