Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
I wasn't a big fan of the ending
Spoiler
So this dude that thinks of everything, doesn't have his lair under surveillance? Also, it seemed pretty quick for them to be able to realize they couldn't disarm the bomb and be able to transport it back to his cell before he got back.
Other than that, it was a decent action flick.SpoilerI don't really think the bomb was even disarmed, I think it was just moved. Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
SpoilerNah. I'm talking about they took time to TRY and disarm it. So basically while Gerald Butler's character was on his way back, they had enough time to: 1) try to disarm the bomb 2) figured out they couldn't 3) pack it up 4) beat him back to the hideout 5) set the bomb up 6) have Jamie Foxx in there waiting on him. Me thinks they didn't have THAT much time.

and yes, the ending sequence should have take a lot longer than that. They went from clueless to masterminds in 10 minutes lol

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
She's Out of My League
Just saw a pre-screening tonight. What can I say? It lived up to it's mediocre trailer run, though that's saying nothing at all. It did absolutely nothing that any movie before it hasn't done, and it played out in such a cliché fashion that eventually I got to the point where I stopped laughing only because I was laughing with the audience, and instead let the humorless movie play out.
So let's see... we have the less-than-spectacular main character that is trying to get back with his ex-girlfriend but he's not good enough for her, check. We have the three buddies that all have their own "personality" with one being the best friend who tries to get with the main girl character's best friend but is constantly rejected, another friend being the super awkward one that can't live down seeing the positive in everything 24/7 and is thrown in for the one-liners (which in this case is just a bunch of movie references, specifically from Disney), and the third guy whose name you won't ever remember but is there to complete the square and throw in consoling messages to whomever will care to listen... check. We have the girl's ex-boyfriend and her parents ****-block the relationship at any possible means when things are looking up, not to mention the awkward family members from the main character's side... check. We have the downer period an hour into the movie where everyone is depressed, check. We have the movie's "funny" moments come from incessant swearing, people falling down or being hit, scenes from the trailer, and homosexual innuendos... check. And dare I call it a spoiler, but we have an ending that unfolds exactly as one thought that it would unfold before even seeing the movie... check.
Honestly, this could have... no, wait... should have been a PG-13 movie. All that needed to be dropped were any F-bombs. Honestly, it would have gotten much more publicity from the crowd that enjoys this kind of humor, would have gotten less media exposure, and thusly would have not been disliked as much from people like myself who should try and hold it up higher to the recent R-rated comedies like Superbad and Knocked Up. The humor in this movie is just so awkward that it doesn't fit in with what general people look for. I bet even the actors were often times unsettled with some of the dialogue and action they had to deliver on camera. Let's put it this way... in the theater, it will help you laugh because it's on the big screen and others are laughing. When this movie hits Showtime and you're checking it out at 2:00 PM on an off-day, you may be inclined to change the channel. The only thing that will keep you watching is Alice Eve's hotness (who is not quite a 10, but still very good looking).
Aside from the main resolution, this film kicked a lot of subplots to the side of the curb and seemed to forget to write more story that they tried to develop in the beginning of the movie, where everything else pretty much flies out the window. So there is a main resolution, but what comes of it? It's never really clear-cut, nor does it allow the ending to be "feel-good" with the abruptness.
There was only one thing worth noting in this movie, and that was the good soundtrack. Aside from the nice choice of 90's alternative rock songs, there was a nice upbeat score that would play in some parts of the movie (more so the beginning of it) that reminds me of something David Holmes would mix up/compose. I'll give them props for a great choice of sound.
One last thing, this movie was probably filmed sometime late last summer, because the inadvertent yet proud Pepsi sponsorship showed the yellow bottle caps that they had during that Rock Band promotion. I just figured a lot of OS guys would catch onto that one if you saw it. But I say hold onto your money. If this was PG-13 and you were 15 years old on a Friday night with a group of friends, I'd say knock yourselves out. Otherwise, definitely pass. It doesn't try and compete with the R-rated movies of the past few years, and ideally it definitely isn't as good.
On a completely unrelated note, I noticed that I never wrote about the other two movies that I saw recently: Law Abiding Citizen and Death Sentence. Let's just say that I liked LAC a lot more than DS, but I just don't have the energy to write about them now. Maybe another day.Last edited by Blzer; 03-05-2010, 01:16 AM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
Well I haven't been watching many movies lately but I did watch one today called Flowing Gold (1940) starring John Garfield, Pat O'Brien and Frances Farmer. here's the summary:
Johnny Blake, dodging the law on a false murder charge, gets work in the oil fields. His boss and friend Hap O'Connor turns on him when Johnny and Hap's girlfriend Linda fall in love
There are a couple scenes in the movie that are really great technically. One scene is the gusher at the oil well. There's a shot from the top of the derrick and you see the oil shooting up straight at you. The other great scene is at the end of the movie where the same oil derrick is struck by lightning and there's a HUGE oil fire that has to be doused.
So this is just a typical 2 star flick but it's a good way to pass an hour and a half.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Where The Wild Things Are - Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. From the acting, to the directing, to the way it was shot, everything was just great. A completely enjoyable 90 minutes for young and old.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn

