    The Villainess

A solid 8 out of 10. Has a great POV sequence right at the begining that is just mindblowing. The story might now be the pinacle of originality, but, the execution is flawless.

      Jurassic World Dominion:

It wasn't as good as the first 2, but I liked how it felt like 2 stories going on at once. It was nice to have the old cast back for it too, even if most of their stuff was separate from the rest.

The first movie was definitely the best of the 3. But JW 2 and 3 were better than Jurassic park 2 and 3.

        The Grey Man

        Very not good.

It could have been good. In fact I was very interested in it.

But one moment ruined it, utterly, and completely.

And you'd enjoy his role in the movie (can't recall the title) where he's one of the journalists who do the Nixon interviews

                Smile

I am a fan of horror movies and am always trying to find the next one that will push the envelope in some sort of way, whether it is by fright, gore, or both. The Ring is my favorite horror movie, and that film had a lasting impact on me when I first saw it at fourteen years old. I hadn't ever seen anything like it, and it left me cold and unnerved in a way that I couldn't describe or shake. Another movie that came from my nightmares and took on some similar beats was It Follows (though significantly less scary), and was again another win for the "passing on the curse" genre. Smile takes inspiration from these two movies heavily while making it its own, but I'll say right now that if this was the movie that came out in 2002 instead of The Ring, this could have been my fearmonger growing up.

Full disclosure: for me, Smile is not The Ring. What ended up making The Ring so impactful was its brooding atmosphere. The cinematography, music, and Seattle setting all oozed with somberness, and combined with its slow-burn pace it's a win that has yet to be overcome in my eyes. Smile has great cinematography and throws in a creative score at times, but is not a melancholic experience. Even still, it does enough within that for the first time in a while, images burned in my head. I was thinking about the movie outside of the movie driving home and laying down that night. I braced myself turning corners in my house hallway. They did right in a lot of ways.

Smile is filled with jump scares. If I heard that going in, I would feel a little dismayed by that. To that effect as well, I do wish they eliminated many of them, because this movie works well on its own merit. However, the jump scares in this movie are good. They are effective and they can come when least expected. I don't often get startled by them, but they caught me off-guard a couple of times where I kind of just said: "Okay, that was good" in my seat. Like I said though, I could've gone without as many as they did, and it is a positive to say that this movie didn't need that as a crutch. It was legitimately scary on its own.

What really sells the horror in this movie is the performance by the lead actress, Sosie Bacon. Her genuine emotions of dread and petrification encompass many scenes, and there really aren't any scenes without her so you embody the psychosis that her character undergoes throughout the film. It's her acting that really sells this movie's horror. Not all of the acting from everyone else is great; some were serviceable but others were notably inferior. Plus, there I think there were some moments where characters... I wouldn't say overact, but perhaps overreact to certain situations. This came from both the good and poor actors alike, so it seemed more like a directorial decision that I didn't always agree with. The script also seemed to drop too many unneeded F-bombs at times, as if emotion couldn't have been conveyed without it.

The internal struggle that each character affected by the curse had made for an [although weak] arguable case about whether there was an actual possession or whether they were suffering from mental illness. I liked a lot of the themes they presented around the concept of smiling as well. Unlike a movie like Truth or Dare where smiling was just the gimmick, here it seems to have more underlying meanings behind it. Plus, it's just creepy. Most visuals here felt like they were of the practical effects variety too, which really helped it all keep immersive. The writing was well-conceived with this, though. One story element was completely dropped/forgotten and it was very noticeable, but one could perhaps argue it was replaced with another story element as well. Some of the middle act of the film slows a bit as details unravel, but that could be more because I've seen other films like it and am already privy to what kinds of rules we're supposed to be following the rest of the way. I was fine with it, but it also didn't keep me on edge the entire time during that moment too.

Anyway, this was yet another win for the horror genre this year. I'm glad that I was able to go in this one blind, and I'm glad to have yet another movie that could get me to latch onto me well after I had left the theater. It wasn't a fantastic movie for me, but it certainly did its job.

Such a classic. I'm not sure if it's so bad that it's good, or it's just that good.

Too bad we never got any sort of cameos from the old cast, especially since the movie does take place in the same town as the original, so it wouldn't be too unrealistic to have them (though the producers seemed to be against it, saying that a small cameo from the original cast wouldn't be worth it given that they would be main characters in the first only to be reduced to a cameo in the 2nd)

It was funny seeing the witches who were from hundreds of years ago, who know the modern world to be the 90s, suddenly popping up in the 2022 world not knowing what's happening (replacing the old vacuum cleaner they turned into a broom and used a Swiffer instead, and using a robot vacuum too).

I liked the ending the most. Tied in everything perfectly and had things almost at peace with Winifred.

I thought it was a very fun, action packed movie. Some good dialogue, good story. I liked it a lot. Nothing too much to add, it was a typical super hero movie, but with the Black Adam storyline.

                            8/10.
