I wanted to watch Contagion with my wife last night but it was sold out. We settled for Columbiana. It was a fun movie with lots of action. There was a lot of over the top and far fetched events going on but the thing that had me interested most was the sight of Zoe.

            You would!

Nah, seriously, whatever it is, I guess I'm just in the 10% that didn't agree with it. It's a weird place to be. Usually not on the wrong end of the audience's overwhelming thoughts behind a film.

I do agree with what most people liked about it though: style, music, mood, direction. All that stuff was great.

So I watched Vantage Point last night and that made me feel better. (Not that it was great or anything).

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I love that its hard to pin-point exactly what I like. All the parts are wonderful and it is uncanny how many ****ing film trademarks it was hitting on that actually resonant not only because of the pop culture references, but because there's tangible nostalgia in those stagings. On an individual basis, I felt the parts were great, but somehow the sum of them is still slightly greater because it just all meshes so well and in ways that are completely not expected. That is probably the biggest love I have for this film. There are major twists and discoveries going on and advanced in really non-expected ways, but it is never jarring or takes you out the experience. Its just another Ah Snap moment in a film that is basically a string of scenes of those moments. The way it built a Risky Business meets 16 Candles romance, but turning that on its head and substituting the quirky flirtatiousness banter for long, palpable silence and tension is amazing. Its referencing all this **** and hitting the very essence of them all, but managing to do it in a way that is almost completely opposite.

I really cannot wait to see it again.

Captain America. Collectors have to forget the original storyline. I think 2 Cap movies leading up to the Avengers would have done it more justice. Regardless, overall good comic book yarn. Tommy Lee was a great fit! Hayley Atwell is pretty easy on the eyes too!

                      Ugh.

I knew there was a movie I forgot to write about that I just saw within the last couple of days, I just couldn't remember what it was.

                      127 Hours

Like The Prestige and The Illusionist, this movie released around the same time as Buried, and although it provided a similar theme, it had a completely different outlook and is difficult to make a comparison to (one is also a real life story).

Unlike Buried, Danny Boyle went out of his way to tell a character-driven story, rather than a plot-driven story. In other words, the movie doesn't just "stay in the coffin" like Buried does (a movie that uses zero flashbacks, any prelude, or any scenes outside of where the victim is trapped). Boyle shows Ralston's delusions through the ordeal, and uses the landscape to create events and altruistic visions that couldn't otherwise be brought out if you were simply "there." In some ways, the vivacity of colors chosen and camera angles used were an artistically valuable thing, but if you wanted to go into this one and experience claustrophobia like Buried, this isn't quite that kind of film.

Yet, if you know the actual end result of Aron Ralston's fate and what happened after 127 Hours, I don't really know if this film is worth watching. The 93 minutes sure seem to drag. It's nobody's fault, since you can't do much in a movie when your arm is pinned by a boulder and you're all by your lonesome.

I've heard comparisons with Into the Wild, and aside from the character drive and revelation(s), that comparison simply does not exist. Into the Wild is a great film. This is just... there.

I don't see where the Best Picture nods came from, honestly.

I actually sat down and watched "Deliverance" from start to finish for the first time ever last night. Seen a few of the famous clips over the years and heard people reciting lines, but I had never actually sat down and watched the whole thing. It was...uh...interesting.

Yeah. Paranoid is an understatement when describing this movie.

I watched The Conspirator tonight on blu-ray and really enjoyed it. Having an interest in the civil war era I knew the outcome before hand but I enjoyed how it played out.

Thanks to a recommendation from this thread I watched Leon the Professional last night. Absolutely loved it!

Jean Reno was a badass, 15 year old (i think she was 15 irl but not 100% sure) Natalie Portman gave a great performance (probably the best Portman performance I have seen to be honest) and Gary Oldman always makes a great phycho bad guy. There were parts of it (like the relationship between Matilda and Leon) that was a bit confronting or kinda off putting but the movie did a great job of keeping the tension in the action sequences and the story while being pretty simple was pretty compelling.

                                A solid 8.5/10 from me.
