Apple can't stand the MS heat

Microsoft: Apple wanted 'Laptop Hunters' ad pulled
    by Steven Musil

It should come as no surprise that Apple isn't a big fan of Microsoft's "Laptop Hunters" ads, but some may be surprised to learn the Mac maker's lawyers reportedly called a senior Microsoft executive and demanded the ads be removed.

The topic of TV ads, which feature prospective buyers comparing prices and features of Apple laptops and Windows-based laptops, came up at the Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans on Wednesday. Kevin Turner, Microsoft's chief operating officer, was at the conference to announce that Microsoft was planning to open its first stores this fall, with at least some of the locations likely to be right near an Apple store.

But the most intriguing part of Turner's speech was when he recounted a telephone call he says he got from Apple's legal department demanding that Microsoft remove the ads. Here's Turner's tale, according to Microsoft's official transcript:
    Quote:
And so we've been running these PC value ads. Just giving people saying, hey, what are you looking to spend? "Oh, I'm looking to spend less than $1,000." Well we'll give you $1,000. Go in and look and see what you can buy. And they come out and they just show them. Those are completely unscripted commercials.

And you know why I know they're working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department saying, hey -- this is a true story -- saying, "Hey, you need to stop running those ads, we lowered our prices." They took like $100 off or something. It was the greatest single phone call in the history that I've ever taken in business. (Applause.)

I did cartwheels down the hallway. At first I said, "Is this a joke? Who are you?" Not understanding what an opportunity. And so we're just going to keep running them and running them and running them.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but it may have good reason to be upset. Since Microsoft launched the ads, which are in response to Apple's "I'm a Mac" ads, there is evidence that the campaign may be radically altering value perceptions of PCs. According to a report in AdAge, BrandIndex says Microsoft's so-called value perception has risen steadily since the campaign began in March, while Apple's has fallen.
I didn't think these would work that well.

Oh this is great. Every time I see those stupid "I'm a mac" commercials I die a little inside. All of that has been restored by the windows commercials

I don't know how they can be pissed off when they have been running the "I'm a Mac" commercials since the beginning of time.

Ironically those PC commercials were made on a Mac. Seriously.

If it drives down prices for both brands, we win! I use both so I could really care less who wins this battle.

                I guess the truth hurts.

Their computers are ridiculously overpriced. I'd actually probably try their OS if it weren't for that; they do have some great things to offer. But I can build myself a top line PC from scratch for a fraction of the cost of a bottom of the line Mac.

IDK Man after using a Mac for the last 6 months, I will never use a windows computer again unless I have to at work or something. With that being said these computers are better that windows based comps in my opinion and they should be more expensive.

Agreed, I'm a Tech for over 10 years now and only used PC, I have the new macbook pro and The ease of use and user friendly just blows any of M$ OS system, even XP and I loved XP.

PC guys take shots at Mac, but before you do just use a mac and use it for a week, it just works so much better them anything you would have used in the past.

I had a MacBook Pro at my last job and loved it...that being said I can't justify the 2-3k that I'd have to pay to get one myself...I got a pretty pimped out Dell laptop for a lot less. No denying that they're quality, just not worth it for me...Plus I do like having Windows since it's heavily dominating the software world, and it'd be a pain to pay extra on top of the expensive Mac for Windows to dual boot.

                          I don't know.

When I was looking for a new computer this summer, I originally wanted to try a Mac. I knew they'd be expensive, but I figured it was $100-200 more than a comparable PC. The Mac equivalent of the laptop I bought was about $600 more for a few inches less on the screen and about $1200 more for a comparable screen size.

Quality isn't worth that much to me.

The great thing about Mac's is they bundle top notch hardware with top notch software. I would buy a pc that ran OS before I bought a mac that ran windows.

                              I feel similarly.

Two things drive down prices on consumer goods: Government Regulation and Competition.

Government is certainly not going to get involved, but the competition that is sparking up is TERRIFIC for the consumer. Quality will go up and price will go down in order to beat the opponent... it's that simple.

That being said, I'm a Mac guy and can CERTAINLY justify the higher prices. No viruses, much simpler OS to use, many great features/add-ons, etc.

And Apple machines seem to be effective computers for much longer than PCs. It could just be that you don't have to worry about a virus or trojan destroying the machine or it could be the general build, but I've seen plenty of people go through a few PCs while my Mac remains standing... and running SO well.
