Re: What movies have you seen recently?

IM3 was my second favorite IM movie and my 4th favorite Avengers film behind IM1, Avengers, and Captain America respectively.

I loved the twist, too, but I'm not a comic-book junky on Marvel.

Just got done watching Delivery Man and liked it. It wasn't hilarious or anything but it had a lot of heart. Chris Pratt did well though and think he should do more comedies for sure. Vince Vaughn, did alright in the emotional parts but is falling flat in the comedy. It could be the source material or he needs to get back in a roll as one of those douchebag characters he plays so well in.

For sure a date movie and not something to see with the boys. There are parts in it where your date might shed a tear and those opportune times to swoop in and make a move.

Cabin In The Woods. Not sure why it look me so long to watch this but I loved it. Very unique horror flick and a great cast. Being a big fan of The West Wing, I loved Bradley Witford in this.

          X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

Jeez, this movie was rushed and well...It shows. I think they tried to do way too much combining the "Gifted" storyline and the Dark Phoenix storyline. They should've just stuck to one storyline and run with it. As it is both storylines get short shrift and the political/moral aspect of being able to "become normal" is skimmed over to the point that it's meaningless.

There are some plot holes and the reverting Magneto to full on mustache twirling villain cheapens everything IMO. The enlarging of Halle Berry's role in this movie doesn't work at all and she's just as boring and secondary to the plot in this movie as she was in the other two.

I will say one positive thing about this, at least the action scenes were visually stimulating and kept the movie going. If the action was crappy it'd make the already overcrowded story with no development feel worse than it was.

I agree that it is the weakest of the three, first-gen Xmen films. But I also think it's pretty entertaining lol.

I will add that it did have some emotional value to it with the way Jean kills Xavier, and the reactions of those present for it. Not to mention the memorial bit at the end for Scott and Xavier after the war. X2 had more power but this was still pretty good for, as you say, an otherwise overwrought film.

If **** is tops, I'd score it **, for me.

X-men I'd give **1/2. The best part about it was the Rogue/Wolverine story, the rest was a little shaky at times.

            X2 I'd give ***. Really well done.

Yeah i'm a little tough on this film only because I thought it was just too much and too rushed. I agree and noted in my blog post that the action sequences made this movie entertaining at the very least.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Right. The sequence with the Golden Gate was great, in particular. And I liked the scene at the end where Jean is turning dudes to dust and raising the seas. That movie had quite a body count if you think about it.

                    Pacific Rim

Blind-bought the 3D Blu-ray during Black Friday, and finally gave it a viewing. If you recall, my initial response to the first trailer that I saw was that this looked like "a very fun video game, but not a very good movie." My opinion is still more or less the same, however I don't regret buying this and I think this is a fun film to watch. Actually, what really moved me was the running time. I thought this was going to be over in 90-100 minutes where it would just be bots in one colossal scene and that's it. I'm glad there was more than that.

However, the best fight scenes were the one when humans were put in the perspective of the shot, if that makes sense. The final act was a bit underwhelming, either because it was underwater or because it was just the bots vs. monsters... either way, there is no perception of their sizes when they're not standing tall above humans or crashing into skyscrapers. Otherwise the CGI was very good and the 3D really worked well here. I'm not even sure if watching this in 2D would be all that exciting.

The screenwriting and acting fall to the wayside, especially with the few foreigners that attempt to use American accents, but at least it attempts to carry a heart instead of disregarding it completely. Nothing is all that unexpected in this film, but I was pretty shocked at the amount of destruction they were able to incorporate into their budget. I thought Charlie Day and Ron Perlman were smart inclusions for their roles when inducing comic relief as well (though the majority of the film plays on satire anyway).

The length might make subsequent viewings tougher to stomach through, especially when I felt the final act was what dragged the most, but if there are opportunities for a boys night in and all my buddies want to catch a testosterone-heavy flick, I'll have enough glasses for them and now I have the right film as well.

Here are my succinct Pacific Rim thoughts:

                          PR > Transformers 1 (2 and 3 sucked hardcore)

I thought T1 was nicely done, but I enjoyed PR a whole lot more.

I didn't think it sucked, I just thought it wasn't eloquent Saving Private Ryan type film making. I enjoyed what I saw and I could laugh at myself for the lines they made intentionally hilarious. It can also be enjoyed by a large age group, and that's pretty important for a summer blockbuster like this. I think Del Toro hit the right notes and did what he intended to do.

I'm going to debate with myself on which one I liked more. TF2 is by far my least favorite out of all of these, but I like TF1 and TF3 a lot. TF3 should have been without any of the corny input Michael Bay puts into these films (though I think John Malkovich was on the Ron Perlman level and Ken Jeong was below Charlie Day), but the final act was better in this than in Pacific Rim, and in the end that's pretty important because that is what validates the runtime.

Plus, I think it's easier for me to like something like TF3 because of the returning characters that I am familiar with and the the Hasbro toys they are based on. Pacific Rim didn't really have any basis for what it was built on, and honestly I was more into the monsters than I was the bots. That being said, I kind of feel like on the bots side Transformers had done better in some capacity, and on the monsters side I think the upcoming Godzilla film might be more interesting. This is mostly because [like I said earlier] Godzilla will be scoped as large because it's terrorizing a city with humans the entire time rather than picking on something its own size.

I think I'll rank it as TF1 > TF3 >= PR > TF2, but the 3D is a stellar spectacle in PR. I think seeing the 3D in my own bedroom was a superior experience to that of seeing TF3 in 3D in the theater, so that's definitely saying something. It's pretty much a tossup.

To me it felt like a "classic" 80s action film, but the heroes were working in gigantic mech suits and fighting big-*** monsters so its like a culmination of several "cult" genres.

I'm hoping there is a sequel especially since it did very well internationally.

I would like to see a sequel as well. It was entertaining through and through. Bombastic, and in a good way.

I did enjoy that it really was built for the twelve-year-old in all of us. Like I said in my last post, it definitely hits a wide age group for that reason.
