Lakeview Terrace
I really didn't know what this story was about even when I read the back of the cover. I mean I know what the small idea of it was supposed to be, but honestly I didn't know what the point of making a movie on this plot was. After having seen it, the movie was very all over the place with wanting to achieve its goal, sometimes in good ways and sometimes not so much.
It was definitely one of those "get mad at the characters" kind of movies though like The Mist, which is always good when a movie can captivate you like that. Yes, some nerves definitely hit when I just wanted to yell at the screen... not at some character's stupidity in a "Don't go in there!" kind of way, just in ways that I would want to yell at somebody if something really happened to me.
But back to my main point, I just didn't really see a movie unfold from this, so what I noticed were strange oscillating character developments, from seeing them in a good light to viewing them negatively, and back again. I think this was the point, that you weren't supposed to know who is considered protagonist and antagonist. You don't even strictly follow one side of the fence (no pun intended), so technically every adversary is considered a main character. So to say this kept me on my toes would actually definitely be an understatement. I put this in at 1:00 AM it easily kept me wide awake all the way through.
The shooting location of this movie was fantastic and they made reasonable use of it as well, incorporating it into the story in more than one way. I was actually able to connect to them well based on some of their stories (and familiar locations or what have you), so that was pretty cool.
I don't know how this movie was critically received, but it's something that would be tough to watch too many times. Again, it's just so very jumpy that you'd almost consider it unnecessary watching those parts over again. And there was a somewhat small question in the end that I was sure they were going to answer but they never got around to doing, although I'm sure you could drum up a logical conclusion on your own.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend this movie, but it was nice to see SLJ in a lead role again because I normally just see him make smaller appearances in movies now just for his name. But he was really intrigued by this script and wanted to make this character be heard during a theater run I'm sure.
