Looking forward to watching Captain Marvel 20 years from now and seeing what all the fuzz was about. It better not be like the live action remake of the Beauty & the Beast.

      Wrath of Man

Thought this was a really good action/suspense flick. Enjoyed it quite a bit. Really hard to go wrong with Statham and it was a solid cast overall.

        Continuing the Marvel theme ...

        Black Widow
Saw this in the theater last week. First time in the theater since late 2019 for me. I really enjoyed it and thought it was one of the better Marvel flicks. Although, in typical MCU fashion, the villains were pretty weak.

        Iron Man 2
Rewatched this last night for the first time in years. It was better than I remembered.

          Black Widow

Enjoyed this tremendously. Thought it was very funny and the action was typical for Marvel. Florence Pugh as Yelena was comedic gold lol. Had me cracking up the whole movie. It was a long wait but it still worked just fine for me.

            Space Jam 2.

We watched this last night, it was enjoyable. Was the acting bad? Sure but take it for what it is. I thought it was fine.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Inception (4/5), Paprika (4/5): First time watching Inception, was bullied into making it a double feature with Paprika by a friend who saw it years ago and always brings it up whenever Inception is brought up. Paprika, out in 06, is an anime movie about a doctor who uses a device to access her patient's dreams in order to help with their therapy. Is it better than Inception? Probably not. The animation means they can play a lot more with the dreams concept which kinda disappointed me in Inception even though it was exactly the point that the dreams are supposed to feel real, I feel like it defeats the purpose of using dreams to not go all the way with it. I did think it was a really good movie, the love angle kinda came out of nowhere a little but I liked the way everything came together. It's also an hour shorter than Inception which I appreciate.

Inception...I really liked this movie, and were a couple of things different, I would've loved it. I feel like so much of the movie is exposition as to how to navigate the dream space, and because of that you really need to be interested in the mechanics of entering dreams, and timing kicks, and I didn't care about any of that ****. Tom Hardy, the hallway fight scene where JGL is floating, the one dream-like sequence where Leo shows Ariadne the explosions and the city turning on itself, all great. The James Bond snow action sequence I didn't care for (and I'm a huge Bond guy), a lot of the action honestly was meh to me. I wanted this to be Memento with a bigger budget, which it kinda is, with the end of the stories coming down to basically choosing your own reality, but there's all this action that did very little for me. If he could've cut down a half hour of this, and just focused all on Leo and Mal, this might've been my favorite movie ever. As it was, I just felt like it was doing too much. I wonder how long a cut that gets rid of all of the dream world explanations would be. Also, the constant shots of the van falling had the exact opposite effect I thought it was supposed to. We all understand how fast a van would fall into water, I didn't need to see it every few minutes. Obviously it's a movie and the good guys are going to win, but it was beyond obvious nothing was going to happen with the van until they were finished, just seemed like a waste to have to keep seeing it fall in slow motion.

Batman Begins (5/5): Not much to say, I just love it. I noticed this time that the Batman voice did not bother me in this as much as it does in the later movies.

Dunkirk (4/5): Not sure I've been this happy to be a physical media person since...Interstellar maybe? What an experience. The scene where the bombers are approaching and you just hear the sound build up...incredible. The one thing I will say about this and Inception, is I think Hans was a little unhinged. There are some scenes in both of these movies that I thought would benefit from silence and just letting the moment sit, and you're hearing these blaring orchestral beats. I enjoyed it, and when the music hits it does what its supposed to generally, but it can be overbearing. The scene that comes to mind is when the British leader is staring off into the distance and looks into his binoculars before he recognizes the civilian fleet. You would've thought he spotted Jaws the way the music was building.

The Dark Knight (5/5): Obviously a masterpiece. That being said I have a lot of nitpicks in this movie having seen it so many times. It's long as hell, it's good so it justifies it as well as it can, but in a post WW 1984 world, I don't want to see any 2 and a half hour superhero movies unless you're trying to wrap up a decade worth of stuff like End Game. The whole time I was watching the tweet kept popping up in my head that said something like "Joker threatening me with Maggie Gyllenhall? Send the whole city up in flames", I don't really like her in this. I think they should've killed Rachel in Begins. Watching this again, you've got Gordon with his morals on one end, Rachel with hers, Harvey with his, Alfred with his...I just don't feel like Batman's is front and center in this, it feels like the Tomb Raider video games where the first game is Tomb Raider, then the second is Rise of the Tomb Raider, and you're like wait is she the Tomb Raider yet or not? I feel like the decision to save Rachel over Harvey doesn't feel like Batman, and should've been handled in Begins. I'm adjusting my head canon so that Batman Begins is a 4 hour movie combining Begins and TDK, and Rises doesn't exist. It's a 10/5 movie. Underrated scene: Batman catching Maroni in the club. Maroni's sitting there with his girl, she says "can we go somewhere we can hear each other" and he says "what makes you think I want to hear you talk", hysterical. Then Batman swoops in and starts beating people up in this nightclub, I like to think he paid the cover, walked in the front, and was just on the floor dancing for a few minutes casing the place while no one noticed.

