Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I spent the last month watching all of the Star Wars films.

My thoughts on the prequels changed a little; Phantom Menace isn't as bad as I remember it. Attack of the Clones is really bad and Revenge of the Sith is honestly just OK; Anakin's turn to Vader ultimately falls a little flat for me. I really don't know if I'll invest time in the future watching these films; there's just not enough there that I really like that I'm willing to sit through all of the not so good parts.

Episodes VII and VIII also changed a little; I've flipped them in my personal ranking. I really like where the story was headed in The Last Jedi, and that's why Rise of Skywalker really bummed me out that it didn't follow up on really anything from that film. The Force Awakens is a fun movie, but I find I like it less with each subsequent viewing.

    1. The Empire Strikes Back
    2. A New Hope
    3. Rogue One
    4. Return of the Jedi
    5. The Last Jedi
    6. The Force Awakens
    7. Revenge of the Sith
    8. The Rise of Skywalker
    9. Solo
    10. The Phantom Menace
    11. Attack of the Clones

Fortunately, there was, at the center anyway, a coherent storyline in the prequel trilogies. For whatever reason, the sequel trilogy wasn't able to accomplish that. Bad acting, bad dialogue, bad/not very good movies overall, but they did open up the Star Wars universe quite a bit and gave us some excellent extended universe material as a result. Darth Jar Jar anyone???

The sequels, overall, don't really add anything. They're well-done movies, for the most part, and the acting is never really a problem, but the mish-mash of story lines really kills any momentum or good will. The Last Jedi is easily my favorite of the three, but with Disney's tinkering it feels more like a bottle episode than the middle arc of a trilogy.

      ANYWAY

We had a bit of a 90s movie night this weekend watching Austin Powers International Man of Mystery followed by Bad Boys. I would say both are clearly dated. Austin Powers post the #MeToo awakening is a bit much and I understand he's meant to be a "relic" so it still works I suppose. For me, the Dr. Evil bits are still just as funny and have aged the best.

Bad Boys feels more like a TV show than a blockbuster movie. At least by today's standards. Martin and Will own this movie and carry every scene. To me this feels like the beginning of modern cinematic blockbuster action movies.

This right here FT. After we purchased Disney+ I tried to go back through and watch them all in the right order and I stopped. I couldn't get past how bad the acting and dialogue was//is. Just ruins it for me because I liked the older Star Wars and could get past the outdated tech.

          Bad Boys for Life.

I didn't know much about the cast outside of the obvious, but nice to see my one time OS Dibs (circa 2011) Vanessa Hudgens. I was also caught off guard by Alexander Ludwig... weird seeing him play any other role besides Bjorn Ironside in Vikings.

          Anyways... it was really good.

What does the MeToo movement have to do with an Austin Powers movie? It's fake. It's make believe. It's stupid humor. And no one was raped.

I actually think Austin Powers holds up especially well for those reasons. They were making fun of the idea that Bond could get any woman he wanted and even had him be a literal relic from the past that was unfrozen.

Its cringey to watch. I understand the premise and Austin "learning", but some of the scenes are still cringe-worthy.

I am very much aware the movie is fictional - thanks for the clarification.

Regardless, those scenes aged fair less gracefully than the Dr. Evil scenes.

                  Terminator- Dark Fate

I'm a big fan of the films, and my expectations for Jim C's own screenplay were a little too high I guess. The action pieces were really cool, but the story as a whole felt like what 'The Force Awakens' was for the Star Wars saga. Some good stuff, but re-ran over old ground and didn't feel completely necessary.

Rewatched the first two Bad Boys movies last weekend, first time my wife saw either.

Bad Boys is still great. A classic 90s action film that I think still holds up well today. The banter between Smith and Lawrence never gets old.

Bad Boys 2 was still enjoyable, but definitely not as good. Comedy was a bit more forced and then things just went way over the top in cuba.

No, I'm not trying to belittle you or it. Being "cringe-worthy" though is a matter of subjectivity. Any comedy or content for that matter can be considered cringe-worthy by an individual depending on their values.

For example, I recently re-watched "Bad Times at the El Royale". I love everything about that movie. And there were a few fairly brutal killing scenes. Cringe-worthy? I guess that depends on your viewpoints. Of violence. Of violence in movies. Killing of males vs. females vs. children, etc.

I mean I know where you're coming from though.

I enjoyed this movie and the story a lot.
I know there has been a lot of talk that is not historically accurate. But it’s a decent movie.

Hated it. Bored the crap out of me.
Matter of fact I quit watching with about 15 minutes left. Yeah I watched an hour and 20 minutes and cut my losses. It’s based on Shai Lebeouf’s life. And I hate that he had to go through a very rough childhood. But the movie is just awful.

I wish I had waited to see this in Imax because the animations were beautiful. Although I had heard of him, this was my first time experiencing a Makoto Shinkai film, and it lived up to expectations. Like I said, the animations were beautiful, and that's the best way to describe the movie from the anmations, to the music, to the story. It was all very powerful. There clearly was some Miyazaki influence in this, but it was still fresh. Excellent and touching movie. Next, I'm going to have to check out Your Name, also by Makoto Shinkai.

I've seen eight of the nine Best Picture nominees so far. This is how I would currently rank them (not necessarily as "favorite to least," but more so where I think they should rank for BP):

                            1917
                            Marriage Story
                            Jojo Rabbit
                            Parasite
                            The Irishman
                            Joker
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood
                            Ford v Ferrari

I'll only catch Little Women if I see it with my mom.

We finally watched Godzilla King Of The Monsters.

If you love monster movies you will love this one.

Much better than the 2015 Godzilla (which I enjoyed). And it set’s up the upcoming King Kong vs Godzilla.

Ton’s of Kaju on the screen and plenty of action. Amazing effects. Plenty of camp. It was a lot of fun.

You do not watch these for plot. You watch them for the glorious battles and mass destruction.
