Re: Michael Jackson has passed away
Watched the whole thing, but man when his daughter spoke I just broke down like a little girl. I get teary eyed in sad movies and what not, but man I was literally crying today.
So many people see MJ as a pedophile/weirdo, and I'm not saying he was 100% innocent, but his daughter really humanized him for once. Even if he was an absolute nobody, seeing someone's daughter crying for her father standing in front of her father's casket is an extremely emotional thing to witness. That was probably the most emotional thing I have ever seen on television...no joke. And I was bummed about MJ's death, but wasn't crying for days like a lot of these diehard fans.
Hopefully these kids get put in good hands and aren't taken advantage of like MJ was as a kid.Comment

Now here are my main questions of the day
1. How did Michael Jackson open up the doors for late night talk shows
2. How did Michael Jackson make Magic Johnson a better point guard
3. I thought Jackie Robinson opened up the door for players such as Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson but i guess it was Michael JacksonComment

Obviously Jackson supporters might exaggerate his cultural influence due to their emotions, but he did break down a lot of racial barriers. His talent was so undeniable that so many people, were for once, gravitated to a black man.
And unlike actors, or athletes, Jackson created music. A medium that could be listened to any time of the day. Music can bring back so many memories and create help create timelines for people who listened to his music, think of weddings/h.s. dances/ dates. This is why so many people have been devastated by his sudden death. Add all the philanthropy work he did over the years and you can see why he was so beloved across the world.Comment

Re: Michael Jackson has passed away
Michael Jackson made it more socially acceptable to support a entertaining black man. Others before MJ, pressed the issue, opened the civil right door/discussion, but Jackson drew support with his music. He did not ask people to listen to him or respect him, they were drawn to his talent. And he was one of the biggest entertainers of all time, the first minority.

Re: Michael Jackson has passed away
the fact is that Jackson was found innocent of every criminal charge in a court of law. He has not been found guilty of one single thing
To all the people who want to cite a civil settlement as an admission of guilt, do you realize how preposterous that is? The burden in a civil case is by a preponderance of the evidence, i.e. a very low and arbitrary burden by most accounts. Settlements in civil court are almost exclusively based on a cost/benefit analysis, and rarely have anything to do with guilt/innocence. You settle b/c it makes financial sense considering the low threshold in civil cases
Hell, if someone KNEW they could have proved in a civil court that MJ molested their child, they wouldn't have settled for 20 million. Refusing the settlement offer and giving that to a jury would have resulted in an exponentially higher verdict. Think about that.
The risk of being WRONGLY convicted of something in a civil court is infinitely higher than in criminal court. Why is this concept so difficult to grasp for some? Jackson could have spent his entire fortune defending his reputation in civil court, and all it would take is a bunch of self-righteous people on a jury to convict him simply b/c they think he's guilty, evidence be damned. Take 12 of the people on this thread that just call him a pedophile for no good reason other than media/tabloid sensationalism. They have literally nothing to go on, but their mind is made up.
btw, here is a blurb on the parents in the allegations in 2005. They sound really trustworthy. The mother also went to visit the attorney that represented the kid in 1993 settlement before she went to the police to report that her child was molested. Sound money hungry to you?
"In August 1998 the Arvizo family was detained on a shoplifting charge at a J. C. Penney department store in West Covina, California. According to J. C. Penney, Gavin and Star Arvizo were sent out of the store by their father with an armload of stolen clothes, the family was detained and Janet started a "scuffle" with security officers. The shoplifting charge was dropped, but Janet filed a lawsuit for $3 million, saying that when she was detained she was "viciously beaten" by three security officers, one of whom was female. The psychiatrist hired by J. C. Penney to evaluate Janet Arvizo found her to have rehearsed her children into supporting her story and to be both "delusional" and "depressed," although Janet's own doctor found her to be only the latter. More than two years after the original alleged incident Janet added a further charge that one of the male officers had "sexually fondled" her breasts and pelvis area for "up to seven minutes". Ultimately the department store settled out of court with the family for $137,000."
GREAT post.
The family mentioned above are the lowest form of people on earth. It's sad his rep took such a hit from people of their calibre.
RIP MJ.Comment

So, why don't you ask Magic? If Magic said it himself, then it's entirely non debatable. Obviously Magic got something from their time together / friendship.Comment

2. I don't know how MJ made Magic a better point guard. Maybe he was complimenting his grace or how he strived to be the best at what he did...as a matter of fact, I think that's what Magic's reasoning was.
3. Jackie Robinson was a trailblazer no doubt, but MJ's transcendence eclipsed every black person before him. If Jackie Robinson was the guy to open the doors, MJ tore down the walls.
Jackie Robinson wasn't accepted when he joined the majors. Even Bill Russell and Jim Brown, who started their careers much later, weren't accepted back then. Like I mentioned earlier, even MJ during the Jackson 5 days and up til Off the Wall was seen as a black artist. Once Thriller dropped, he became colorless.Comment

Re: Michael Jackson has passed away
He gave you reasons why MJ opened the doors for those people. Are they simply not sufficient or you want the answer to be: he didn't?"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Michael Jackson has passed away
I think Diddy said it best at the end of The Game's "Better On The Side".
"People can say what they want to say about you. But, we're gonna remember the miracles you showed us. Through your music, through your dance, through your philanthropy. You are the one that made us realize that we are the world. You are the one that showed us we could moonwalk. You gave us the beat. You gave us the rhythm. You gave us the soul."
