In terms of legitimate rappers (I'm excluding Hammer), he has the 2 highest selling rap albums of all time in terms of actual product moved and each came at the height of Napster and Kazaa.

Is an Icon higher than a Legend or vice versa?

That doesn't mean anything. Album sales is only one part of the story. People latched on to Eminem because he was different. Eventually they got tired of his sophomoric antics. His last album's first week sales didn't even eclipse Lil Wayne, Kanye or T.I.

Snoop is more famous than Eminem, and 2pac is a bigger icon. Eminem doesn't even have a classic album, how can he be an icon?

I believe so. Take the NBA for example. Those top 50 players are considered legends...but as far as icons, there are about 5.

Don't wanna derail this thread, so whats up with Joe claiming that dude is MJ's son? I don't believe thats his son.

I figured because I don't consider Ye a living legend, much less an icon.

Yes, Eminem's worst selling album only sold 600 some thousand copies (higher than TI) to have the biggest opening week of 2009.

When he was at the top, he had an album stay atop the charts for about 2 months and go diamond. He is the highest selling rap artist, and he's did it in four albums in the age of downloading. With mid 90s album sales, MMLP and TES would have sold 15-20 million each.

Kanye isnt any Icon, but Snoop and Eminem might be. I dont know though. You would have to be pretty loose with the term icon to put any of those guys as icons, but I would say Snoop comes the closest.

                btw, "Doggystyle" >>> "Marshal Mathers"

I don't think either of those names are icons at all. I think they are just superstars.

If anything, I would put Diddy as an icon before anybody else in the rap game and that's mostly because he is immediately identified as a label head, show producer, and clothing designer, and that expands across the globe and beyond his brand of music.

But I still feel icky thinking of him as such.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

Me personally, I don't consider rappers as "icons" per se. Especially not in the iconic status that MJ was. At least, not in the Black Community, IMO.

The man is a living icon whether we like it or not.

Besides his work, you look at the impact he's had in terms of fashion. His shoes... man people are out there doing all sorts of outrageous things to make sure they get a pair of Air Yeezy's.

Then the way he dresses [the slim jeans and shades and everything else he wears] also has had a crazy impact on today.

I dunno if there's one specific pop icon but he's definitely got his name up there. So him saying that I can't knock it as being untrue, just doucheish.

The rumors are "Jesus Walks" was written by Rhymefest, 808's was a collab between Consequences, and LR was also "inspired" by Consequences.. and then his last album before 808's was supposedly partly written by Big Sean.

Edit: Looking at Wiki pages, it does indeed seem like he's had a lot of input from others in terms of who has written tracks..

                      Here's Graduation:

                      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graduation_(album)
Jesus Walks being at least partially written by Rhymefest isn't a rumor, he gets royalties from it.

Downloading was not as prevalent in 1999-2000 as it is now. Internet access was not as universal. Internet had very little effect on album sales back then.

For the sake of argument, lets say Eminem did come out in the mid-90s. You really think people would have been rushing to get an Eminem CD? Eminem is not a groundbreaking artist. He just came along at the perfect time with the right person to cosign him. I actually like Eminem, but no way is he a bigger icon than 2pac or even Snoop.

                        No he isn't.
Snoop isn't more famous than Eminem? LMAO. I guess your definition of fame is strictly based on album sales. Snoop has been in the limelight longer than Eminem, Snoop is ALWAYS on TV, Snoop has been in movies, Snoop endorses a bunch of products, and grandmothers who don't listen to rap know who Snoop is. I didn't just start listening to rap in '98 like a lot of people on this board.

Good album, almost flawless lyrically...but not a classic. The subject matter is dated and immature. Maybe 3 classic songs on the whole album (and I'm being generous).

If I had to choose one icon in rap, it would be 2pac. It really shouldn't even be argued.

2Pac is the only dead rapper still making albums. If that doesn't make him iconic I don't know what is. Know one will ever be as loved, hated, and respected than Michael Jackson in this lifetime. IMO........

So have the final toxicology reports come in yet? It seems they have been saying "any day now" for the past two weeks. Looks like that Dr. is in some hot water.

Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show were (I believe) 2 of the only, and maybe the only, rap albums that showed on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. I think that's verification enough that it's a classic.
