The Wrestler. Very unique. Mickey Rourke was always a freakazoid though. Good story, but I'm not sure it was all that the hype was about. The most amazing thing was what levels Marisa Tomei would go to!

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints
A little background.
This movie was written and directed by a friend of mine(really a friend of my brothers....they were band mates....the reason they want to go to California..they actually got signed to Geffen Records)
The story is about his life and life in the neighborhood I grew up in.(I'm 1 1/2 years older than the guys in the film) The tension in the movie is actually a little muted as it focuses in on some particular events relating to Dito himself, but it's intense nonetheless. There were sets of this kind of thing going on everywhere in the neighborhood....if you didn't get out back then(like Dito and my brother) you literally wound up as a fireman, police officer, in jail(for murder or drugs usually) or dead. I know....depressing. But real.
I still live there and things to no surprise have changed dramatically(for the better).
Maybe it was the water...maybe the Con Edison plant that dominated a portion of the neighborhood...who knows....but it was quite nutty.
The movie is a little raw and disjointed...but he actually wanted to have it filmed this way. The dialogue is also a bit raw and rudimentary, but again....it's teenagers growing up in not so great conditions......and if you take the movie for what it is....at it's most base level.....it's real life...(on this...I will tell you without spoilers....that while everything in the movie happened....it didn't happen to or the exact way portrayed.)
SpoilerFor instance....in the film Mike Shea gets killed. Mike is alive and well...but it was another friend who did get murdered like in the film. Also Antonio goes to jail...but for much more(different also) than what's in the film. He also escaped from Rikers Island prison....but was recaptured and sent back. For anyone who knows Rikers Island...that itself is impressive. In real life..Antonio is actually crazier than in the film.
The cast is quite impressive. Robert Downey Jr., Shia Lebouf, Chazz Palminteri, Rosario Dawson, Channing Tatum, Eric Roberts and Diane Weist.
Won a Sundance Film Festival award.
It just became available on Watch Instantly on Netflix.
Keep an open mind.
Don't think any worse of me for growing up in the land of Misfit Toys...and know this. I LOVE Astoria....then...now and forever and I wouldn't have traded growing up there for ANYWHERE else. Awesome place to grow up.

North By Northwest - I watched the blu-ray a couple nights ago. Personally, I thought it was pretty awesome. I'll have to watch it again to see where it will fall in line as far as Hitchcock movies go.
Heavy Metal - I watched this last night. I feel like the movie was awesome, but I have no reasons as to why I think that because it made almost zero sense.

Watched Management last night. My wife made me do it.
Watched again, What About Bob? I still get a kick out of that movie, even though Dreyfus' character was really irritating. Didn't seem that way when I had orginally seen the movie.Comment

Casino-Made in 1995 starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone, excellent movie. Loved the voice-overs and every thing from the acting, to the dialogue to the violence was great. Favorite character was Pesci, some of his lines were classic, love a movie where the F bomb drops every minute. 9/10Ohio State - Reds - Bengals - Blackhawks - BullsComment

Got dragged to the movies to see The Couples Retreat with the gf. It was alright. Nothing I'd care to see again though.Comment
