      Finally watched The Town.

Great movie, but had the potential to be even better.

I felt the same way. I liked it, but there was just something missing for me. Not a bad movie. Just can't put my finger on what didn't make it great to me.

Watched Four Rooms last night. Netflix says it was directed by Quentin Tarantino, but really it's four stories directed by Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Allison Anders and Alexandre Rockwell.

I liked it. It was quirky. I think Robert Rodriguez's story was the best of the four.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

          Bulletproof.

It's an older movie, but still a good flick.

I liked some of the scenes in the extended edition (with the exception of two, which totally kill my ability to watch it and be serious about it), and it helped expand the relationship between Doug and Claire. I think the biggest problem with The Town was, unfortunately, in the name itself. Ben Affleck really does what he has to so that he restricts himself into Boston territory and atmosphere. It doesn't allow for much diversity, but I think that without it the film also loses its touch (and the point, for that matter). I just don't think that it can be great while every time you see Affleck's character, he's wearing a Red Sox or Penguins jacket. Throwing a bit too much homage to the city in his past two films.

The other thing was that, truth be told, it wasn't anything special in terms of story. In fact, the way that I see it, the thing that made this film stand out is that it actually did what most generic actiony films should be like (those 90s/early 2000 film that you see air on TNT every couple of months, etc). I think this was just the first film that did it right in a way, and I'm surprised that most of them don't get it right. Great execution for what they had to work with IMO.

I'm going to have to watch this for the name alone.

I liked Bulletproof as well, probably both Sandlers and Wayan's best movie.

I think I laughed more in the first 15 minutes than I do most comedy movies as a whole. Wasn't as many laughs for the last 1/3 or maybe 1/4 and it seemed like Rogen wasn't quite on the level of Pegg & Frost but good stuff overall.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

This morning I watched a pretty good Vincent Price movie on TCM On Demand called Diary of a madman (1963)

                                Here's the summary:

Simon Cordier is a well-respected magistrate who visits a condemned prisoner, Louis Girot, just before the man's execution. Girot again pleads his innocence insisting that he has been taken over by a spirit that forced him to commit his crimes. Cordier doesn't believe him and the man suddenly dies. Cordier does however note a rapid change in his personality during their short interview. In the following days, Cordier must face a number of strange occurrences in his home. He begins to wonder if he is sleepwalking but is soon hearing voices and begins to wonder about his sanity. It's recommended to him that he take up sculpting, something he once had an interest in. He develops a relationship with Odette, a gold digger married to a struggling artist, but the evil, invisible spirit soon drives him to murder.
This is more or less accurate, Price plays Cordier and does a wonderful job os showing how a once respected judge who has a keen interest in the criminal mind has been suddenly corrupted by the evil spirit of Horla. The only really sore point of the film is that the spirit's possession should've been less obvious but nonetheless the movie moves along quite nicely.

The gold digging and vain Odette is played by the very sexy (and unknown to me) Nancy Kovack. The scene where she meets Price as he's looking at a painting of her is one of mutual flirtation and seduction. I never really thought of Vincent Price as a charmer but he really dialed it up in that scene. The evil spirit Horla tortures Price's mind and forces him to break up Odette's marriage with Paul only to see him kill her in the end.

The last 20 or so minutes of the film is quite tense and while it's not an overly scary movie there's some disturbing elements to it (though tame by today's standards) that keep the viewer hooked. I had not heard of this Price film before but it's one that fans of his should seek out.
