snowed today so good excuse to catch up on some movies.

Bait 3d. decent horror movie. CGI was OK.

Piranha 3d. Loved it. Cheesy and predictable. David Hasselhof made it worth the price of admission.

Chronicles of Narnia 3d. It was good but ran way too long for my taste.

I don't buy into all these types of movies being labeled as "chick flicks". Good storyline and good acting all around. Take your wife, girlfriend, significant other, etc to see this. Not bad at all.
Great...Well looks like i might as well watch it with the GF when it comes out to DVD. She's been telling me how much she wants to see it. If the thriller aspects are good and you seemed to enjoy it then I guess I can live with it too

Finally watched Horrible Bosses and Hall Pass. Had a lot of Jason Sudeikis in one day.

I thought Horrible Bosses was great. Kevin Spacey hasn't found a way to disappoint me ever. Charlie Day, Jason Bateman and Sudeikis were great complimentary characters.

Jamie Foxx, to me, felt a bit out of place. I much rather see him do more serious roles as I don't think he had anything good comedically to add to the film.

Story was tight. Several funny moments. Really enjoyed it.

Hall Pass was below average. This was more a chick flick covered in some comedic moments but it's the story that actually suffers.

I think what kills the story mostly is the lack of actual fun during the portion of the film dedicated to there being a lot of fun.

The guys have a hall pass and

The main characters only half develop. One

The story didn't do it for me. There weren't enough funny moments. Disappointing film.

Finally saw Skyfall with my pops thus continuing the streak of us seeing every Bond film together. Sadly we couldn't see it in the theater but bluray works just as well.

I love the callback with the Aston Martin halfway through. I wasn't fond of how Bardem played the villain though. Wasn't great in his role as he usually is.

Indie comedy-rama, i guess (available to stream on Netflix) - pretty good movie, i liked the cast. Really liked Aubrey Plaza in it, i'm a new fan ...will have to watch more Parks N Recreation.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Well time for that little known movie I was telling you guys about last time. I think I had said it was from 1933 but actually it's from '38. ANYWAYS....

Does it deserve to stay in the ashcan of history or was it a hidden gem? I vote the latter

              Federal Man-Hunt (1938)

              Plot Summary:

By a daring ruse and inside help, Pete Rennick, a noted criminal behind bars on federal charges, escapes from the prison, and all of the law-agencies and local police are out to catch him with roadblocks and every car searched, but the escapee gets away. Bill Hasford, a private detective, investigating a racket finds it leads to the wanted man, and has the biggest adventure of his career
Gotta love it when IMDB users give a solid summary without spoilers though I will let you in on the racket that Hasford is working on and that's a wildcat bus service. It all ties in pretty well.

This movie is populated by actors I don't even know and it's pretty much a B Film however being a B Picture back then wasn't a mark of quality in those days. In fact, a lot of very good, entertaining flicks were B grade and in some cases more entertaining then the A grade stuff. The movie is directed by Nick Grinde who's probably best known today for directing Hitler - Dead of Alive (1942). Here he presents a tightly plotted and fast moving crime flick that combines the manhunt and hostage themes as a bunch of innocent people get caught up in Rennick's flight from justice.

The acting is generally pretty good and I really enjoyed the performances of the two leads who played Hasford and Ann Lawrence. (Rennick's girl who unwittingly helped to obtain his share of the dough from his last job) Even the other passengers in the wildcat bus are played well which is a relief as sometimes these kind of characters can be made to be buffoons or the acting is a bit over the top.

The movie surprisingly doesn't have many plot holes and while it pretty much goes according to how you'd expect it to, the execution is such that this is a lean and fast flick that keeps your attention. The closest thing to a loophole in the plot I can find is when the driver of the wildcat bus drives away from the gas station with Hasford running after it. The next scene he's suddenly back in the car riding with everyone. The movie is originally 64 minutes and the copy I watched was just a touch over 61 so maybe there was something excised.

The climax to the film is pretty gripping what with Hasford having to drive Rennick and his boss (who happens to also run the wildcat bus line) to a plane so they can escape to Mexico.

All things being equal this was a pretty fun little film and I had fun with it. I give this a sold 2 stars.

NEXT UP: Normally i'd jump back to my current John Carpenter project but I can't for the next little while so i'll probably watch another classic Hollywood era film or two to fill in the time.

With a lesser cast this would've been a massive failure. Gets kinda meta at points. Decent fun.

                Sinister

In the top 5 of recent horror movies. Felt like it just short of being a classic. I got worried for a few minutes they were going to blow it and it'd turn into something awful.

I really liked Sinister as well, but like you feel it falls short in an area or two.

7 Psychopaths had me really excited because it was made by the same guy that made the wonderful In Bruges and as you say it has a stellar cast. I will still probably check it out sometime.

                    Argo

Early on someone says "The Soviets wouldn't put up with this ****. They would've invaded" and then I kinda wanted to see that movie instead. Though about 3 scenes later I realized this is actually a comedy and it was one joke from being one of the funniest movies ever. (See spoiler.) I know it looks all drama like but really there's something hilarious in every scene. Good show overall. There's less comedy in the second hour but it's still there.

Finally got around to 'Looper'. That was a great ride! JGL is so versatile it's not even funny, and Willis was quite good. Really enjoyed the story and thank you for not getting too twisted up on the time travel stuff.

Yes, I believe I went without mentioning her in my impressions. It took me a few minutes to recognize it was her, because I first dismissed the actress for being too old to be playing such a young, beautiful looking southern American female. Wow, she's really got it going though!

Talk about opening a horror movie right on the first shot! It never really drops off from there as far as a movie standpoint, but I wish the overall payoff was a bit greater. However, not too many horror films in recent memory keep a serious, dark, consistent tone anymore. This one was able to do that and not have to become too "Hollywood," or whatever it is one would say about it. It was a bit cryptic like The Ring, which to me is always a good thing. Jump scares were effective for being few and far between, but the moments themselves were often sub-par. It was a film that relied more on its creepy atmosphere than build-ups or jump-scares, which I appreciated. But as I implied, its strength was in its best portions, and its worst portions could have been more strengthened. Good to see Ethan Hawke on screen again; he carries solitary scenes pretty well.

                                I'll make this short:

                                The Public Defender (1931)

                                Plot Summary:

Rich playboy Pike Winslow dons the mantle of 'The Reckoner', a mysterious avenger, when he learns that his lady friend Barbara Gerry's father has been framed in a bank embezzlement scandal. Using meticulous planning and split-second timing, Pike, along with his associates, the erudite 'Professor' and tough-guy scrapper 'Doc', attempt to find proof that will clear Gerry and identify the real culprits.
Bleh, I couldn't really get into this one. Richard Dix played Pike and I just didn't think he pulled off the rich playboy role the right way. There was also a weird homosexual vibe I was getting from the trio of Pike, the "Professor" (Boris Karloff just on the cusp of stardom with Frankenstein) and "Doc". The story was serviceable and the acting wasn't bad but again I just couldn't get into it.

I guess I was expecting something a little more pulpier in the vein of The Shadow or something like that.

I give this 1 star out of 4.

Next up: another 30s flick but this time with one of my favorite actors of Old Hollywood in William Powell. The flick is Lawyer Man (1932).
