I watched 42 again last night, and enjoyed it even more than the first time.

Then I watched Role Models, still funny. Now I'm giving Green Lantern another shot.

Miracle. I can't wait for amateurs to get back into the Olympics.

Captain Phillips. Much better than I thought it would be. Amazing story.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit - 6.5/10. You kind of know what you're going to get with these movies. Ridiculous plots, bad acting, lead character that miraculously can outrun machine gun fire, etc. That sad, I enjoyed it. Kept me entertained and the action wasn't too over the top.

Gravity 3D - 8/10. Saw this in 2D around launch and I wasn't that impressed. 3D changed the game though. I caught myself ducking debris once. As others have said, this won't translate well to home viewing.

The Wolf of Wall Street: probably more nudity, swearing, and drugs than any movie I have ever seen.

Nonetheless, it was awesome. Leo should bring home the Academy Award for Best Actor.

I think if anyone other than Scorsese makes that movie, it gets a NC17.

Not so sure. Obviously, it would be best suited for those with a projector setup, but I would have to believe that watching Gravity in 2D would not do it justice. The same with Pacific Rim.

We watched Elysium yesterday, it was pretty solid. A bit heavy-handed on it's immigration themes like D9 was with apartheid, but some pretty cool action.

I normally like Jodie Foster but she was such an ice queen in this I could tell she was acting, which was distracting. Maybe not the best choice for the role I guess. Matt Damon was great, as was the lovely Brazilian actress who played Frey (she was the sniper in "Predators").

                  It's worth a rent.

He had to make cuts to it, so it's not like he had free reign and they said "eh it's Scorsese". I'm sure there'll be an unrated Director's Cut on DVD.

Yeah, I knew about that. The theatrical version is still probably the hardest R rated movie I've seen. I'm still surprised they didn't make him cut more and I think they would have if it were any other director. I'm happy they didn't because I absolutely love the movie.

I read somewhere that Scorsese doesn't do Director Cuts in his DVDs.

                            Godzilla vs Mothra (1992)

This is a very good update of the classic '64 film that sees Godzilla taking on Mothra and Battra. This version has a stronger environmental focus and eschews some of the more silly/trippier elements of the original film. They still use elements such as the small women who more or less control Mothra but they're presented in a way that's a little more believable. (they once were a great civilization that controlled the weather but things went awry and the civilization was destroyed except for them and Mothra) There are a quite a few swipes at Spielberg/movies of his ilk in the '80s with the most notable being the main character stealing an ancient artifact in a temple and the temple falling apart Raiders of the Lost Ark style.

The movie uses humor in a more subtle way as the main character works with his ex wife and so they're a bickering couple but it isn't done in an overbearing way. The EEEEVIL corporation angle from the original film is present in this but it's more of a general "greedy corporation" type of evil rather than the silly caricature of big business from the '64 film.

The Kaiju battles in this are nothing short of spectacular with Godzilla and the other two monsters just wreaking havoc all over the place. You've got an underwater battle at one point that opens up a volcanic fissure in the ocean, you have Mothra being chased by Battra at night for some really nice scenery and Godzilla biting Battra's neck causing green, thick blood to spew out.

On the more beautiful side the scene of Mothra transforming to her butterfly/moth stage was just amazing. The combination of the music, the dusk setting and the way the light hits the silky web substance as she cocoons herself is breathtaking. If there's one reason to watch this movie it's for that sequence alone.

                            I give this a solid *** stars.

Just a note for anyone who may be following my scrawlings on movies. Modern Movie Monday will be delayed til next week. I will be back on my regular Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule the week after but will put up a classic flick and the next Godzilla movie at the appropriate time this week.

It was pretty good. One of those movies where you just have to suspend reality and try and enjoy the film for what it was. There were some definite funny scenes, and the outtakes were really good.