I've been out on Marvel since End Game but it has nothing to do with "social justice." The guy in that video just seems really bitter. He needs to go touch some grass or something. Black Panther was a great movie and the lack of criticism has nothing to do with the fact that the main characters were all black. I just find it really ironic this guy is calling anyone an idiot.

I've just got a lot of comic movie fatigue. I don't spend any time slandering them but I can't keep up with all of these Disney+ shows and movies.

I'll probably break my drought with the new Venom though just because I feel like I can enjoy it separately.

The first movie in the Hunger Games trilogy is just fantastic movie. Minimal to zero profanity, very intense moments, several sociological tones that could be argued...every time I watch it grows higher on my top list of movies.

It was good. I enjoy it much more than Catching Fire, which just had a lot more overall problems.

Mockingjay: Part 1 was terrible and worthless (on its own). I still have yet to see Mockingjay: Part 2.

You hear "bitter". I hear "realist". But that will never fly here from the bit I've seen. He talks about the important elements good movies have had and need (he's got some great videos about the general concepts of the need for real villains and the open letter to Hollywood video is tremendous. Check it out -- well, for you open-minded folks here, anyway). It's like when Star Trek: The Motion Picture first came out. Great anticipation / huge disappointment. Why? The story sucked, plain and simple.

If you can't see the direction Marvel is going a la the comic books, well, then, enjoy your female Iron Man, female Thor, female Hulk, female Capt. Marvel & the Marvel-ettes (remember, male originally), female Asgard CEO, female Loki, female Ancient One, female Hawkeye, etc., etc. (and guess who the hero of the 1st MCU F.F. is going to be.) Unlike the Critical Drinker, I won't be wasting my time.

P.S. It's not that The Black Panther was a "great" movie, you just liked it, or you believe you have to say that.

So if you won’t be wasting your time with the non-white male centric future of the MCU, that means you won’t be wasting your time posting about your distaste and disdain for the upcoming movies anymore either, right?

You are implying that people here are not being open minded while simultaneously refusing to have an open mind about the possibility that COMPLETELY FICTIONAL superhero characters might be re-imagined as female characters.

I was watching the new Space Jam with my kids the other day and when they asked to rewatch it the next day one of them asked “Dad can we watch Space Jam again but only the basketball part?”

The point I am trying to make with that example is that these movies are still made with a childlike imagination in mind. If my kids do not even care enough for the half-baked dialogue in a Space Jam movie, they are not going to care about a comic book movie trying to be as nuanced as a Scorsese or Tarantino flick.

This is starting to remind me of people crying about the possibility of 007 being cast as a female like all the other old movies/books still did not exist. I do not want to insult anyone, so I do not mind agreeing to disagree. I also do not want to turn this thread on its head, but this just comes off as condescending. There is no reason to act like everyone’s childhood is in jeopardy because Marvel tries something different.

It's these companies banking on the gamble that they'll make the money on what was a sure thing and re-branding it. You either buy it, or you don't. I don't because it's lazy imagination and it's in keeping with what he said in his commentary about the value of character development and original story-telling.

                            Good luck.

To your credit, this is a more measured follow-up to those posts than I was expecting.

The reality though is you are bought into largely manufactured outrage. Perhaps you should look up all the different Captain Marvels, or when She-Hulk first appeared or maybe the time Loki in mythology turned into a horse, got pregnant and gave birth to Odin's steed... but we're going to fuss over him being female? There's a point to be made with The Ancient One, but it's lost in the other nonsense.

Regardless, let's get back to talking about the movies we've seen recently and less on selling manufactured outrage or telling other people why they have to say they like a movie.

He didn't really offer any subjective points or analysis, though. So not sure where "realist" is applicable especially when much of it is belittling Brie Larson for no reason whatsoever.
