I consider myself a Bond fanatic, and that's some damn good dialogue gentlemen.

I agree more with Fresh. I didn't like Quantum at the movies. The plot didn't stick with me, and the action was so chaotic that it was tough to digest on the big screen. At home, I loved it, even more the 3rd time than the second viewing. It's deep, and tied incredibly well to CR. And while I like CR better, I still love the direction and can't wait to learn more about Quantum in the next one.

Admittedly I haven't looked recently, but the last stuff I heard said it was delayed inevitably over debates about whether or not to shoot in 3D or something like that.

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

Fresh, you make very good points and I should append to CWood2's point about liking the movie more at home. I saw it twice in theaters (midnight showing; the weekend after with my sister and her fiancé) and both times I think the theater itself inhibited my ability to enjoy it. The sound was overpowering and those quick cuts really did annoy me. I said the same about Iron Man 2 and this feels to be the case for almost any movie I watch at home.

So as I see it: QoS is a revenge story. If you thought Bond was cocky before, you haven't seen anything yet. He will do anything for revenge. And now that he has made peace with Vesper and himself, his cockiness and recklessness is over. We will now see the Bond we knew before: cool, calm, and collected!

That's indeed a beautiful thing that came out of Quantum of Solace, though that's not how you would rate a movie in general, saying that "Well, it leads up to this and that." And again, it's not just that side of him that didn't feel like him. Where was, "The name's Bond, James Bond"? He didn't even get to name off his own drink, he had the bartender say it. There were just small things that, I think with more dialogue in between the action scenes (not material, there was plenty of that), ironing out the movie to at least two hours would have been the best thing this movie could have done if they had to keep the same directing.

As for the time thing, a movie only needs to be as long as the amount of material that is presented in the movie. I think there was too much material for what, 107 minutes right? This is of course always opinion-based as you thought the tight pacing worked well for the movie, but I think I was thinking too much of CR when having QoS in mind. I'll have to admit, I've watched them back-to-back before and again I just don't see the "flow" being very consistent. I think it starts with the color tone changing, but everything really does change. Yes, the story works okay as well as Bond's emotions. I do think Forster fudged up though. And hell, we brought up Christopher Nolan... he might be too serious and not action-oriented enough to do a Bond film, but if he was tied into the screenplay at all along with directing the piece, you know I'd be seeing that day one.

I guess the last thing I would say I where I preferred CR over QoS would be the villain, and I think everyone can agree with this one. Le Chiffre was too bad-***, and Greene doesn't hold a lick to him. The girl is a toss-up as far as majority opinion, but again I would go with Vesper.

You made valid points though, many that I can't dispute in that there are opinions when there are opinions. I'm thrilled you love the movie and I can't wait for the third Bond. Hopefully it completes a Craig trilogy.

EDIT: Well according to your link it appears Mendez is helming the project. I don't know any of his work off the top of my head, but I do hope in all honesty that it's closer to Campbell's style. That might just be me though.

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

I just watched a pretty damn good Film Noir movie from 1947 called The Devil Thumbs A Ride (BTW that's gotta be one of the best movie titles ever!) It stars Lawrence Tierney who was famous for movies of that type in the '40s and '50s. This movie ratchets up the tension pretty well and it's surprisingly violent (most implied) for the era.

The movie takes the edge off some of the more serious and irksome moments with some levity with a B-plot of the gas station attendant following one of the police detectives. Nonetheless it was well crafted and there are some real characters in this. In a way it feels like something Quentin Tarrantino would do if he were around back then.

                Highly recommended! (4 stars)

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1

The villain really? I thought the unveiling of Quantum was far more sinister, all-powerful, and threatening (by far) than Le Chifre. Le Chifre seemed to be a bigger player than he actually turned out to be and in the scheme of the whole movie, he was essentially small-time.

And again, there is a definite shift and change of tone and pace in Casino Royale. It is obviously not as major as from CR to QoS, but there is an obvious transition from one half of the movie to the other. I mean, Vesper's not in the first hour and she's probably the second or third best (and most important) character in CR.

Also, QoS is just a different movie. I don't think you can equally compare the pacing and tone in CR to QoS and and it seems silly to me to fault QoS because it isn't CR. That's just not fair. Look at other sequels and trilogies and see how many times tones, atmosphere, pacing, etc change from one movie to the next. I think the change from A New Hope to Empire Strikes Back is pretty massive.

Oh I know he's small-time, I just thought he was a better character. Maybe it was the actor or the several more interactions with Bond, I don't know.

Mendes directed American Beauty, Jarhead, Road to Perdition, Revolutionary Road, and others. He's definitely a drama guy.

So was Forster before Quantum of Solace.

I strangely haven't seen any of those movies, three of which I have been dying to see lately. I'll definitely check these out before the third Bond. 2012 should be a good year for movies.

Black Swan. My wife and I enjoyed it. It's a very good movie that shows the price of perfection.

The A-Team: It was decent, some cool action scenes. I loved the helicopter scene in the beginning of the movie and the last scene in the movie was awesome. It was a good mindless action flick.

Easy A. Started out slow, but it started to catch it's stride. Would be a good date movie. A more grown up "Mean Girls" chick flick. And Emma Stone is pretty darn cute.

Wrong Side of Town. Bad plot and terrible acting. RVD tried his best but this was bad from start to finish and the action scenes were not much better. Completely forgettable movie. Can't even recommend this as a $1 kiosk rental.
