I just finished watching The Grey and I'm kind of torn on the movie. I liked it a decent amount, but it wasn't half as good as I was expecting it to be. I just found myself a little underwhelmed overall. Not a horrible flick, but certainly not great. It has its moments.

Felt the same way. Liam Neeson's Mr. Know It All character was a little too much to take at times.

Just watched Avatar: The Last Airbender -- not sure why but I loved that movie so much I'm now watching the cartoon to get all the details, lol.

Anybody know if part 2 is coming out?

I watched an interesting old Cavalry/Indian Western last night unfortunately this movie served as a quasi prequel to another one I had planned to watch so no details except to say that Battle At Apache Pass is a very good and sympathetic to the Native Americans film. Jeff Chandler who played Cochise was damn good.

Anyways like I said i'll have to watch the next flick and then i'll compare and contrast. The next film was actually filmed earlier but depicts events later on in Cochise's life. The film is called Broken Arrow and stars James Stewart. I'll give full details later in the week, probably the weekend.

The Avengers is worth checking out. I'm not a comic book guy, but I enjoyed it a lot.

                        Chronicle
This was pretty badass. Sadly a bit predictable but otherwise fun and intresting. Kinda had a Magneto/Prof. X thing going on.

I watched Chronicle last night and I really enjoyed it. The journey from them first experimenting with their powers to things spiraling out of control was a cool ride. There were a lot of awesome scenes throughout the movie. I'd watch it again.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Okay so I saw both films.

I have to say that The Battle at Apache Pass (1952) only suffers in comparison to Broken Arrow (1950) because of the more limited budget and no real big star compared to the 20th Century Fox production of the latter film. The constants in both films of course was Jeff Chandler who played Cochise. He had more of a meatier role in Apache Pass but even in more of a limited role in Broken Arrow he came off as a dignified man who was a wise and reasonable leader of his people.

Apache Pass had more of a traditional format to it but Broken Arrow was almost poetic in its depiction of James Stewart as Tom Jeffords, the Indian Scout who's tired of all the fighting and seeks to broker a peace between the White Man and Cochise's tribe. There was a lot going on in this movie even though it flowed in a leisurely pace. One subplot was one of the towns people played by veteran western actor Will Geer who absolutely hates the natives and see them as one monolithic group despite Stewart brokering a peace where Cochise's tribe would allow the mail runner to go through without being harmed for five days. It was Geronimo's tribe that was causing the problems etc etc.

Another part of this movie was the love story between Stewart's Jeffords character and a young girl in the tribe by the name of Sonseeahray. They both fall in love and the cultural exchange as well as the blossoming relationship was something to see. I loved how the movie showed (ostensibly) an authentic wedding ceremony by the tribe as Jeffords and Sonseeahray marry. Their fate however is not to be a happy one. (and that's all i'll say about that) This movie was elegaic and poetic as it truly showed the "bad old Indians" as a proud people who only want to live their lives in peace but will fight for their freedom as well.

If you're interested at all I highly recommend getting Broken Arrow. It can be found used at Amazon so i'm sure you can find a copy that way or somewhere else easily enough.

I did watch another Apache related western late last night as well. It was the last film produced by the legendary Val Lewton called Apache Drums (2951) The characters are somewhat interesting and I liked the way the relationship between the gambler who got thrown out of town and the preacher is handled but other than that the story meanders and halfway through the film i'm already thinking of what else to do. This was very cheaply done but they mask it pretty well except in the climactic scene where the Apache's jump through the adobe church windows where the towns people are holed up in and attack. That part was fairly laughable.

This is a forgettable and pretty boring movie but if you're interested in seeing Val Lewton producing a western than I guess it's worth at least a look.
