Caught up on some of the DC movies with Black Adam and Blue Beetle.

I had really low expectations for Black Adam after everything I had heard about it, but I thought it was OK. Not the best superhero movie ever, but not the worst either.

    Blue Beetle was pretty good.

      Rebel Moon

I saw all the negative reviews, and I really thought people were just trashing it because of it being some kind of Star Wars clone. It looked fun, and all I wanted was to be entertained for 2 hours.

The first 45 minutes were painful. My overall my reaction was just wow, someone actually wrote this.

As Harrison Ford once said to George Lucas:

"George, you can type this ****, but you can't say it."

No, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were not "snubbed" from the Oscars. This is of course my opinion, but the loud set of folks you hear yell snub from this are exactly who you'd think they are: people who have watched Barbie and hardly any other films this year, and are also the kinds of folks who would be loud enough on social media regarding it.

Note that there is not a single snub on my list who I would also believe should win the award. They are only replacing who I think is on the bottom regarding overall recognition.

            I didn't hate it.

Dialogue and acting was atrocious, but the story and vision elements were cool. Good to see a comic book movie without getting huge in the physical superpower stuff. If a sequel existed, even with better writing and acting, it could become inferior just by being another superhero flick in comparison.

What movies have you seen recently?

Blzer I know you are a film connoisseur.

I love movies....watch them literally all the time too.

But as a rabid movie fan myself I stopped caring about the Oscars...gee I don't know at least 25 years ago. Not that I ever really cared....but I guess watch with any interest?

It's so vein it's disgusting. While I love movies I don't care about actors and actresses who think they are literally doing God's work and changing lives and literally have to use the Oscars as a political platform.

              It's just so......phony.

Anyway carry on. I love reading all your reviews.

                Sydney Sweeney was terrible, IMO.

I did enjoy all the little Spiderman Easter eggs, but Sony needs to really figure out how to incorporate him into these films.

                Or something.

I care about who wins, but I'm pretty certain that unless Gervais or Chappelle, or someone in that vein hosted (which ain't gonna happen), I'm never watching an Oscar ceremony ever again.

I enjoy checking the list of winners on IMDb after the ceremony, reading a bit here and there about anything noteworthy that happened (Will Smith?) and then watching some clips of the winners reactions as they are announced.

Oh, I think who wins is extremely important. They are cemented in history. People will always remember them for that, and they might not remember them otherwise. I wouldn't know what The Artist was if it didn't win Best Picture, and wouldn't have watched the majority of Best Picture winners if they didn't win.

Less so who is nominated, but I think I brought up the nominations thing to actually have an opinion on it rather than just call out the Barbie fans out there that are saying: "We saw one movie in theater this year, we loved it, therefore if their cast/crew weren't included they were snubbed." It helps to be a little more well-rounded and level-headed in a case like this, and of course my opinion is my opinion (I mean, Tobin freakin' Bell?), but I'm only replacing somebody if I've seen those films. If I were a little more extreme on the matter and stated snubs if I think they had a legitimate shot at winning, I don't think I could replace anybody here. So as I said, a little less important.

Now, why are the Oscars important? I know that people scoff at the idea of the elite patting the backs of the elite and so on and so forth, plus the incessant political speeches they've been making the past seven or so years... but the Oscars are important because they indicate to studios, fans, and the like where the current of the industry can flow next. Many filmmakers do strive to get recognized at the Oscars, and so what gets recognized there has an impact on the kinds of movies we get to see. And because what gets nominated and what wins ends up influencing box office receipts. The kinds of things that win and get nominated have a big influence on the kinds of things that can get funding in Hollywood, which in turn affects what we get to watch

This year is a better example than any. Maybe Barbie and Oppenheimer won't get a massive new box office influx because of how many people have already seen them, but Christopher Nolan being hailed with a Best Director and Best Picture would be a heavy influence on the cinema landscape, and it would bring anyone and everyone to their knees to be in bed with him, including the Broccoli's with their Bond property. Is Nolan above Bond? Sure. But can you imagine the buzz around a new Bond film "From Academy Award winner Christopher Nolan, the mind behind Academy Best Picture Oppenheimer," shot in large format? Assuming the film is great, this US/UK dual-citizen would bring in $2 billion, and he alone would net over $200 million. Of course, he doesn't have to do Bond. The point is any studio and virtually every actor will take every pay cut to ensure that he keeps the theatrical business thriving the way that it should. Hopefully everyone else follows as a result.

Anyway, the Oscars are one of my favorite television evenings of the year outside of the Super Bowl. I'm a big fan, and like to see what is considered some of the better movies out there. Thankfully I had already seen six of the ten before the nominations list came out, and was already intent on seeing Killers of the Flower Moon before that (I only had Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest, and American Fiction to check out). This is a great Best Picture list this year and I recommend all of them, but ain't nothing touching Oppenheimer.

And thanks! I know I have posted less frequently because I can barely get to the computer during this time of year for my own typing pleasure, but I'll continue posting when I feel I'm able to say something about something!

Everybody was terrible. And you know what that means... if every actor/actress is terrible, then it's not the fault of theirs, but the fault of the director.

The Easter Eggs were nice because somebody who literally doesn't know anything about Spider-Man lore might not necessarily know that he is actually being hinted at whatsoever in the film. As far as Spider-Man goes, personally I find that to be a weak crutch. If they think that inserting Spider-Man in a movie is what makes it good, they have another thing coming. Sure, it'll bring in money... but it won't guarantee critical success. A good movie is all that's needed.

This was by no means a good movie, and probably deserve all the hate that it gets. I found it extremely watchable regardless.

Had Dark Shadows(2012) on in the background while doing work today. Like most recent Tim Burton movies, it was ok? Thought the best bits of the film were the gothic visuals and town bits. Depp and Burton collaborations are hit and miss, but I did like Sleepy Hollow.

The last couple weeks, I've watched Barbie, The Holdovers, and Oppenheimer. All were great movies.

But honestly, I think I liked Barbie a little better. I Oppenheimer was fantastically acted (especially Cillian Murphy), but I think it was a little too much Nolan. I love his style, but I felt like it could have used less of the really quick, drop in scenes. Especially in the first hour or so of the film where they were jumping around in time a lot more. Later in the film, it felt a little more linear, and scenes at seemed like they had more room to breathe. Still thought it was a fantastic film, though. That just brings it down a little bit below the other two for me.

Probably going to at least watch Maestro and Killer of the Flower Moon over the next few days.

I enjoyed it overall, just too much politics.

I'd be curious what an Oliver Stone-like re-cut would do for the movie.

I watched Maestro and, frankly, really disliked the movie.

I didn't like the acting. I thought Carrie Mulligan had some great scenes, and then some others I didn't care for. I thought Bradley Cooper was pretty bad. He was trying very hard to act, and it didn't read as a very present performance for him. And the prosthetic made it sound like he had a cold for most of the film. I looked up a video of Leonard Bernstein just to see if that was just part of his voice, but it didn't come across to me that way. And even Cooper's delivery beyond that seemed like a very exaggerated version of Bernstein's actual cadence.

And I didn't really like the progression of the color/aspect. I get that it was meant to show the progression of time, but I think set and costume design do that just as well. Doing it visually in terms of how television and film looked through the years would be really interesting if the primary subject heavily involved television and film. But given the focus of this biopic was a conductor and composer, it didn't fit for me.

This just seemed like a vanity project designed solely to get Bradley Cooper an Oscar. Didn't feel like a whole lot happened in the movie, and it didn't feel like it really said anything. It was a movie for the sake of being a movie, but wasn't at least fun like a popcorn type movie.