Re: What movies have you seen recently? Part 1
I got a question....when does Part 2 of this thread happen?
Anyways back on topic, Today I watched the very first of the Bowery Boys films. A little background for you all is in order. The Bowery Boys started off as the Dead End Kids and they made their big screen debut in the movie Dead End (1937) starring Humphrey Bogart. (I believe I reviewed it somewhere in this thread) Anyways, the movie was such a hit that WB made more movies with the kids and the one that's probably best known to everyone today is Angels With Dirty Faces. (1938) Producer Sam Katzman noted the popularity of the kids and created his own group of tough guy youths in the East Side Kids. Eventually he hired Leo Gorcey (who was the most famous of the kids) and Bobby Jordan.
The group went through a ton of changes through the years but nonetheless were still very popular however, in 1945 Gorcey quit the group when Katzman wouldn't agree to double his salary and thus the series ended as well. Gorcey, Jordan and Jordan's agent Jan Grippo met up and formed their own production company and ventured on making a new series with the title of The Bowery Boys. The format was changed a bit as well as it was no longer focused on hardened, tough guy youths but centered on Gorcey's main character "Slip" Mahoney and his pals, most notably the increasingly buffoonish "Sach" Jones.
Whew!
The first movie was called Live Wires (1946)
Slip gets fired from his job at a construction company for decking his boss. His sister, who got him a job at the company, is angry with him. Slip manages to get a job with the District Attorney serving warrants, as does Sach. Through his job, Slip finds out that all is not quite kosher at his old construction company, and that his sister may be in danger.
The plot is pretty standard but Gorcey carries the show quite well. I always thought he looked like a street thug version of Bob Hope especially in his later years. Huntz Hall who plays Sach had the kind of rubbery face and vocal quality to him that made him delightfully buffoonish but without being grating. There's a part in the movie where Slip tells Sach about his problems and Sach talks about a girl he thinks about and he's all "ohhh" and staring off into space. Slip slaps Sach and he comes back with "I can't talk when she's dancing!"
Actually in a lot of ways the humor incorporates some Three Stooges style physical bits with a ton of verbal humor that was more the gang's own trademark.
Before I go, I want to relate another gag. Slip gets tickets to a swanky nightclub and dresses up acting all hoity toity. As he leaves the apartment Sach slams Slip's hat on his head and Slip responds "My cigar" hands it to Sach then slaps Sach silly with his gloves and walks out with his hat.
Anyways as far as a reboot and start of popular (and long running at 48 films) series goes this is a solid 2 1/2 stars. It dragged a bit toward the end.
Apparently TCM will be every single one of the Bowery Boys movies over the next 48 weeks on Saturdays.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
