Re: What movies have you seen recently?
So I saw twenty summer films in theaters before returning to school next week, and I've even seen some of them twice (Spider-Verse, M:I, Oppenheimer which I'll see a third time on Sunday). If Fast X is considered the start of the summer movie releases, I could count Evil Dead Rise since I saw it in theaters after Fast X, but it came out in April so I won't count it.
Here are my rankings from least favorite to most favorite, and I think I've left impressions for all of them in this thread:
20. Insidious: The Red Door
19. Fast X
18. Elemental
17. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
16. Gran Turismo
15. Talk to Me
14. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
13. Joy Ride
12. Barbie
11. The Flash
10. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
9. The Little Mermaid
8. The Blackening
7. Strays
6. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
5. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
4. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
3. Sound of Freedom
2. Past Lives

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Elemental
I found this movie to be incredibly disjointed.
It had a wonderful world to build upon, but it was only slightly explored and mostly a confined story. Also, as far as Pixar worlds go, this is one of the few that doesn't exist in "our world." Cars and Wonder are the same, and both have their faults as well. I suppose so long as you anthropomorphize the characters people can find some connection in them, but Pixar normally excels in those other ways where it fictionalizes something within our world (fish, toys, bugs, etc.) and puts a spin on it. I understand the allegories presented along the way, but even that had a lot of holes when it come to the story itself.
Speaking of which, by Pixar's standards this had a very lackluster story. It was cool that they went with a rom-com, but if you remove the world and the ariistry and present it as its real-life counterpart, this doesn't work at all. The chemistry between the two leads was manic and lackluster. One of the leads in particular has an introduction that frankly made them incredibly unlikable, and for me that was hard to have them rebound from. The focus was on the wrong parts of the film, perhaps trying to overemphasize the "immigration" story aspect a little too much in place of the end result. Despite me stating that this world has a lot more to be ambitious with, I think the story they wanted to tell would've served better as a short.
One of the film's main conflicts is similar to that in Zootopia, which serves as a commentary of different races and the like. The problem with it in this movie saying "Fire and water don't mix" or whatever is that they literally [i[don't[/i] mix. Water extinguishes fire, and fire evaporates water. And heaven forbid if they end up somehow overcoming that, this would only be by something explained scientifically and not by some form of willpower or upsetting societal norms. So again, I found this movie to just be all over the place, and although it had an artistic style it's not one of Pixar's more impressive efforts in that regard. I thought it had a cool soundtrack which I'd be fine listening to, but otherwise I don't plan on watching this one again.
I had no idea what the movie was about before watching it, but I was expecting it to be like an element version of Inside Out, except replace emotions and all that with fire, water, air and so on. This wasn't that at all.
Even from the beginning of the movie I thought it was gonna be something like a movie with all different element characters interacting and getting to see the whole world of elements. Instead it turned into a "fire hates water, water hates fire" movie and that was really it.
I still like it better than Turning Red, that movie just sucked, but in terms of recent Pixar movies, it's not better than Lightyear or Soul or Onward.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I liked Guardians 3.
The whole story with Rocket was a great one and finally explains his past.
I would've liked it if they made Rocket "adopt" his own "experiments" that he has joining the team with him like he originally intended to do with all his old friends.
The movie as a whole was good, but the Rocket story was the roller coaster one.Comment

Kandahar - 9 out of 10 for me. Probably the best movie Gerald Butler made in a long time.

Oppenheimer is a great movie. In particular, I really like the soundtrack: Can You Hear The MusicComment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
A lot of the "high tech" type movies really fall off when you look at them over a decade later. I find it fascinating a movie like Iron Man, made in 2008 and over 15 years ago, still holds up and looks like it was made last month.Originally posted by Gibson88Anyone who asked for an ETA is not being Master of their Domain.
It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Phase 1 MCU even looks better than a lot of the newer movies imo.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The flip phone era in movies always cracks me up. The Departed is an all time classic, but so many flip phones. Somehow a movie from the 1930s with those old fashioned rotary style phones feels less dated lol.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
And I mean more so from flip phone to Smartphone, not like from the 1600s to today.
