Okay, I actually did watch Casino Royale, and honestly I'll probably have to watch it again cause I didnt give it my full attention. Nonetheless pending the re-watch, this movie confirmed my theory that the Bond series is very meh.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I like the old ones (or did anyway, haven't seen them in years), possibly because I grew up watching them all the time with my parents, but I'm not a big fan of the new ones. Last one I saw in a theater was Casino Royale, and I didn't enjoy it very much.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Casino Royale was very good but to me, it's not the perfect encapsulation of the Bond series at all. It's indicative of the Craig films and quite good but if you're going for the totality of what makes Bond work i'd go with The Spy Who Loved Me. It had some of the campiness that pervaded the Bond series in the '70s but it had a meatier story. The gadgets were pretty cool for the time and the villains were pretty good. It also has THE Bond theme to end all Bond themes IMO as well.
Goldeneye is another (more recent) summation of the Bond films and is the best of the Brosnan films IMO.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The Thompsons
Varying degrees of amazing and lawd awful throughout. The ending is one of the worst I've ever seen bringing the whole thing down to below average.
SpoilerI have no idea how the sister got out and the main girl going with the guy is plain idiotic considering he was the reason her ENTIRE FAMILY JUST GOT MURDERED. "Oh hay,I'm responsible for having your family you've known your whole life killed. We just met like 3 days ago and that's all you really know about me so wanna be my gf now?" "Sure,I'll go with you and what's left of your vampire family that my vampire family killed and I helped to kill, including almost having you killed twice though I'm not actually a vampire." Really? REALLY? REALLY?

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
*I recommend not viewing spoilers and watching film first. Available now on HBO GO, free app on xbox live; viewing spoilered material will not reveal any plot details, but rather something that makes the movie even more interesting if you don't already know about it*
Just got done watching Prometheus (2012) a short while ago. Really enjoyed it. The visual effects were stunning, and the concepts the movie plays around with are fascinating, at least to me. I suppose they can be interpreted differently depending on how you view it. Great performances put in by a number of the cast, including Michael Fassbender who really does a fantastic job. The heroine, Noomi Rapace, is also very convincing. Idris Elba was another favorite for me, playing the captain, and Charlize Theron plays her role nicely as well. I thought there were a lot of cool dynamics at play with this one.
SpoilerAnother interesting aspect is the movie's relation to the *spoilered* material below. It's more of a parallel sort of connection, as Prometheus follows a different purpose and story than the hit film which it is a "prequel" to. You get the suspicion of the relation midway through, but by the end it becomes quite certain the connection.
The ending is also left open in a way that allows for a sequel, and though not entirely necessary(if you like something left to the imagination), I have read that there is one in the works, and could furtherSpoilerconnect the film it prequelsSpoilerIt's fascinating the way Ridley Scott decides to film a "prequel" in a very nontraditional sense that tells a story of its own, not really connected that much to the movie it prequels. I look forward to hearing more about the sequel to Prometheus.
SpoilerIf you read up, you can easily find what film this is a "prequel", so to speak, to. But here it is in spoilers just in case.
SpoilerAlien (1979)
SpoilerIt's really more of a prequel to a prequel lol. And yes, i just said prequel that many times and spoilered all of that.Last edited by Bmore Irish; 04-12-2013, 01:20 AM.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Well I needed some light entertainment so went to the ol' wayback machine. Unfortunately both movies were rather on the melodramatic side....oops
Shopworn (1932)
Plot Summary
A poor but honest and hardworking waitress from way across the tracks meets and falls in love with a college student from the upper-stuffy class, but the Mama of the intended objects to the romance. Her objections even lead her to having the waitress framed and sent to a prison work-farm for three months. Upon her release, the waitress finds instant stardom in the show business...and the social class she was lacking. Big Mama withdraws her objections
Said guy is a young medical student played by Regis Toomey, he had a sort of early Glenn Ford thing going for him with his looks though definitely NOT his demeanor. He had an ebullient and warm presence to him though I had to shake my head at the hoary old film shorthand of having him calling Stanwyck out for flirting with her customers to the point that she's leading them on and he basically calls a spade a spade with her being a tease. They get into an argument and he leaves the diner only to forget his hat and the next scene we see the both of them totally in love with each other, SHEESH!
The main conflict in the story comes from David's (the medical student) mother who has a wonky heart but foremost is one of those mothers that clings way TOO much onto her son to the point that she virtually controls his life. I do like that there's a not so hidden context of her having a psychological problem with her need to control her son like that. It's one of those things that would never pass through the Hays code post '34.
The acting by these three is superb and makes the rather standard story seem a lot fresher. The story takes place over 6 years and I like how (and i'm not sure it was intentional) early in the movie the lack of sound punctuated by quiet but strong dialogue builds its way up to a movie that has plenty of sound by the end. Remember, this was still in an era where the musical score/soundtrack was non-existent. I found this build up of sound to be interesting.
So let me address the bit of inaccuracy in the plot summary above which I will put in spoiler tags in case anyone seeks out the DVD or if they happen to run across it on TCM one day.
SpoilerThe mother only sees the error of her ways after pointing a gun at Stanwyck and contemplating murder-suicide then Stanwyck sees she can't do that to David and hides the mother and tells David's off only to have the mother come out and call herself foolish and selfish. So yeah, the mother is a bit loco.
3 out of 4 stars
The Midnight Lady (1932)
Plot Summary
An interfering mother-in-law forces Nita St. George to leave her husband and child. Years later, Nita runs a successful speakeasy, and her children believe she is dead. Her daughter Jean Austin dates artist Byron Crosby, and although Jean's father and grandmother strongly disapprove, she meets him one night at Nita's speakeasy. Nita has waiter Herman listen in on the conversation, aware that Byron is a notorious lady's man. When she hears that they have left for his apartment, Nita follows them. That night, Byron's jealous lover Mona kills him and frames Jean for the murder. Nita meets Jean leaving the apartment and, taking the blame for the murder herself, is jailed. After Nita's sentencing, Jean confesses to her lawyer boyfriend, and the district attorney entraps Mona into confessing. Nita is then released and returns to her club, while Jean returns to her boyfriend, still unaware of Nita's true identity.
I give this about 2 stars as it felt a bit stagy and the acting was a bit uneven.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Antiviral
Kinda like Contagion if something actually happend and it was intresting.
People inject themselves with virus' from celeberties and also eat "steaks" made from cultivating their muscle cells. One of the people that takes the virus' gets fired,a replacement is sent for the top celeb which the fired person would normally handle. The replacement seems to take a liking to her though she's just sick in bed and then after getting her blood he injects himself with it without knowing what it is or how she got it. It's a good story with decent enough execution. It's from Brandon Cronenberg, doesn't quite have the magic of his father but still, good show.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I went and saw it yesterday at the first showing at the theater here. Definitely go see it. Awesome.
Some notes.
SpoilerHarrison Ford did a masterful job as Branch Rickey.
I thought the way they built the relationship between Jack and Pee Wee towards the end after he was shown all the letters was really cool.
I wanted to punch Philly's manager so bad.
I'm glad they didn't have Jack pimping the homerun like they did in the trailer, they did an excellent job of portraying him as a modest guy given the obvious circumstances.St. Louis Cardinals | Milwaukee Bucks | Los Angeles Rams
