Cowboys & Aliens (Expanded Cut) (2011)
I didn't quite know what to expect when I watched this but boy did I end up liking this movie A LOT. There is actually quite a bit of story packed into this and the growth of the characters is really neat to see. I thought Harrison Ford was excellent. I've never seen him being such a crusty, bad type of character who basically treated everyone like dirt but as the movie went along due to circumstances and such you see a softer side to him to the point that while I wouldn't say he's become a good man, he's at least learned to be better person.
The relationship between the Doc and Meacham characters was also explored quite well. I thought Clancy Brown was great in the role.
There's the whole subplot with Ford's character and an Indian that he has in his employ who he basically holds with disdain but throughout the movie you see that he becomes more respectful of the younger man to the point that there's a bit of a cliched ending to the story arc between them but it's a very nice pay off.
Daniel Craig was pretty good in his role though interestingly enough I was more interested in the stories surrounding the other characters. That's not to say what happens with him isn't interesting but I found the others had more to give from an emotional standpoint. In a lot of ways Craig channels a sort of "man with no name" kind of feeling to his character and the whole mystery to his connection with the aliens is one worth exploring but again there was no real emotional depth to the character and it comes off a bit cold.
As for the aliens? I thought it was wise how they didn't really show them too much in the first part of the movie as it built the tension for the full reveal. I like the reference to the annunaki with their raison d'etre.
All in all I found this to be a fantastic movie. I did find that it took it's time getting into a rhythm but by the time the aliens first show up the movie finds its footing.
3 stars.
