Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The definitive film of the 90's, quite possibly. Glad you liked it! I didn't quite know what the hell to make of it on first viewing. I saw it near release and it was a shock to me; I didn't know if I should laugh or not. Ever since then, I laugh my *** off at all the dark humor.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I'd put Shawshank Redemption in there as well. That movie encapsulated a lot of the good film making of the decade. You are right though that Pulp Fiction embodies the feeling and the attitudes of the decade's cultural zeitgeist so I agree that it's THE '90s film.

I would also add Singles, but I have not seen that one yet.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
'Singles' is a 'moment in time' film. I happen to really like it because I was in Seattle and the same age range as the characters. I was also really loving the Seattle music scene and that the film is actually shot in SEATTLE....not freakin' Vancouver, BC (I submit '50/50' and 'Love Happens' as two shining examples of Seacouver). Hell, it's worth watching just for the scene with the bees nature special on tv. LOLGO 'HAWKS!

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I'll still take Reality Bites over Singles, but once again, that comes down to being closer to that age range. Reality Bites was more of an impact to me.Through music, you can live forever...TEAMS: San Diego Chargers, San Diego Padres, Notre Dame Fighting IrishComment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Don't mind me fellas....
Lawyer Man (1932)
Plot Summary:
Idealistic attorney Anton Adam (William Powell) makes headlines when he successfully prosecutes a prominent New York racketeer/political boss named Gilmurry. (David Landau) Adam's sudden renown attracts the attention of high-profile legal eagle Granville Bentley, (Alan Dinehart) who asks Adam to become a partner in his law firm. But Adam's rising career takes a nosedive when he's framed by Gilmurry and a sexy actress in a trumped-up breach of promise suit. The only constant in Adam's life is the loyalty and unrequited love of his secretary Olga. (Joan Blondell)
This movie seemed like it was original intended for James Cagney as William Powell is too smooth and upper crust to be a lower east side lawyer but despite the miscasting he's clearly the star of the show and does a great job with his character. You ALMOST believe he was brought up in the Lower East Side but alas as I said he's just too smooth of an actor. That being said he's a force of nature in this one and has some great scenes like the one where he's totally washed up and makes a speech to his secretary Olga about having to get down and dirty and actually BE a shyster to get back at those who brought him down.
In a lot of ways this movie would be pretty good to remake today with some fine tuning because in this movie the dialogue and general attitude is just a bit too breezy and light hearted. I do like the fact that Powell does get his revenge but it's done in such a light way that it robs the film of any edge. Joan Blondell is excellent as the faithful secretary and she gets some good lines in this flick. David Landau was pretty good in his role but it's robbed of any toughness with his somewhat nice guy demeanor. In a more contemporary film Powell would've been "rubbed out" early on.
So yeah, pretty good movie that didn't quite have the right tone. I think if Cagney had taken the role there'd be more of a tougher edge to it and perhaps it's why he probably turned down the role. (if he was offered it in the 1st place)
Good flick though 2 1/2 stars out of 4.
Next up: Another '30s flick that's clearly a B film but has Glenda Farell and Lyle Talbot involved so should be interesting. 1936's The Law in Her Hands.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
