Did not enjoy The Flash. Yeah the fan service was nice but I didn't like the CGI. The story was not a good adaptation of Flashpoint and then the elephant in the room in Ezra.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Interesting. Word has it they had addressed the audio mix issue in Spider-Verse. There are even articles about it.
I had the same problem, but I saw it both times on opening weekend before they had addressed it.
Hard pass. I get if there is an option available for people, but I don't want subtitles on my screen unless I have to have them (foreign languages, for example). I hate watching streaming content at another family member's house because they have their apps with CC on all the time.
It forces me to read it when I already know what's being said. You could say "ignore it," but that is a conscious act to do (meaning I'm "aware" of it the entire time, like trying to avoid looking at the sports ticker to not see scores for other games), and my mind subconsciously sees the length of the text so I'm aware of how long that person will speak for before they finish their sentence. That's by no means a spoiler of any kind, but expectation has been set.
I don't need that in my theater-going experience. Again, the option would be fine if they offered that for a screening or two in the day. I'd avoid those screenings though. But when you say "This is why they need them," what they need is a better audio mix. Strangely enough, this is something they actually did. Maybe his theater didn't get the file.

My son saw The Flash…said he enjoyed it but some of the CGI was laughably bad.
Will wait to stream it on Max.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I saw The Flash and liked it a lot. It even managed to get me emotional a couple of times.
I'm a big complainer about CGI, many people here know this. There was pretty bad CGI, but a lot of it was also par for course, and some of it was good CGI as well. Also, some of it was a stylistic choice and was "worse" but I won't explain when or how this happens. In all, it's just like any other movie these days that can't seem to crack the CGI code.
I was a little harsher toward Transformers though because they didn't seem to improve much visually since tentpole films in that franchise, even though the visuals have "evolved." There is more you can get away with when you have materials such as metal, and they didn't seem to do that.
That's why I can't wait for likes of Mission: Impossible and Oppenheimer soon. Many more practical shots and on location. The Blackening
Quite a hoot. Glad that while it was a satire, it wasn't exactly a parody, meaning the characters were in actual peril. Great to see with an engaged audience too. I will say that I was able to mostly predict where this movie was going with things, but it didn't take away from the best aspects which were the humor and the characters.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Elemental
I found this movie to be incredibly disjointed.
It had a wonderful world to build upon, but it was only slightly explored and mostly a confined story. Also, as far as Pixar worlds go, this is one of the few that doesn't exist in "our world." Cars and Wonder are the same, and both have their faults as well. I suppose so long as you anthropomorphize the characters people can find some connection in them, but Pixar normally excels in those other ways where it fictionalizes something within our world (fish, toys, bugs, etc.) and puts a spin on it. I understand the allegories presented along the way, but even that had a lot of holes when it come to the story itself.
Speaking of which, by Pixar's standards this had a very lackluster story. It was cool that they went with a rom-com, but if you remove the world and the ariistry and present it as its real-life counterpart, this doesn't work at all. The chemistry between the two leads was manic and lackluster. One of the leads in particular has an introduction that frankly made them incredibly unlikable, and for me that was hard to have them rebound from. The focus was on the wrong parts of the film, perhaps trying to overemphasize the "immigration" story aspect a little too much in place of the end result. Despite me stating that this world has a lot more to be ambitious with, I think the story they wanted to tell would've served better as a short.
One of the film's main conflicts is similar to that in Zootopia, which serves as a commentary of different races and the like. The problem with it in this movie saying "Fire and water don't mix" or whatever is that they literally [i[don't[/i] mix. Water extinguishes fire, and fire evaporates water. And heaven forbid if they end up somehow overcoming that, this would only be by something explained scientifically and not by some form of willpower or upsetting societal norms. So again, I found this movie to just be all over the place, and although it had an artistic style it's not one of Pixar's more impressive efforts in that regard. I thought it had a cool soundtrack which I'd be fine listening to, but otherwise I don't plan on watching this one again.
Past Lives
There are films that will last with you for a long time. For me, this is one of those movies. It is quite a remarkable feat for first-time writer-director Celine Song, who amazed me in her debut showing no signs of amateurish craftsmanship.
