        Knives Out

What a delightful unraveling of murder mystery mayhem, carefully crafted with witty wordplay, splendid camera work, raucous audience engagement, and a tour de force performance by Daniel Craig (with honorable mention to Michael Shannon).

This was a movie that overtly demanded your attention, and you were more than welcome to provide it (although given the PG-13 rating, I do question how it will hold up for minors during the first third of the movie). Rian Johnson made something that could take to the stage someday, and I think it's that kind of audience that this would compel most.

To say that it delivered would be an understatement. Every minute of the run time mattered. This will stick with me for a while, and hopefully also garner Oscar consideration for best original screenplay.

What movies have you seen recently?

          Doctor Sleep

Definitely worth seeing The Shining again before this one as the callbacks are imminent (I even caught the number "1980" in the film at one point), though there was no effort or intent to digitally recreate the faces of Nicholson, Duvall, or Lloyd. Comparatively, this film is significantly more accessible, which in turn probably drops the eeriness factor tenfold. This one is also much simpler to piece together, since Kubrick left so much in the first film for us to scratch our heads over what we were seeing. This is not a scary movie, nor would I even consider it to be a horror by any means (it falls into the drama/fantasy/thriller genres more so).

I thought it was neat and it held my attention, but it plays too much on the lore of something that didn't really seem existent in the first film and clung onto it way too often, so sometimes I kind of asked it to get to the punchline. I’m guessing this was adapted from the novel, though. Anyway, what helped that end of the film not drag too much was the eye candy that is Rebecca Ferguson. Then this film had kind of a continuous heartbeat (which I loved) that would often play in moments when you would get the shrill sound that played in the first film, and in appropriate times even brought back sounds of the original score.

One minor insincerity is that while it first opens up with the classic WB logo on film stock and Shining score, it jumps right after that to a clean, digital opening with bluish filters and the like. I wish they went for the film look, but I looked past it once the story got going. Anyway, I didn't love it, but I certainly dug it and found it worthwhile.

          Ford v Ferrari

Shamefully, I knew nothing about the history of this race, or even the film's production. I assumed this was "Matt Damon as Ford and Christian Bale as Ferrari," and that's not even close to what it was heh. Of course, this is a movie that I was anticipating and avoided all trailers for, so consider me pleased at always being surprised with what I watched. This was in a D-Box screening where I didn't sit in one of those seats, but if I catch this again I think I want to try it out. There are enough moments that James Mangold puts you right on the ground with the other cars, and the driving action is pretty impeccable. The actors don't hurt when it comes to feeling the grip of those moments.

The cast in general was top-notch, and it goes without saying that Damon and Bale were nuanced in their performances. Though Bale is my favorite actor and did fantastic (there is one scene where he has this complete nonverbal moment and made me feel more at that time than any other time in the film), Damon ultimately sold me more with his performance and what he needed me to feel and when. Then you also have Bernthal and Lucas who fit right in. Everything from a production standpoint in this film just worked.

The movie really kicks in about a half hour through, and honestly it never stops from there. Once you have all introductions and setups out of the way (and not that it's a grind, but it does test you at moments in what kind of picture you were hoping to see), it's all a nice ride from there. This one also got me to laugh about every 2-3 minutes with some quip here or there, which is a nice turn from Doctor Sleep which was in large parts very brooding and serious. It ends with a few captions to talk out the true story, and although I maybe didn't feel as hard as the movie demanded me to, I was still overcome with the heat of every action that took place, especially on the track.

I remember after F&F Tokyo Drift came out and I had already had my license, going out of that parking lot in my manual transmission was a thing of beauty; same held true for the fourth film in that franchise, but after it turned into like a superhero heist thing I haven't had another film give me that kind of energy leaving the theater. Ford v Ferrari was the first one to do that for me again, loving every bit of pushing in the clutch and pulling through the gates 1-to-6, getting a feel for turns and looking at the RPM gauge. Not driving like a maniac or anything, but rekindling the joy of stick-shift driving all over again. Like I said before, maybe seeing this in a D-Box seat will be that next venture, as I'm willing to check it out once more in theaters with others.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

I thought it was excellent. Tom Hanks nailed it as Mister Rogers. I'm an enormous Tom Hanks fan though. I could watch that man read the Dictionary.

Really good story and showed just how good of a person Mister Rogers was.

Just saw Knives Out. Might be the movie of the year for me. Great story with great acting. Just a very smart movie that is so well done.

Craig's accent reminded me of Kevin Spacey's Character in House of Cards. Very good movie though.

Yes, I was trying to picture who he most sounded like. Was it a character from a specific show/movie? Some actor? Maybe it was Kevin Spacey (I haven't seen the show, but I've seen his "Let Me Be Frank" bit). At the time, I was thinking maybe it was a Tommy Lee Jones thing. I couldn't ever fully place it.

I eventually lost him in the role, though. He was very good in this.

This is exactly what I thought about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood or better titled "I Got to Be in a Quentin Tarantino Movie For the First Time". This seemed to go no where at every place where they tried to make a turn. Pitt's "crescendo" scene seemed ridiculous and, frankly, beneath his acting record. The only "shocker" was who the heck that was who played the cameo of Steve McQueen so well.

Hope we can get more movies with the detective. We'll done Rian Johnson
