    Extended Editions or Theatrical?

I did not read the books until after I saw the first two films.

I first saw Fellowship at home, the theatrical cut and didn't get into it. I actually preferred the first Harry Potter movie to it.

I decided to give Fellowship one more go on the Extended Edition though and it rocked.

This was actually a pleasant surprise. I liked all of the characters, decent writing, snappy direction, very good cast, a cool bad guy, a really fast car and fun and gratifying action.

Ah-nuld will always be himself in movies. As my son said, who is a budding filmmaker "Dad, he's not a great actor, but he's a FUN actor." And that is 100% spot on. He doesn't have a lot of range, but he's very good at what he does and has a very entertaining screen presence and sense of humor. That all comes through here as well.

Also worth noting that the stuff Arnold does is not too over the top at all, especially compared to his work in the 80's and 90's. It's actually pretty believable. Arnold is the star, but this film does have more balance to it and an ensemble feel, which helps flesh out all the colorful characters a bit.

One thing I liked is the movie had a solid set-up before it took off, so we care about the people, know who's who, and set up converging storylines.

I went in a little skeptical, but this was fun entertainment and worth a look. Recommended.
Agree 100%. I was very shocked that I enjoyed it. Its funny to say that about a movie that you paid $6 for, that I expected not to like it. But a combination of Knoxville and Arnold, I rented it more for the train wreck factor and ended up actually enjoying watching it in almost a Rambo (the new one) kind of way. Gratuitous violence and any film with Peter Stormare as a villain gets my thumbs up.

Also watched Riddick. Was very confused because DirecTV said I was paying for Riddick but pretty sure what I watched was Pitch Black in a new skin. I know its mindless action but man, this was such a straight ripoff was not fun to watch. No creative effort what so ever.

          It was theatrical unfortunately

I would probably enjoy the Fellowship a lot more now since I've seen the rest of them, it was just a little slow to get things going IMO.

The extended editions pacing is more enjoyable, but I can't really consider the Fellowship an action movie like the other two.

Hmm. Fellowship is my favorite of the 3. My 9 year old daughter, however, ranks them Two Towers, Return Of The King and then Fellowship. She loves those movies.

Yeah, check out the EEs when you can. There is some fairly essential material in there from the books that was left out, particularly in Fellowship (gifting scene especially).

As rocking as TTT and ROTK were, Fellowship is my favorite as well.

TTT has one of cinemas coolest openings with the Gandalf/Balrog fall.

ROTK is just epic, and has some real emotional punch to it that holds up to multiple viewings.

I like Gandalf The Grey as a character so much and he is such a big part of Fellowship. ROTK really does have too many "false endings" IMO. Otherwise it's great. I find TT to be the least emotionally involving of the 3.

So with the Oscar nominations announced, I decided to try to watch every movie nominated for anything, technical or song or anything. I've got 38 movies. I'll probably write up a short review on as many as I can. I've got 45 days so this should be fun.

                        Here's my list:
                        Spoiler

A lot of the documentaries are on Netflix, the rest will be Redbox'd, rented on Amazon, seen in theaters, or watched by other means. A small indie theater shows the animated, live action, and documentary shorts, which are usually my favorite films of the year. This should be interesting. Iron Man 3 is first up.

As far as the Oscars go, Robert Redford was robbed. He was sensational in All Is Lost.

The Internship - Better than I assumed it would be, worse than it could have been. It was a mix of Wedding Crashers and Dodgeball's stories, without the laugh-out-laugh moments. Solid movie, just short of good, but no where near the comedy these two have produced in the past.

                              Sinister

Intro had enough creepy for a whole horror movie. The 8mm home snuff films shown throughout were twisted and disturbing. One involving a swimming pool stuck out to me. What a way to go.

Like most horror movies there is a good amount of why would you do that moments. Story held up better than I expected with an ending that left me satisfied. Actually managed to spook me a little. And for that reason I'd recommend it if you have not seen it already.

I just saw it and it had funny parts, but had the potential to be much better.
