Re: What movies have you seen recently?
So I've never seen the Alien movies before. Started watching earlier this week. Loved Alien, Aliens, and even liked Alien 3. Then I pop in Alien: Resurrection to finish the series. About halfway through, my PS3 shuts off by itself. Tried to turn it back on, got the message saying I didn't shut it off correctly, then boom ... shuts off again. Now everytime I go to turn the PS3 on, I get the yellow light of death. So essentially, Alien: Resurrection killed my PS3. I now hate that movie.Comment

Don't know yet. I really don't want to have to buy a new one. I might try to see if I can do one of the fix it yourself options. I've got nothing to lose by trying it since I'm out of warranty anyways. Luckily I can afford to be patient for now, because there aren't any PS3 games coming out anytime soon that I want.
I was actually kind of enjoying it, interestingly enough.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Over the last couple of days I watched Source Code and Iron Man 2. I really liked Source Code. It was a cool idea, although it was Quantum Leap for the most part (which isn't bad at all - great show) and I thought Jake Gyllenhaal was great in his role. I liked Iron Man 2 as well. The first one seemed a little better to me though. I can't say I liked Mickey Rourke as Whiplash. He did alright but, I know this sounds weird, I didn't like looking at him. It's one thing to wear a mask and whatnot for a role but his face has had WAY too much plastic surgery. I remember thinking that while watching The Wrestler.MLB: Cincinnati Reds

Man on a Ledge. Pretty good. Ending was predictable though.
Abduction. Bourne Identity for teenagers. Decent acting and action scenes. Not bad.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Speaking of old movies i'm still on my Westerns bender and so I watched 1949's The Gal Who Took the West. This was a comedy western and one that was okayish but what made it interesting to me was the Rashomon style storytelling as the film opens with a newspaper reporter wanting to do a story on the famous O'Hara family of Arizona. The newspaper man meets up with two old timers who tell the story of how one woman saved the territory between two feuding cousins. Each old timer had a different view of the woman with one thinking she was delicate and innocent, the other saying she was completely plastered and the third calling her a money crazy woman.
Other than that quirk it was pretty pedestrian in some ways but the lead actress Yvonne De Carlo (of The Munsters fame) was very good in her role as the woman in the mens lives. she did very well switching personalities to fit the different stories yet giving a coherent and confident performance. Charles Coburn who played the boys elderly uncle and general in charge of the territory was fantastic as well with some well timed comedic words and actions.
In fact this movie has given me a saying that I will now have in the back of my mind from now on: "hope for the best, expect the worst and take whatever in between." So despite the movie being a bit blah the actors lift the material and the Rashomon story device definitely served it well.
I give this about 2 stars, a little on the slow side as there's not much action.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