Past Lives reminded me a lot of Before Sunset in the best ways possible, and it seemed to be perfect timing for a single man in middle adulthood like myself to watch and gain a lot of introspective on. Although a simple plot, this movie is deeply layered with themes about growing up/passage of time, relationships, choices made, dreams, regrets, what-ifs, and closure. Although this is not based on any one true story, this movie feels like many people’s true story in one way or another. I felt that I was bottling up certain emotions watching it the entire time, and a moment in the third act gave me a chance to release all of them at once, at the time for the character(s) but later I realized it was also for myself.
This movie took its 102-minute runtime at a very easy pace. During a summer filled to the brim with explosions and many duds throughout, this was a breath of fresh air to see on the silver screen. Although not necessarily on the tier of masterpiece, it sure was a masterclass in storytelling and making me as an audience member feel something afterward that I won’t let go of for quite a while, and will feel the need to act on sooner than later. Believe it or not, this struck a chord with me much more than A24’s last super impressive outing Everything Everywhere All at Once, which makes me believe you can expect to see this up for Oscar contention next year.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

What movies have you seen recently?
About to see Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Full disclosure…..huge monstrous fan of the Original Trilogy and did enjoy The Crystal Skull (was not nearly up to the standard of Raiders and Last Crusade).
I am excited to send off Harrison Ford who was my action hero. Han Solo and Indiana Jones was my childhood.
Will report back tonight my honest thoughts.
I have zero clue on anything. I am unspoiled and only saw the trailer and made sure I read nothing on the plot, any reviews….nuttin.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Well my wife and I loved the new Indiana Jones movie.
Great story….great action, humor, Harrison Ford was on point as a much older Indy.
This was more of a throwback to the first three films (especially Crusade).
We loved it.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I thought the de-aging CGI in the beginning was some of the best I’ve seen in a movie or show so far. The scene where he was talking about Mutt really hit me too, I thought Harrison Ford’s acting was great there.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Yes!!! The de-aging CGI was fantastic. Harrison really killed it as Indy yet again. And his new female sidekick (god daughter) was outstanding as well.
Just a great summer action adventure movie. Old school top to bottom.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Joy Ride
Starting with positives, this is a comedy that's funny (which I can't say about all comedies, and I mean I laughed hard at certain moments too), as a raunchy comedy it does more so based on lines/situations than it does on a visual front, the pacing never drags, it checks off emotional and conflict boxes, it brings up topics without getting preachy about them, and it can appeal to a larger demographic than perceived.
The positives outweigh the negatives, but this movie also does have negatives. The comedy isn't necessarily clever, but rather it's just funny because it's funny. In fact, most of it is packed in the middle act of the film, whereas the last act focuses more on story resolution (which I'll get to) and the beginning for me was comedy that didn't hit as well, but that makes sense because I didn't yet know the characters or situation, and instead was just meant to set the tone (and without it the middle act would've felt out of place with its comedy).
This also has a very unfocused story. I know some people won't care as long as it makes you laugh, and I understand that. However, because the final act leaves out a lot of comedy for the sake of its story resolution, to say it delivers on that aspect is iffy because the entire story lacks focus. One could say it is character-driven, but that middle act really begs to differ. If you read an elevator pitch for this film, it's going to leave out a lot of plot elements that it tried to throw into the mix. Its title can be taken multiple ways, but isn't fully accurate in any one of those ways. It felt like it went for comedy first and foremost, and other aspects were either afterthoughts or compilations of other stories thrown into this one. They're all there, but it leads to lack of focus. There was even a joke that contradicted a huge plot point in the film, but because it happened before the plot revelation people might forget about it. Characters are also one-note, which can work for comedies and it works for this one, but it is worth noting.
Like I said, the positives outweigh the negatives and I really did enjoy myself with this flick. It is a hoot and I'm glad that this summer is getting some comedies in theaters. I recommend it, but comedies are largely subjective and I think this movie lives or dies based on how funny it is to you, because I don't think the story or characters make up for it as much even though they try and throw those elements in (to some success even, but not as a whole and not enough to make up for not laughing).Last edited by Blzer; 07-08-2023, 02:13 PM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment
