We're the Millers - Jennifer Aniston plays a stripper and is still hot but other than that I really didn't find this movie all that funny or entertaining.

Here Comes The Boom - Have always liked Kevin James, was a big fan of The King of Queens. A fan of his movies, not so much. I was however surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. Had some decent laughs and a pretty heartwarming story.

I have the Millers in the queue.

I agree on HCTB. I was pleasantly surprised by it and loved the casting. I have re watched the food fight scene on YouTube quite a few times too lol.

We were sitting around on New Years with the family and looking through On Demand for a movie and Here Comes the Boom was rated PG or PG 13 so we decided the kids could watch it. We really enjoyed it.

          The Wolverine (2013)

Well now i'm totally caught up on the X-Films and I have to say that this was a very solid film. It's the closest thing to the Chris Claremont iteration of Wolverine as you're ever going to get. The push and pull of Wolverine, who is forever wanting to go his own way in a tradition rich, honor bound place like Japan is brought to life here in a very engaging and wonderful way.

The acting throughout is all quite good and to me, Jackman did his best work here. He captures the world weariness and the horror of a man who lives life as an immortal soldier with nightmares of the things he's done. The tone and timbre of his voice is deeper and stronger especially in the intense/action scenes where the threatening tone in his voice is nearly terrifying. You actually believe for the first time really that this is a Wolverine who could go off on the deep end and give into his animalistic urges.

I do want to give props to the lady who played Viper. She does a lot with a pretty cardboard role but her charming malevolence heightens the threat of the character. You know she's evil to the core but you can't help but find her seductive and alluring in a deadly way. (I almost went for the pun and said she invokes a fatal attraction)

This is a great film if you want to see the inner workings of Logan's mind and as such it's not your typical action movie. It's a character study within the conventions of the superhero film subgenre.

I give this *** stars and maybe it will be bumped up to **** after I read the original Claremont 1982 comic book miniseries which this film heavily draws upon.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

So I'm on a Greek kick lately, and watched 'Alexander: Revisited', aka 'This is the final cut this time, I swear! Until next time anyway!' by Oliver Stone. LOL This version clocks in a little over 3 hours w/intermission.

Hmmm.....it's hard to put into words my feelings on this. I liked it in some ways and didn't like it in others.

            Liked:
            --Scenery and locations
--The casting was pretty good, but Jared Leto is too one-note for me in his performances. He's always seems just another version of the kid from "My So Called Life" tv series he started off in.
--Pacing was decent, but lots of talking...lots.
--Battle scenes were really good but some of the camerawork/editing was a little too frantic during them at times.
--The score was quite good at times, powerful choral sequences.
--Has a nice mythic quality to it, but overall I preferred Troy.

            Didn't like:

--My main beef is that it didn't show us enough of Alexander as a person; it was a little distant at times. It showed some of his nobility and tactical genius, and that he wasn't necessarily as good a king as he was a general, which is all good. But what about the reasons some thought him a tyrant? Where is the bad to offset the good? Where are the slaughters of entire town populations that he ordered? Where is his ruthlessness? Adding that stuff in would have maybe made him less sympathetic, but certainly more realistic.
--I might have shifted the balance just a few degrees towards a little more action from some of the oratory, but it's not egregiously talky either. Definitely has an epic feel that I did like.

Overall I like it. Jolie's character as his mother was...a little hard for me understand as a character. I just never understood her deal completely, but I DO like how she looked in the film, as well as Rosario Dawson

I think the film would have been more epic and dramatic by including more about Alexander's darker deeds in his campaign, and I would have liked to have seen some time spent on the Egyptian campaign and him becoming a pharaoh, as an outsider. That's intriguing to me.

Might be easier to score this than continue to prattle on....

            7/10
            3/5 stars

NOTE: I never bothered to watch any other version besides this cut.

I'm running through Wes Anderson films currently as a recommendation from my coworker. I've seen Moonrise Kingdom (awesome!) and just watched Rushmore for the first time. I liked it so much that I rewatched it immediately after it ended. Lol

My coworker is letting me borrow the rest of Wes Anderson's films and I'm pretty excited.

I really, really like Life Aquatic, but The Royal Tenenbaums might be my favorite with Moonrise Kingdom being a very close second.

Aside from all the Harry Potter blu-rays, and Sherlock Holmes, I've watched random horror movies on Netflix. Off the top of my head, American Psycho, Texas Chainsaw, Hannibal, The Iceman, Dread, and now Child's Play 2. In terms of content, Dread was the most intriguing.

Nothing on, decided to check out "The Raven" on Netflix. I'm a sucker for a good period piece, especially a gritty/dark themed one(something like Ripper Street). I liked the setup and cast, but the movie felt like it could have been something original, without all the Poe tie in. John Cusack was great, but they needed to put more time into the murderers angle.

                      The Last Stand, w/Ah-huld!

This was actually a pleasant surprise. I liked all of the characters, decent writing, snappy direction, very good cast, a cool bad guy, a really fast car and fun and gratifying action.

Ah-nuld will always be himself in movies. As my son said, who is a budding filmmaker "Dad, he's not a great actor, but he's a FUN actor." And that is 100% spot on. He doesn't have a lot of range, but he's very good at what he does and has a very entertaining screen presence and sense of humor. That all comes through here as well.

Also worth noting that the stuff Arnold does is not too over the top at all, especially compared to his work in the 80's and 90's. It's actually pretty believable. Arnold is the star, but this film does have more balance to it and an ensemble feel, which helps flesh out all the colorful characters a bit.

One thing I liked is the movie had a solid set-up before it took off, so we care about the people, know who's who, and set up converging storylines.

I went in a little skeptical, but this was fun entertainment and worth a look. Recommended.

Saw this recently too. Much better stated than me but pretty much exactly how I felt about the movie as well. Kudos to your son, that is a great way of describing Arnold.

                          Breakaway (1955/6)

Welp, this is the 2nd of the Tom Conway "Duke Martin" movies and boy, Conway was a lot more alert, looked 10 years younger and was able to pull off the debonair gentleman detective vibe much better. I somehow get the feeling that this one was filmed first and released after the first film. They wisely discarded the Falcon/Saint type formula and went with a more darker, serious tone to the proceedings. In a weird way that might not have been a good idea because while the corporate espionage plot with a macguffin was serviceable it was also pretty damn boring. Michael Balfour's Barney was toned down considerably as well. He was still the comic relief but by and large it wasn't over the top stupid and thus not all that "ha ha' humorous.

The only reason to watch this film from a pure enjoyment angle is to see a young Honor Blackman. (Ms. "ahem" you know Galore from Goldfinger) She was lovely as ever and I enjoyed seeing her in a cheapo little flick before she became a household name.

In the end I give this movie a weak ** mainly for Conway's better screen presence and for Honor Blackman.

Enjoyed this one a lot. Not often I can make it through over two hours in a movie without my attention going out the window. Ryan Gosling is a damn good actor. He sold the **** out of his character. I don't believe I should have felt any sympathy for him, but couldn't help it. Found myself almost abel to relate on some level.

Only problem I had with the movie was the final 1/3. Not that I hated it. Just wasn't as good as the rest. There was one scene at the end involving Eva Mendes that hit me pretty hard being a father myself. But I was able to brave through without the flood gates opening.

I liked the first and last third of the movie the most. The second third where it was mostly about Bradley Cooper and his son I didn't really enjoy, but I think that's because I really disliked those characters.
