Re: Hip hop fans: This is painful to listen to.

It's because he painted himself as some kind of hip-hop savior here to save the day from woman-hating money-hungry hip-hop. If you come at people with some supposedly enlightened perspective talking about "real hip-hop" and "being conscious", it tends to annoy people when you turn around and do some hokey Gap or Coke commercial (all the while talking about how real and conscious you are... meanwhile, those companies are killing union workers in South America and filling their factories with exploited sweatshop labor in Malaysia)... Making a song with a Disney-supported pop music product like the Jonas Brothers is just a cherry on top of a bull**** sundae that Common has been serving up since he nearly lost his major label deal after Electric Circus.

Just kinda undermines your credibility and what you were trying to paint yourself as for the last 10 years. I can't take anything Common does seriously and haven't for quite some time now... if he was still making good music I'd probably overlook my distaste for the contrived and transparent image he worked so hard to create since "Resurrection", but his ****'s been garbage since LWFC as far as I'm concerned so it's not worth my time. Every time I see dude on TV selling some bull**** or talking seriously about his music these days, I just laugh... there was some thing where he was hyping his last ****brick of an album and I was just laughing hysterically at how ridiculous he sounded trying to sell it as something authentic.

If it was Luda, T-Pain, or someone who has already pimped themselves out for any guest verse that offers them enough money, I wouldn't even blink an eye at this. When you put yourself into a box expecting to profit from it and it doesn't entirely pan out, it's hard to get out without looking like a hypocrite or a dick... that's what Com's dealing with right now, and he looks like both. If he hasn't spent all that time posturing as some next-level conscious guy, nobody would care that he was selling his *** for this kind of thing.

All Rappers say one thing and then turn around and do the complete opposite though. Common's no different then any of the other Rappers that "preach this and that to the masses and then go against what they preach. That's how the game works and goes most of the time unfortunately.

I guess it's analogous to rappers talking about killing people and then never doing anything haha... exact opposite, but same difference in the end... posturing as something you're not.

Just irritates me because I've met so many hip-hop fans who say "Oh, I don't like that gangster or clubby stuff, but I LOVE conscious hip-hop like Common" then I see dude shilling for Gap or playing with the Jonas Brothers... just rubs me the wrong way every time. I probably hate Common's fans more than him really haha...

I can't believe anyone is naive enough to take Common seriously enough to be up in arms about a Jonas Brothers collaboration. Give me a break. Grow up. It's just pop music.

Forget the the fact that Common has classics like "I Used To Love H.E.R.", "Resurrection", etc. People forget Com was a laughingstock in the game a short time ago when he dropped Electric Circus. He then went out of his way to bring him self back and be relevant with people who love hip hop as an artform when he got with Kanye for Be and Finding Forever. Then he drops UMC and this nonsense? For the people wondering why the OP is making a big deal about this, those are the most solid reasons right there. Why go through all the drama to drop the heat he did only to go "crazy" again and drop some straight trash?

It's a rare thing to find anyone, much less a celebrity who doesn't contradict themselves from time to time. I got no qualms with the man getting his money, and I have to say it doesn't make me think any less of his previous work.

Shameful. This is why I always bump 90's tracks now for the most part. Glory days are gone.

I guess I can believe it. It always shocks me when hip hop "works" on people though. I understand bobbing your head to a catchy beat and appreciating the clever turn of phrase here and there. I even understand the sophomoric, visceral joy of hearing an idiot-or a man pretending to be an idiot--rhyme about his endless fascination with women drugs and money.

What I don't get is when people actually take the foolish leap towards believing these mainstream rappers or taking them seriously. If you're 16 and below, sure. Anyone over the age of 20 that buys this nonsense needs to have their head checked.

It's sad to see Common end up here after such a promising beginning to his career. But it's not like it really surprises me - Common hasn't been good since he was Common Sense.

I'm too busy listening to the new Mos Def album to even worry about some Jonas Brothers garbage. As far as Common goes, I'll occasionally pull out "Resurrection" and listen to some great hip-hop, but past there, he's just another sub-standard mainstream MC.
